Post-Dispatch: MU tries to avenge loss as big week begins - Don't Look Ahead
The Trib: First things first for MU, KU
The Trib (Steve Walentik): Haith on Matt Pressey's ankle, Kim English's value and not looking ahead to KUOn what Kansas State did in the first meeting (a 75-59 loss) that other teams haven’t …
“They took us out to the woodshed. They whipped us. Simple as that. They physically dominated the game, and they physically dominated us, on the glass, in all aspects of the game. It was a butt-whupping.
On if that result makes it easier not to peek ahead to Saturday’s game at Kansas …
“I don’t think this team has done that at all, all year. I think this team has been focused on the task at hand, and I’m real proud at how they’ve stayed focused. We understand this. There’s no doubt that K-State can come in here and whip up just like they whipped us in Manhattan if we’re not ready to play. We’ve got to be ready to play, and it’s going to take a yeomen’s effort for us to beat K-State, even in our own house. They’re that type of team that can really take us out and be very physical with us.”

Wow: The Communist Manifesto was published on February 21st, 1848
and “it laid out the League’s purposes and program. It presents an analytical approach to the class struggle (historical and present) and the problems of capitalism, rather than a prediction of communism’s potential future forms.”
It appears that naming it the “Alden Manifesto” is not as far off as I originally believed.
If you want to be all purist about it
nobody has ever really tried communism (in any organization with more than a few hundred people). What the USSR, China and Cuba pulled off is not even really close to what Marx had in mind.
But then if you have a similarly exact definition of capitalism (all free trade with no restrictions at whatsoever), the only places that are currently pulling it off are ones like Mogadishu, where there literally are NO rules at all.
/poli sci’d.
not to be outdone, the manifesto is soon to be followed by

If they beat kU the last game of the season they can have a 2 seed as far as I'm concerned.
However, I’d also appreciate it if they’d beat kU and still not make the tournament at all.
And they'll play a good 12-seed
most likely from the Big East. All sources point to doom.

Doom, only because
of the injustice of Texas only being a 5 and the Big East getting a 12 seed. It’ll be the best tourney game in history.

And some less than good ones.
I’m sorry, Seth D., but margin of victory is incredibly predictive and evaluative, whether we want it to be or not.
But wait: Isn’t beating a good team by 20 points more impressive than beating a bad team by one? Of course. That’s why the members of the committee are free to take that into account when they burrow into the details. In fact, the committee members are free to take any factor into account. And they do. But to replace the RPI with a formula that explicitly incorporates scoring margin? There are some pretty bad ideas about how to improve this process, but this one is by far the worst.
OR … we can start from a better starting point (a formula that includes MOV), and the committee members can be “free to take that into account” and punish run-it-up teams thusly.

you finally update this blog
and start with you far-fetched made up predictive stats.
Busting Bill C since September 19, 2011 10:19 CST, 8:19 PDT.
I didn't agree with the whole article
especially the part about predicting tourney success. That’s the whole purpose of Pomeroy and Sagarin ratings, right? (Side note: use these as a tool when picking your brackets. Not exclusively, but refer to them. Your wallet might end up thanking you.)
But I agree with him that using those systems for tournament selection/seeding purposes would be incredibly unfair to teams that have achieved wins on the court that the numbers say they shouldn’t have. Good luck, closing ability, whatever you want to call it…it doesn’t put an asterisk next to the victory in the win column, which it can in efficiency ratings. Conversely, someone should tell this guy (http://basketballpredictions.blogspot.com/2012/02/w-3-bp68.html) that a close loss to a good team doesn’t make it less of a loss compared to teams that actually win games. (Shameless taunting penalty on this guy…I should stop laughing at his bracket, but he is so stubborn that it is hilarious.)
I had forgotten that a team can only directly affect 25 percent of its RPI rating by winning. The rest seems to be dependent on conference affiliation and good (lucky) non-conference scheduling. There has to be a way to tweak the formula.

The job of the committee isn't to predict success in the tournament
The job of the committee is to reward deserving teams based on their accomplishments over the course of the season.
I use predictive rankings as a tool when filling out my bracket (and so should you), but that is not the committee’s job.
I agree wholeheartedly
I think writers like Davis just don’t understand basic statistics: including more information that explains additional variability is ALWAYS a good thing. Using a crude measure because that’s the only thing that makes sense to you is not.
If you’re so worried about people running up the score, then tell everybody that there’s a cap on scoring margin, say 25 points. And, if people are still worried that people will get their feelings hurt, well too bad. What’s worse: some basketball players playing at the highest collegiate level get beat badly in a game, or deserving teams are left out of the tournament because people were too afraid to use perfectly good data that would have provided the case for their rightful inclusion? It’s a no brainer.
My problem is with the KenPom luck factor
I don’t care whether a result was lucky or not. I care about the result.
To me, the basic problem is that the RPI doesn't make sense.
It arbitrarily weights its constituent factors (whether it overweights them or underweights them, who knows?). And then they’ve built an entire analytical edifice based on it which infiltrates the entire month of February and early March. It’s just annoying. I agree the committee gets the field right or mostly right, but it’s the seedings that are jacked.

I've e-mailed the site managers before on behalf of RMNers whose bans I thought were unjust
I’ll send them an e-mail with this thread. I think they’ll reinstate you.

While you're at it
can you ban Andrew Clark?

I've never even posted a commet over there but I did rec a few comments
from Beakers bashing their own team but it was far from rec bombing. I was banned though without ever posting a comment and no, Owen never asked me to refrain. I do not feel pity for the guy here whatsoever. I think he should go back to his own board and criticize MU because Tiger fans sure don’t sport that same luxury in return.
"Myself and my teammates are a bunch of winners," ~ Marcus Denmon
Hmm..
First- I was banned on RCT for no apparent reason. So I cannot really do anything/stop anything from happening.
Second- not capitalizing the k is a tradition for MU fans, and if you want to whine about it go ahead, but I doubt you will find any sympathy for it.
Third- I actually thought about doing something like this earlier during the football season, and was very wisely advised to me that whatever we do to RCT, they can very easily do right back. I actually do not think that it will happen, but if it does, it is not attacking your school/traditions/person/history/team. It’s simply making a joke about the (in my opinion) dumb and illogical rationalization that money is the real reason why you kU is ending the rivalry.
Fourth-I for one greatly respect the work that Bill provides for free here, and I would not want to cast this site in a bad light. If my perspective (that is is a harmless joke) is off, then so be it, and I hope an admin here says no. I just think that it is these little jokes that make being a colleg sports fan fun, and I do think that a stupid little internet joke is far better than any physical/destructive/harmful prank in real life.

so many typos
so little time
"I always heard there were three kinds of suns in Kansas, sunshine, sunflowers, and sons-of-bitches" -Josey Wales
not to heap on
but I really don’t see how refusing to capitalize the k in kU is offensive or rude. It is clearly being done in jest and has a very minimal effect on the reader. Compared to the profane, insulting and demeaning terms I see thrown around, kU seems remarkably tame.
You're right that these are all minor problems
It seems that refusing to capitalize Kansas is intended to cause offense and offense is taken, but only a minor amount is intended and only a minor amount is taken.
And as Rugby points out above, the worst result of rec-bombing is I have to read every comment or miss a couple comments I might have liked to read if I don’t have the time to read everything. Hardly the end of the world.
Still, it seemed inconsistent with what this site generally aspires to, and the annoyances, though minor, are real. So I questioned it.
it is, and i'm sure bill will give us all a good tongue lashing tomorrow.

I've got a few fat caps I've cut off of pork butts before roasting them
It seems a waste to waste all that delicious pork fat, but I don’t really know what to do with them. Any ideas aside from just rendering the fat and saving it for cooking greens?
The rendering is all I can really think of.
You could probly use it as a base for a good gravy or for a soup/stew also.

How would one go about listening to Mike Kelly call tonight's game via the internet?
If one wanted to avoid being Gottlieb’d?
I'm going to be stuck watching the game on espn3 with the volume off.

Gottlieb has been praising Mizzou....
Arena today. So maybe seeing a game in person will change his mind a little bit?
"I always heard there were three kinds of suns in Kansas, sunshine, sunflowers, and sons-of-bitches" -Josey Wales
His beef right now is with Mizzou fans
He claims it’s all about his picking them sixth instead of third, but I don’t know why anyone would care about that. I think “Matt Pressey is a disgrace to humanity”, “Look at me, I’m a producer”, “Phil Pressey is only 75% point guard” and “Steve Moore is a flopper” is probably why no one takes him seriously.
"You have to remember, basketball to the University of Miami is like football to the University of Kansas." - Kim English
What was the producer thing?
I just can’t believe he can throw those type of remarks about a fan base on his official espn twitter. Hopefully he get a private telling-to for that.
"I always heard there were three kinds of suns in Kansas, sunshine, sunflowers, and sons-of-bitches" -Josey Wales
During last year's game, he went to the truck and played producer
Screwed up all of the camera angles, talked over the broadcast. I think we all pretty much ignored him until that.
"You have to remember, basketball to the University of Miami is like football to the University of Kansas." - Kim English
Hm.
Was he supposed to do that or did he just have absolutely zero interest in the game?
"I always heard there were three kinds of suns in Kansas, sunshine, sunflowers, and sons-of-bitches" -Josey Wales
It was an ESPN experiment
"You have to remember, basketball to the University of Miami is like football to the University of Kansas." - Kim English
for me it wasn't really the camera angles
the angle was fine, albeit different, the thing that bothered me was that half of the screen was showing Doug looking at the monitors. I have no idea why I would want to watch a guy watching a tv while I was trying to watch a game.
If I had tickets where his camera was, I would have any problem with it, unless Gotlieb (or anybody really) insisted on covering up half of my view.

If quite a few fans hold up negative signs about Gottlieb
do you think ESPN will make sure those signs don’t see air time?
Personally, I hope our fans and the Antlers let him have it.
