According to the good folks at PowerMizzou, Mizzou picked up Commit No. 3 of the 2013 class, another local kid who they offered on Junior Day: K.C. Hogan Prep athlete Anthony Sherrils. (Yes, that's where Marcus Denmon went to school; yes, Denmon and Sherrils are cousins.) Supposedly he has been given the option of playing either receiver or safety and hasn't decided which yet.

Initial scouting report (based on nothing more than some highlights above): he is a long-strider, someone who looks like he's just gliding in place, only nobody catches him. I thought the same thing watching Jeremy Maclin's high school film, and I thought the same thing watching the film of a bunch of players who weren't fast enough to get away from anybody at the collegiate level. Like I said about Russell Hansbrough in the Walkthrough series, it all depends on if he actually has that extra step versus real competition or not, and we can't tell from film. My initial guess is that he ends up at safety, but ... it's obviously a hair early to guess with any accuracy. There aren't a ton of defensive highlights above, and he hasn't been taught proper form yet (though one has to appreciate how hard he hits, especially when he is taught proper form), but that's my guess. Huzzah, three commits!

  • Mizzou-Georgia

All I can say is, I hope the coaching staffs of Mizzou's early-2012 opponents focus as much time as possible on DGB. T.J. Moe, Marcus Lucas, etc., could benefit tremendously from it. But yes, the above article talks about how Georgia might defend DGB Mizzou's passing game in the absence of suspended cornerback Sanders Commings. Mizzou's receiver depth could be really special this year, and obviously I won't be shedding any tears about Georgia's secondary not being full-strength.

But one of the little extras about the move is all of the added EDSBS coverage/hilarity

by mizzouglen on Feb 17, 2012 6:22 AM CST reply actions

I too am loving the extra Mizzou content at EDSBS.

What I’m truly (hopefully) looking forward to is seeing some of the commentariat eat crow. Every time I see a comments about how Mizzou is going to finish in the basement of the SEC, you know because if you aren’t a historic SEC team then you’re crap, I wonder how these people are going to react if/when their team gets beat by Mizzou. Will they admit that they know nothing about football outside the SEC (low probability) or start calling for the heads of their coaches for allowing a mediocre, former Big XII team, to beat them or simply claim that it was set up by Slive to make the addition of Mizzou look better by having them beat their own, obviously superior, team?

I’m not saying anything like Mizzou is going to be in the SEC Championship or anything like that but these folks need some perspective of their own. Heck, I find it funny that I’ve seen Gator fans that aren’t optimistic about beating us while other SEC fans seem to take it on faith that Florida is simply gonna cream us.

Gonna be a fun season.

by GreenRipper on Feb 17, 2012 7:57 AM CST up reply actions

That's exactly what I am saying.

I’ve seen what I consider knowledgeable Gator fans talking about how they feel that the game against Mizzou is likely to be a tough one and that they are very happy they get us at home. These fans seem to actually pay attention to teams outside the SEC and see Mizzou as a program that while not one of the elite is certainly one to be wary of and that brings additional quality to the SEC.

What I find funny are the number of SEC fans, who seem to think that because they are in “the best football conference in the nation” (Umpteen National Championships in a row, PAAAAWWWL) that it means that any team from outside the SEC is pretty much crap in comparison. Their mindset isn’t that the SEC is very deep and that their elite have been great but that any team from outside the SEC is a joke. I’m just wondering how these folks are gonna explain losses to a team they predicted would only have two conference wins at the end of the season.

by GreenRipper on Feb 17, 2012 10:08 AM CST up reply actions

To be fair

They’ve beaten every power conference in the championship, including themselves.

it's also kind of shocking how many people

(espn analysts, random commenters, etc) seem to assume that A&M is much better than Mizzou and better suited for the SEC. I really am tempted to whip out the list Bill had of B12 wins over the past 5 years and point out how much better Mizzou’s been than them.

by jschooltiger on Feb 17, 2012 9:59 AM CST up reply actions

Yes. This.

Its been inexplicable to me. They do realize that we have went into College Station TWO years in a row and beat them, right? Right?! And that we’ve consistently won more games and generally finished higher in both the b12 standings and national rankings for the past half decade, right? No??

But yeah, A&M is clearly more suited for the big leagues.

Stupid facts, always getting in the way of perceptions.

by DC_Tiger on Feb 17, 2012 10:46 AM CST up reply actions

.

I’ve been pleased overall with most of the commentary from the SEC schools and fanbases. It usually ranges from positive-neutral to outright complimentary. Sure, every fanbase has their proportion that is going to hate, but from the SEC guys it’s usually dismissive at worst. Most of the vitriol comes from outside the SEC. I can understand it from the Big XII, but what flummoxes me is the outright hate that comes from fanbases that have little to no history with Mizzou. Michigan State? Really?

Just wait and see if we do start winning.

If we come out of the gates and win a couple games early that others think we don’t have a chance in, like USCe and Georgia, I bet the Big 12 teams minus Kansas are going to use it to smack talk the SEC in favor of the strength of the Big 12.

What Am I?

Long time reader, first time participator. I know the cake vs. pie thing is played out, but it is causing me internal strife and identity issues. I enjoy both but would choose team pie if forced. However, my favorite individual dessert would be Boston Crème Pie. Although it is called a pie, it consists of two pieces of cake fused together by yummy custard. Some research on the interwebs indicates that it should be considered a cake despite the pie name. I’m lost and confused. How am I supposed to reconcile this?

They're so wrong, though

and not only because they are Beakers.

I’ve never seen a Mizzou team, and rarely have I seen any college basketball team, understand defensive positioning like this one does. Defense isn’t primarily played with hands and arms; it’s about feet. How else can the amazing change in charges drawn be explained? Kimmie has said as much in interviews; it’s about knowing your opponent, beating them to their spot, and getting position.

The stats back up what we see on the court. This team isn’t stellar in all facets of defense because of physical limitations, but these guys have been taught exactly how to make up for it. And that explains these foul numbers more than anything else. I might add the fact that Mizzou is even on foul calls on the road is stellar.

Dumb question

And I think I get the gist of this, but what does he mean by ‘Those units accrue to the conference’

Not familiar with the term ‘units’ in this context.

by DC_Tiger on Feb 17, 2012 9:29 AM CST up reply actions

Basically, the way the NCAA divies up cash to the conferences is based on your units in the tournament.

I’m not positive, but I think there are 67 games and depending on how many of these games you played in, and which games , you get a certain percentage of the money.

Annoying You Since 1986

by MUTIGERS86 on Feb 17, 2012 9:30 AM CST up reply actions

K, thanks. Thats what I thought it probably meant.

But when he says “any units we’ve earned in the 2012 NCAA Tournament or the five previous ones, all of those will stay with the Big 12 Conference. Those won’t follow us to the SEC.” I’m not quite following because then he says "the Big 12 will continue to earn a revenue distribution based upon our performance in the NCAA Tournament four or five years after we’ve gone."

Hasn’t the money from ‘the five previous ones’ already been passed out to the conferences? And then he goes on to say the part about “four or five years after we’ve gone,” so he seems to be talking about a 9-10 year period.

Am I just reading this all completely wrong? I shouldn’t be allowed to look at numbers before noon, because it never turns out well.

NCAA tournament fan here

NCAA tournament money is distributed in several ways, but the part that’s distributed based on performance is calculated by the number of games played by teams in that conference over the previous six years. So of the 387 games (64×5 +67) matching 774 teams played over the last 6 seasons, a conference gets money based on how many of those 774 teams were theirs.

They use units instead of a specific dollar amount because they don’t know until each year happens how much money each unit corresponds to.

by KSinDC on Feb 17, 2012 9:38 AM CST up reply actions

Thanks! This makes a lot more sense now.

But I’d prefer if you continue to use your standard “Kansas fan here” in the subject line.

So, for example, the 6 units earned by VCU last year

will be counted in the unit total for the CAA for this season and the next five.

I think each unit was worth around $250K last year.

We had a discussion about this on RCT a few weeks ago

Most of the commenters have had to find some way to distance themselves from the games as a result of some awful loss (the worst loss ever was Arizona in 97, but the game that permanently changed the way I watched was Bucknell), but all of us felt that made the championship run a little less exciting than it should have been.

I can barely remember the second half of the Memphis game in 08 as a result.

One of the many good reasons to go watch the games in person is that they don’t sell alcohol at tournament games so you really experience the highs and lows.

I was lucky enough

to attend the Super Bowl this year. Saw an empty seat right in front of us and overheard the guy explaining that he and his buddy got wasted before the game and somehow got separated and couldn’t contact one another. Since the guy in front of us had the tix he got in the game and the other guy was SOL. You could literally see him sobering up yet feeling crappier right in front of us. He finally got in touch with his buddy with about 5 minutes left in the game, got up and left, and never returned. Hell of a Super Bowl experience for them.

Kamara is set to check out Florida this weekend.
“There were 105 letters from Alabama,” Kamara told Rivals.com.

Seriously?

“I counted!” Kamara said. “And I took pictures. I was shocked. I didn’t expect there to be that many in the mailbox. When I opened it, it was overflowing and some of them fell out.”

Kamara said he’s keeping all 105 of them in one shoebox.

Tucson still gets really hot

but typically about 5 degrees cooler than Phoenix due to the elevation, and it also doesn’t have the insulating effects of approximately 1 billion square miles of human development

Ok I seriously hate RCT

just saw the little twitter spat.

Fist off, we are in the exact same conference, so strength of schedule is going to EXACTLY the same for the majority of the games.

Second off, you lost to Davidson….

Third, you lost to every good team you played out of conference except tOUS, and they were down their best player.

So why exactly should you be rewarded for trying and failing when it comes to strength of schedule? All it has proved is that you are worse than every good team you have played unless they are missing their star player. And don’t give me the Baylor is highly ranked, we both swept them.

So f-off RCT, your oversensitivity and douchebaggery know no bounds

further, look at who you're dealing with

WB, Fox, Paramount (or Viacomm) were at one time not only the owners of the movie rights, but of the actors themselves. Hell, to become an actor, you had to be a wage-slave on set half the time (see John Wayne). Now adays they can’t own the actors (thanks to the union) and furthermore, have to pay 30 million just to get them to play the part. Of course, you need to drop 150 million on CGI, because it’s easier than hiring a union stuntman to do something for you. Then you not only want but EXPECT consumers to buy DVD…not just Blue-Ray, but DVD’s too, a format that should have gone the way of betamax, but you refuse to. What’s more, you insist that it’s all worth $25 for the Blue-Ray, the DVD, AND A DIGITAL DOWNLOAD THAT’S KEPT IN THE CLOUD. AND OH, NETFLIX, YOU’RE DOING SOMETHING SMART AND RUNNING AN ONLINE RENTAL STORE?!? NOPE, CAN’T HAVE THAT CAUSE YOU DON’T NEED TO BUY AS MANY DISKS THAT WAY! AND THIS STREAMING CONTENT? VIEWING WHEN THEY WANT TO?!? OH, HELL NO! WHY SHOULD THE CONSUMER ACTUALLY GET TO WATCH SOMETHING ON THEIR OWN TIME? GET IN THE MOVIE THEATHER, AND BUY THAT OVERPRICED TUB OF SATURATED FAT!! THERE’S A CONSPIRACY TO MAINTAIN HERE!

Having worked at AMC theatres corporate for a bit

I can tell you this is not the theaters fault. On bigger movies like the Harry Potter’s and alot of the 3D movies, they actually lose money on the ticket sales. The distributor sets the price for those and the theater can choose to charge the customer more of less depending on the market. The popcorn has to be 140 bucks per tub for the theater to make any money at all.

Spot on

I’ve been arguing this for years – music, books, movies, etc. The most disingenuous argument is about the cost of piracy. Their assumption is that every pirated copy would have been bought at full retail. Umm, no. If people were willing to pay that for it, they would have paid that. They assume price inelasticity of demand, when in actuality the demand curve is extremely elastic in terms of dollars, pain, etc.

The proof of all of this is iTunes. Make it easy and malware free for people to get just the music they want and no other cruft, and they will do so.
