Missouri 71, Texas A&M 62: Kim English Spectacular In Mizzou's 25th Win
Kim English scored 21 points on just ten field goal attempts and grabbed six rebounds and four steals as Missouri kept pace in the Big 12 title race with a 71-62 win, their first at Reed Arena since 2001. An offensive surge by Mike Dixon (15 points on 5-for-8 shooting) gave Mizzou a second-half cushion; then, with the lead cut to nine, Mizzou applied the dagger with a sequence that saw Steve Moore draw yet another charge and Marcus Denmon hit a killer 3-pointer with 36 seconds left.
Texas A&M was led by solid games from Khris Middleton (15 points on 5-for-11 shooting) and Jordan Green (14 points on 6-for-8 shooting), but Elston Turner struggled, and the Aggies made just five of 17 3-pointers. Mizzou neutralized the Aggies on the glass, too, with three different Tigers each grabbing six rebounds.
For at least a few hours, Mizzou has once again taken sole possession of first place in the conference at 12-2, 25-2 overall. Assuming Kansas beats Texas Tech at home tonight, the two squads will be tied with two weeks remaining in conference play. This is fun.

Fouls are not equal for every team.
Some teams foul more than others. Last year, Mizzou fouled a whole lot. A ton of people (including myself) would always blame Big 12 refs for large differences in fouls and free throws, but it really is just that good teams attack and get fouled, bad teams don’t. I think we’re all starting to figure that out this season.
Or haven't watched their own team for the past decade.
"Success is not owned. It's rented, and you have to pay rent every day."

Just what comes with being basketball fans, I guess
I yell at 80% of fouls against Mizzou when I’m at the game. It’s just kind of weird to be getting fewer calls on the road.

by ratherfantastic on Feb 18, 2012 3:47 PM CST up reply actions
We don't foul much this season because we can't afford to,
With our lack of depth, we can’t afford any foul trouble – especially inside.
Our low foul rate and the rather high effective shooting percentage we allow have me convinced Coach Haith has us playing softer than we could be playing on defense so that we don’t get into the one kind of trouble we cannot play out way out of.
Bravo, Frank.
To SEC, or not to SEC, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous Texas,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,

I agree. I think one example of that is that the ball screens that our bigs
set are not as aggressive as other teams. I used to be annoyed by it, but then thought better of it.
Irish provenance of the schwa pronunciation of vowels in weakly stressed syllables -> Missoura
I think that's exactly it.
How many times on an opponent’s fast break do we see our players pull up and let them have the easy basket. We can make up the two points alot easier than the fouls. I think its by design and it shows by a little bit less in the defensive results and better shooting percentages for our opponents.
The people criticizing it just don’t understand the true reality of the situation. We can’t afford to be like K-State where an eye gouge or shoulder slap is as much as an objective as actually getting some ball with your flailing.
"Myself and my teammates are a bunch of winners," ~ Marcus Denmon
I called if a few weeks ago like this...and everyone got mad that I upset their god.
This is setting up like we’re gonna get some huge bad call in our favor, in each game, all the way through march madness, win the championship, and we will finally be repaid for the 5th down and kicked ball calls. All because we are leaving the big confusion.

is that now he has a great example of what to shoot for and what to expect from the newbies he’ll be bringing into the program. He and these players have put together a nice template based on team work, leadership and unselfishness to mold future teams into.

I came up with this. Just an idea
The reasoning: 1) Guitar is awesome 2) when he references the south west technically Joplin is south west of Columbia 3) IMO the song is about helping people out which to me smacks of we are a Mizzou family

My only pet peeve for the season so far:
Does anyone else feel like our “eat some clock” offense is terrible? From what I see, its the only area that we have consistently executed poorly. We start the offense too close to the half court line, and rarely, if ever, take a good shot. Maybe that is something they could focus on in practice…for the love of God!
That and they sometimes get sloppy when they start doing the Globetrotter moves
"You have to remember, basketball to the University of Miami is like football to the University of Kansas." - Kim English
It looked like we entered our spread/slow the game down offense at about the 4 minute mark
and I thought it looked the best of the season for the first few possessions, and obviously on Denmon’s 3 to seal the game. A couple of times I thought they waited a couple of seconds too long and I wish they would start at the 12 second mark and not under 10 seconds. I’m perfectly fine with the strategy, just need to tweak it just a bit and I think it will suit us well down the stretch.
We've used this offense in every game since kansas and we're undeated with it right?
The osu game is the only one it’s sort of backfired in and we had other problems besides the spread offense in stillwater. We don’t score on every possession using it but we don’t score on every possession using our regular offense either.

by Zou want a piece? on Feb 18, 2012 6:20 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
This is why it's my "only pet peeve"
of this season. There is obviously not much to be upset about with the way this season has gone. And I don’t think I ever mentioned it as a “complaint.” BUT, we have allowed teams back into several games using our “eat some clock” offense. We have been lucky enough (or talented enough, or whatever your particular thought is) to pull off these close games. And if there is only one place for me personally to be concerned about, whether it be in the conference tourney or beyond, it will be that portion of the offense.
I am all for doing what we have been doing to be in the lead in these games in the first place.
Its like teams switching to the prevent defense in football and letting other skilled teams quickly dink and dunk the ball down the field in short order. I’d rather us keep doing what we were doing and score points than run the clock and not score points. It just sucks to see a shot clock wasted and then having a player throw up a long jump shot with a body on him and hand in his face. Waiting until 8 seconds are left on the shot clock until a play is run seems to have this result in some of these games more times than not.

We didn't lowball him.
He stated that if it came to staying in stl or going somewhere else for 3-4 more million a year, he’d stay. guess what the difference was between our offer and the angles. 3 million a year. So he lied. Then his wife complained on how hard the decision was. seriously, the guy just wanted to get paid, and we wanted him to become a legend. He chose 3 million a year over a statue.

is that the 5 year offer was our initial offer, not the final one. Either way the fact that they were “insulted” by a multi-year multi-million dollar offer from any team tells me all I need to know about the Pujols’.

Personally
I see it as, fans expect them to be loyal to the team but don’t expect the team to be loyal to them.
I swear, I’m not trying to force an argument here, this is just a nice change from most Cardinals fans I’ve talked to about this, who are more in the mode of RABBLE RABBLE PUJOLS IS GOING TO HELL AND HE SUCKS ANYWAY.
Check out the up-and-coming Mizzou blog: http://www.zoulogy.com
I'm a huge Cardinals fan
and IMHO, I’m glad we didn’t re-sign him for the price he wanted. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Pujols. But he can barely run the bases without looking like a 60 year old. He’s got bad feet, and had elbow injury issues that have kept him out of games the last several seasons. I would have loved to have him back for a 5 year deal, but the front office would have done us a major disservice by signing him to a 10 year deal.
He will have a longer career in the American League, because he can DH. I won’t ever say he sucks, but I do feel that St. Louis got his best years. But I’ve been wrong before.
I still wish him well, because my wife went to high school with him.
See, this is why I come here to talk sports
People are actually respectful and intelligent here. It’s completely understandable to think we (Angels) paid too much, but to say that he sucks like many STL fans I know did is just ridiculous.
Check out the up-and-coming Mizzou blog: http://www.zoulogy.com
He definitely doesn't suck
But he took a noticeable and statistical step back last year in virtually every way, and I would be terrified had he re-signed for 10 years. His plate discipline went to hell (by Pujols standards) and he rolled over on more offspeed pitches last year than ever before. I think his days as the best player in baseball are already over.
I mean that still leaves him as a 5-6 Win player and top 10-15 in the league and clearly worth 25 mil right now….but a 10 year deal is crazy IMO. He’s unlikely to be worth it, and I think he’s far more likely to turn into a damn anchor than he is to live up to the contract.

Moreno has certainly showed a willingness to eat bad contracts—-in fact I don’t know if Vernon Wells’ contract even qualifies as bad, it’s just “Vernon Wells’ contract” and it speaks for itself—-so I doubt he’s gonna go cheap any time soon regardless.
Not afraid to nitpick
Oh God
Let’s not even talk about Vernon Wells…I want to cry myself to sleep every time I think about the fact that we traded Mike Napoli for him and barely got any of his contract taken care of.
Check out the up-and-coming Mizzou blog: http://www.zoulogy.com
Well right but they have the $3 billion no matter what
Spending 25M AAV on 4 years of a 38, 39, 40 and 41 year old just can’t be the best use of that money. I get why they did it as his signing has a bigger impact than just his on the field production, but I just can’t imagine it being worth at least 4ish years of WILD overpaying.
BTW he was better after the wrist injury than before it. .279/.355/.500 before, .318/.375/.579 after. I mean if we’re really cherry picking and go with August 4th on, he was at .345/.411/.594, though still not walking at anywhere near his normal rate. I expect him to rebound a bit from last year, but still like I said that doesn’t put him back to his prime.
(And $3 billion is somewhat misleading in that it’s over 20 years. Quick back of the napkin Excel has it at 90M in 2012 growing at 5% per year=3 billion over 20 years. Not quite the same as the $150M average people quote.)
Not afraid to nitpick
I must not get around much
because none of the Cardinal fans I know have bad mouthed Pujols for leaving. Some have expressed dismay with the Pujols camp maintaining after the fact that it wasn’t about the money, yadda, yadda, yadda. But I haven’t found anybody who thinks he’s a schmuck for going to LA. The LA contract made sense for him. What STL would have had to pay probably didn’t make sense for them.
Like MUStL I wish him well.

He can probably build a whole lot of statues with an extra
3 million dollars per year. He’ll either be a baseball legend or not when he retires. I mean, it’s obviously special to be a legend for a particular sports team, but who would turn down that much money per year to stay at their current job?
Of *course* he's going to say that when he was here
He was lying. Every athlete lies the same way. They have to lie, it’s called PR. What do you expect of him, “hey St. Louis is alright but I’m going where I’m gonna get PAID”—-I’m sure that would have gone over well. This is just reality, he was always going to take an extra 30 million, I’d take the extra 30 million and so would pretty much anyone else; it’s always about the money. It’s not a character problem, it’s a 30 million dollars problem.
Of course he’s still going to be lying when he signs the deal because he’s saying that for the Angels fans who want to think he really cares about the franchise—-again it’s PR. I think he completely botched how he handled it, but it’s about the money for pretty much everyone. That’s professional sports.
And good for him, he got his money. Good for the Cardinals as they won’t have the joy of paying a 38, 39, 40 and 41 year old top-of-the-league salary.
Not afraid to nitpick
Dixon'll fix him for Kimmeh.
Either way we upgraded BIG. All the coach speak he talks when a mic is in his face is gone as well as the 40 minutes gimmick. Replaced with a guy that is very genuine, talks straight you through the camera as if you were having a one on one conversation with him and he’s proving he can coach too.
I really do appreciate what Coach Anderson did for us while he was here
and I don’t fault him for playing us for more money once, but doing it twice in such short order was kind of bothersome. I felt bad when he left and I didn’t like the way it happened but after watching the Razorbacks running the sloppiest, stupidest 40 minutes earlier tonight, that novelty has long run its course for me. I say good riddance to it. Sometimes it worked but it seemed alot of times our players were the only ones out there getting tired.

I still don't understand why XCMA gets blamed for Georgia and Oregon
offers. He made successful runs in the NCAA during those years. There was demand for his service, and people made offers. I have no problems with him looking at offers people were making. I totally agree on the botched Arkansas situation and how he scooted out of town. Maybe I don’t have the inside info that others had, and knew that he purposely played other schools so that he would get paid. Would we say the same thing about Matt Painter?

That's going to happen and since Haith really doesn't have a strong tie to any school he's coached at
I don’t see Alden having any trouble retaining him. As opposed to Anderson who will spend years trying to catch lightning in a bottle at Arkansas.
#Eldon College
Because it's pretty clear at this point that it was a shakedown.
The Georgia offer, ok, I can live with that. He earned and received his raise and Mizzou was happy to lock him up. By the time the Oregon offer came along, it was pretty obvious that Pelfrey was on the hotseat at Arkansas and the fanabse was starting to wonder if Anderson was gunning for it. To make a play for money so soon after the Georgia deal set the idea in people’s minds that he and Sexton were positioning themselves for a big payday from Arkansas. And that’s what they got. Based on this year’s play, CMA doesn’t look like a $2 million coach, but that’s what he got because of their shakedown of Mizzou.

i'm starting to wonder exactly how much contact an offensive player has to make
before people stop whining that the defensive player is flopping.
The Michigan - OSU game had a good example
It depends if the offensive guy goes through the spot occupied by the defender.
I'm a nomad that cheers on MIZZOU from all around the world.
Absolutely.
It was my understanding that the defensive player has just as much right to that position as the offensive player. Did Steve flop (meaning was the contact enough to knock over somebody of Moore’s size) … yeah he probably flopped. But all that’s doing is bringing the contact to light so the officials can make the proper call. The contact was initiated by an out-of-control offensive player trying to back Steve down in the paint. Steve did what every basketball player on the planet is trained to do in that situation. He planted his feet, stood his ground, took the contact and fell to the floor. That is a very good defensive play and THE VERY DEFINITION OF A CHARGE!
I don’t understand what all of the outrage is … other than the fact that this isn’t Duke or Kansas or UNC or Kentucky (the royalty of the sport) getting the benefit of these calls. The talking heads won’t admit it in public, but what else could it be? And if that is the case … each one of them needs to take a look in the mirror and reconsider their choice of profession.
With all of that said though … this is a good day. We got a road win over a tough conference opponent and they can’t ruin my mood. Way to go, Tigers, and M-I-Z!!!
"Success is not owned. It's rented, and you have to pay rent every day."

that was kinda my point, who cares if he fell down on purpose or not?
that doesn’t change whether he was in position and the offensive player initiated contact.
I guess Steve and Kimmeh are just going to have to bite fake blood pellets in their mouths to get the most effect with lesser media and opposing fan criticism.

Well that was the subject line
The full quote was
“The Heisman is not a measure of on-field production
Neither is being a first round pick in the NFL draft. Try again."
He was saying that there will be no drop-off after losing RG3.

Nick Florence is a helluva qb, as we can personally attest to
But there there should be expected drop off when a multi year starting, Heisman winning qb leaves.

So, apparently the real most interesting man in the world died.
At 9, he settled a dispute with a pistol. At 13, he lit out for the Amazon jungle.
At 20, he attempted suicide-by-jaguar. Afterward he was apprenticed to a pirate. To please his mother, who did not take kindly to his being a pirate, he briefly managed a mink farm, one of the few truly dull entries on his otherwise crackling résumé, which lately included a career as a professional gambler.
