First off, a Happy Valentine's Day, both to my wife and to HyVee for being open at 3:30 AM today when desperate teething measures were needed. And a happy nap time to me this afternoon.

The Missourian: Phil Pressey's defense inspires Tigers' defensive thinkingOn the defensive play of Phil Pressey against Baylor’s Pierre Jackson on Saturday …
"He was outstanding. He was outstanding. We challenge him. We challenged Phil to get back to guarding the ball the way he’s capable of because Phil can be just a terror on the ball, and he was great — and without gambling. I know Phil’s the steal leader or one of the steal leaders in the Big 12, but those steals will happen if you just stay solid and keep guys in front of you, and we wanted all of our guards to do that, a much better job of that so the ball doesn’t get on our big people. As I said in the press conference, when the game is stretched out and pushed away from the basket, it’s to our advantage. But when it’s closer to the rim, it’s too our disadvantage. So we did a nice job at the frontline of our defense, and Phil spearheaded that with how he was able to contain and guard Pierre Jackson."
On where Pressey ranks as an on-ball defender …
"He’s as good as I’ve been around. Phil has great hands, too. He’s got big hands for a little guy. If you’ve ever watched Phil, he palms the ball. That’s a quality that he has that’s very unique for a guy his size, but he’s as good as I’ve been around — a guy that can control the game from a defensive standpoint, and we need that because we don’t have that backline shot-blocker and whatnot. And creating turnovers, we’re not playing helter-skelter type defense, but he can still have the same kind of effect playing solid. It’s a nice quality to have on your team."

I grew up, as I’m sure many others have, reading Calvin and Hobbes. Bill Watterson’s work was genius, simply put.

Not that that matters, you don’t need his acceptance (or the sense of accomplishment from actual work) to feel good.

you're scaring me with all this teething stuff, Bill
because baby bgtd is coming shortly after Rally Baby’s first birthday!
I shall dub him/her Dorial.
What a great Valentine’s Day!
hear us roar
The books are hilarious re: teething.
Basically they say that teething might make your kid miserable for weeks, or they might come in overnight with no fanfare. Quite the, uh, range. For Rally Baby, it has not been the most pleasant experience. But we got sucked in — after an awful Sunday night, she had a good enough day yesterday that we didn’t feel the need for me to fight the bad roads to get her stuff. Mistake. Biiiiiiiiig mistake.

We've had good luck with Gentle Care gripe water for teething.
I used to be the last person on the face of the earth who would be inclined to try something like gripe water…then I had a baby and that baby grew teeth. I have no idea why it works for us, but it does. I am sure it isn’t that effective for everyone, but may be worth a shot. We use it for gas and general fussiness, too.
Also, we’ve had better luck with infant Advil than Tylenol, FWIW.
Depends on the baby
Our second (9 months) just popped her first four through in about a week’s time and she wasn’t even fussy. Our first didn’t really have any problems until molars at around 20 months.
Sorry Bill. Don’t hate me.

The tone seems to be that chances are money moved but it’s doubtful anything can be proven so look the other way and enjoy the spoils…or is it just me?
I read it more as...
…Shapiro doesn’t have much credibility, but even if money did move, it will be very hard to prove. Which has been my stance for a while. I hope he didn’t do it, but even if he did, it might not be provable.

I don't see them separating out the basketball and football investigations
Clearing Jones was a priority for him because his eleigibility was running.
Neither Haith nor the institution have the same kind of acute timing concern, so I think there will be one final report/action.
so now you are saying that the NCAA has priorities the help the studen athlete?
I’m so confused.
That's right Ice Man. I am dangerous
Pie Forever!
Fair enough
1. The NCAA is a hopeless organization that rarely runs its investigations in a timely or sensible matter.
2. It OCCASIONALLY will move quickly to issue a determination for a student athlete (see, e.g., Cam Newton, the Rush bros.)
3. It will RARELY move thta quickly to assist an institution or coach.
4. It will still OFTTEN delay or screw over players and coaches for no apparent reason.
5.
5. In sum, the NCAA seems consistently inconsistent.
Which is a hell of a way to establish your credibility as a neutral arbiter.
He was never cleared.
Basically he hired a lawyer and threatened to sue the NCAA that they either need to provide evidence or let him play. So they let him play. They are still investigating and there still could be consequences down the line for the school because they are playing him.
Annoying You Since 1986
I would think that Miami and the NCAA know enough,
That they would never have let him be reinstated( with or without legal pressure) if there was anything proving this payment.
That's right Ice Man. I am dangerous
Pie Forever!
Anything proving this payment YET
I don’t think its provable or anything will come of it, just stating that in no way has Jones been cleared by the NCAA.
Annoying You Since 1986
The hiring of the lawyer imo was basically him making the statement
“You have nothing on me nor will you find anything. So you might as well let me play.”
That's right Ice Man. I am dangerous
Pie Forever!
I think it was more of a
“You don’t have time to find anything and the worst that can happen is that you will find something and stop me from playing anyway so i might as well play because it’s not like I’ll be punished after I’m gone”
Annoying You Since 1986
What...
…you’re forgetting is that near the end of the article it’s said he was reinstated due to legal pressure more than the investigation. Letting the kid play then making them forfeit any wins if he is determined ineligible is much easier than dealing with anything in court IMHO.
by achillbreeze on Feb 14, 2012 10:39 AM CST up reply actions
yes, but
it seems to indicate Miami doesn’t have strong evidence that he is ineligible. Whether the NCAA has evidence but isn’t sharing with Miami is another matter. And it’s possible evidence is still yet to be unearthed.

Still one of my favorite things to read, ever
When I was younger, I would save up all my money to go buy the next book, and I usually read it completely through by the time I went to bed the same day I got it . The more memorable thing to ever happen to me in elementary school was when I went back to sit and read a Calvin and Hobbes book in Borders while my mom looked around and there was a girl my own age (7-8) who was reading one too. She asked if I wanted to read it with her, and we did. When I laughed at Susie getting soaked by Calvin, she got mad and left.

I will also take what is undoubtedly a minority position: Twitter has had very little direct impact on my fandom. I think the linked article is largely crap. I’m not interested much in spur of the moment short form blathering. A well thought out piece (like, um, most of the articles here) is of far more interest to me. Bill undoubtedly gathers info from Twitter, but he probably gets more from the feeds in his Google Reader. It’s the filtering and analysis that he provides that adds value.
I am further frightened that this man intends to be a lawyer.
I spend a lot of time on Google Reader and a fair amount of time on Twitter
Reader is a great aggregator for in depth articles from around the web waiting to be read at your leisure; while Twitter is good for trending subjects. I’ve been using Reader for longer than I have Twitter and prefer it, but set up in the right way, Twitter can provide for an interesting stream of information from reliable outlets.

Big East announces it has voted to terminate West Virginia’s membership in the league, effective June 30, 2012.
by SEC Supremacist on Feb 14, 2012 9:14 AM CST reply actions
well, it's about time
So, with the new Mountain USA Conference of America being created, maybe all of the schools involved will just join their new conference next year instead of waiting.
Does anyone think the SEC and ACC will create a scheduling arrangement like the PAC 12 and B1G once both schools get to 14 members? If so, does that force the Big 12 and Big East to do something similar or be forced to only schedule teams from MUCA non-conference?
Doubt it.
The SEC is looking at going to 9 conference games: 6 in your division, 1 permanent rival, 2 rotating xdivisional games.

Left field thought
aside from the powers that be (money, and that’s a large aside), are these larger conferences going to draw America towards a football playoff?
ACC-14
SEC-14
Big East-12
Big Ten-12
Big 12-10
Pac-12-12
MountUSAWhatever-14
7 conferences, 88 teams. Almost 75% of D-1A represented by these seven schools.
Conference champions plus ONE at large for an 8 team playoff is like a dream to me. It would combine the best of college football with a March Madness feel to conference championship games and the playoffs. Too bad it will never happen.
Re: S&P
I can see Mathlete’s point in theory, but S&P rankings have always seemed fairly accurate, which indicates to me that you can reasonably extrapolate a team’s overall production. Really looking forward to seeing a meatier analysis from Mathlete and a response from Bill.
I think he is missing a crucial component of S&P
S = Success Rate
P = Points per play
I know S&P isn’t perfect, but it at least attempts to balance success rate with explosiveness. Mathlete’s article doesn’t seem to acknowledge that.
yeah it seemed to only focus on success rate as a singular metric
I’ve never seen it used without complementary statistics

Berlin and Cologne/Koeln are close by if she has a weekend off. Taking the rail system is the easiest way to travel to those two places. My best advice is to find some local beer gardens and ask around. If Hamburg is like most other German cities, their old town will be amazing.
Cheering on MIZZOU from all around the world.
that is an amazing statement considering all of the divorce-worthy things you have done just in the past 12 months.

I elect not to comment on the matter.
I intend primarily to draw attention to the fact that little fledgling Rock M Nation has outlasted a generation of college students, which makes this fair weblog about 76 in blog years.

22. Nebraska : The Huskers fit in nicely in their first Big Ten season. They ran the ball and played defense. What else is new? For Nebraska to win at least nine games for the fifth straight season, Bo Pelini must get something more out of Taylor Martinez. Nebraska’s quarterback has regressed since being a Heisman candidate the first half of 2010.

Even though KSU blew a golden opportunity to beat kU
I can’t be mad at them, they played really hard (excellent interior defense last night) but don’t have much of an offense or shooters to score with kansas. That freshman PG also made some really bad decisions, Flip would eat him up.
Unlike Baylor, who rolled over an played dead. They were pathetic.

Double funny since the Sooner Network already has a deal with Fox Sports SW
You know, Fox Sports was willing to set up a Big XII Network. We all could have gotten our payday. Texas still would have been king of the boardroom. But Deloss wanted his vanity network and he got it and all of the consequences that came with it.

I fail to see your logic.
At what point in your reasoning do you blame Mizzou?
When does Mizzou literally or figuratively remove an article of clothing while batting its collective eyes. Your argument is invalid.

Hey, did y'all know Texas is a benevolent master, and we're getting SEC'd in the hiney next year?

WV got treated very nicely for a newbie. No SEC treatment here

Never forget Wolf Island, or pie! #AHAMF, it's vaguely sordid.
I think our SEC schedule is about all we could ask for (or want)
There was a good chance we were going to get LSU or Bama (or maybe Arky), and we got them at home, so BOOM national headline guaranteed sell out game in CoMo in our first year.
We get the top East team at home (UGA).
The second-best of the ‘already in the SEC’ teams on the road (USC).
A down(ish) FL team on the road (same could be said for the TN game).
And the the bottom half of the East in a combo of home/road.
I don’t think we could have asked for anything much different than that.
agreed.
I guess their argument is they think it’s unfair for us to have to play in the East. I like it. Missing Arky is the only downside I see. And we’ll get them in hoops and in the SEC Champ game, amiright?

I personally
can’t WAIT to play them in basketball (please note that I am among the few that has pretty high hopes for next year’s team).
I love our SEC treatment
A&M probably doesn’t. But hey, the SEC wanted to send premiere SEC programs to our houses to start us off right. TCU has to play Kansas. I think we win.
