Mizzou Links, 2-2-12

Missouri raised both its recruiting game and insanity yesterday. Well done.

Mizzou Football Links

Obviously DGB stole the show yesterday, but as time passes, he shifts to being just one member of an 18-man recruiting class; for Mizzou to be successful down the road, quite a few members of this class will need to thrive, and there are quite a few intriguing candidates. As the Walkthrough series gets moving again, we will go into detail about all of these signees, position by position. But for now ... of course...

(And FYI: the reason I was in Springfield yesterday was to write a lengthy DGB piece today for the SBN Mothership. Stay tuned.)

I don't think National Signing Day is something Missouri fans are going to be hanging on every year.

This was certainly an awesome spectacle and hopefully a sign of things to come, but let’s not forget that HCGP and his staff have gotten Mizzou where it is by taking unheralded recruits and coaching them up.

I can't believe that it's not a violation for a booster to call a recruit

It was a booster club slush fund

Although the AD was aware of it. From the wiki:

Eventually, the NCAA investigation revealed that from 1985 to 1986, 13 players had been paid a total of $61,000 from a slush fund provided by a booster. Payments ranged from $50 to $725 per month and had started only a month after SMU had been slapped with its latest probation. The Times Herald later identified the booster as Dallas real-estate developer Sherwood Blount, Jr., who played for the Mustangs from 1969 to 1971 (though according to Parker, other boosters were almost certainly involved). The players had received a total of $47,000 during the 1985-86 school year. Eight of those players were paid an additional $14,000 from September to December 1986. The slush fund was due to be discontinued when the 13 players had all left the school. These payments were made with the full knowledge and approval of athletic department staff. According to the Morning News, Hitch knew about the existence of a slush fund as early as 1981 and was involved in the decision to continue the payments even after SMU was placed on probation in 1985. The Morning News also said Collins knew certain players were being paid, but did not know who they were.9
Two months after being sworn in as governor, Clements admitted that he’d learned about the slush fund in 1984. An investigation by the board of governors revealed players had been paid to play since the mid-1970s.10 According to Clements, the board secretly agreed to phase out the fund at the end of the 1986 season, since the members felt duty-bound to honor previous commitments to players who had already been promised payments. A 1987 investigation by the College of Bishops of the United Methodist Church revealed that Clements had met with Hitch in 1985, and the two agreed that despite the probation, the payments had to continue because the football program had “a payroll to meet.”

In the wake of Cam Newton, I think it is if it's clear you're doing so for a recruit

which is the ambiguity I was getting at. Obviously that’s the reason the guy called, but if he’s an Arkansas booster that lives in Springfield or used to be from Springfield, there’s at least enough plausibility(for the NCAA at least) that it’s just a coincidence that the high school staff member he contacted happened to be the adoptive father of the #1 WR his school was recruiting.

The way I see it, the booster committed one of the following violations.

A. He’s a slime ball who attempted to influence a recruit’s decision by bringing up the fact that he’s giving out money that could go to something the recruit cares about.
B. He’s an idiot who just happened to be calling the house of a recruit who happens to be making a decision about a school the booster just happens to give money to, and, oh, by the way, is also just happening to be considering giving money to the recruit’s school too and just happened to bring that up in conversation, and just happened to not even have it cross his mind how that might look suspicious.
Even if it’s B, shouldn’t we as a society have a lot more rules, regulations, laws and such to keep idiots from hurting themselves or others?

Excellent peek at the recruitment process.

The very minor point I got a chuckle at was about underage drinking. Earlier this week we got the story that Harpo’s had the gall to card DGB and in doing so ruined our shot at recruiting him. You read this story and you find out that the underage drinking is a concern to his adoptive parents and the incident at Arky was certainly an issue for them.

Are even goofier and more subjective than Mel Kiper’s draft evaluations. Mauk holds the national highschool record for passing, and he’s a 3-star. I don't think that we have more depth at the position than most teams

The reality is we don’t have any idea how Josey will ever come back. We all have high expectations for Murphy, but that’s a lot of black and gold tint on that. K-Law hasn’t been a world beater. After that we have some 3 star guys.

This doesn’t mean that Josey won’t come out and kill. Murphy will be a stud. K-Law will continue to improve, etc. But right now, I’m not sure objectively one could say we have more depth at the position than any of the SEC schools. Certainly it isn’t so positive that an article should put a disclaimer at the top.

by CapnCribbs on Feb 2, 2012 10:29 AM CST up reply actions

it's not a question of whether we have been adequate or not

just that we haven’t had a marquee running back often. Part of that is because of our system of play and the fact that we throw the ball often and don’t use a power running game. As such, we don’t get the top of the recruiting line running backs. See Ronnie Wingo and Montee Ball for examples.

There are a lot of theories as to why, but it certainly complicates the care of the dementia patient, whether in a care facility, hospital, or at home with a caretaker.

Here’s a quick post from the Mayo Clinic — Sundowning

This is awesome.

Anyway they try and get DGB to recruit him a bit?

For real!

I do think the atmosphere will do a LOT for recruiting him, but the fact that DGB will be there getting tons of love will help out! This is such a huge week!

Just read up on him

Yeah, he wouldn’t hurt the cause. I’d say he’d fill Green’s spot mighty nicely.

I think the fact that we’re in the game for him is a sign that Denson will not be suiting up for Mizzou ever. He would be our 13th, but we’re still recruiting Pollard.

Just walked by the Mr. James Franklin

Oh wow. I felt like a twig compared to him. He was talking to a student and was saying “No sir/ yes sir”… I really like the guy. A lot.

Darn

Why didn’t we recruit that kid? We need more kids with milfs in our program.

So...

How much pressure does Rolandis Woodland get to surrender his jersey number?

Probably not much,

unless DGB is superstitious. I can’t imagine a high school number going to be that important to someone.

2396 was my high school number

it is very important to me.

From Terez Paylor of the KC Star:
Talked to DGB about his potential jersey number at #Mizzou. He wants No. 5, but said he would rock any single digit. Also likes Nos. 81, 82.

The thought of him in ’Nario’s old number is rather appealing though, no?

As long as he is a Tiger, I don't care if he wears a lineman number.

But seriously, maybe this is an opportunity to get rid of the duplicitous numbers? It’s not like we have a greater number of players than single and double-digit numbers could cover, right?

They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time, it works every time.
