Kansas State 78, Missouri 68: Physical Wildcats Catch Fire, Drop Tigers For Second Time
Heading into the season, we feared Mizzou could be done in by foul trouble and minimal size. Only Kansas State has made them pay for their obvious deficiencies, but tonight at Mizzou Arena, they did it for the second time. The Wildcats dominated the interior in the first half on their way to a 10-point halftime lead, and in the second half, with Mizzou taking more chances defensively, they were able to pass their way to a series of good looks from 3-point land. They were 6-for-9 from long range on the night.
Mizzou made things interesting late, cutting KSU's lead to just three points, but every time they had a shot to come all the way back, the rims were unkind. K-State made just enough free throws late to keep their distance, and they pulled their second upset of a Top 10 team in just four days.
Mizzou falls to 25-3 on this blessed season and can still claim a share of the Big 12 title with an admittedly unlikely win at Lawrence this Saturday. Consider this your cute babies and puppies thread and get ready for Saturday.

I'm willing to bet
That this performance doesn’t happen again for the rest of the season…like Southside said…a perfect storm. You live by the 3, you die by the 3, today we died…we’ve got better shooters than that…looking forward to Saturday
I would have thought the same thing after the first KSU game. Alas, it wan't meant to be.
I will take a sweep of the beakers over being swept by the ecokats any day though.
Saturday!
I know you're jumping from one K-State game
to the other, but we’ve done a pretty great job this year of flushing the system after our ugly losses. I expect this team to show up on Saturday with something to prove.

Just checked the box score, and wow.
That was abysmal across the board. We shot 25% from 3 and missed a third of our free throws. I’m going to go ahead & chalk this one up as an exception to this year’s rule.
I will say that this game felt uncomfortably like the type of losses we’ve experienced in the last few years. Even a slightly below average shooting night would probably have won this game, but we just refused to take advantage of our many opportunities.
And my daughter's perfect record falls
Damn, I had such a great picture to post if she ran it through Saturday. I still might post if if we manage to win anyway.
Maybe I'm confused
I’ve been assuming that if we were to sweep kansas and tie with them record wise we would win conference opposed to sharing it as we would own the head-to-head record with both wins. Does the head-to-head matchup not matter?
Only for seeding in the conference tourney
Both teams would get a banner, rings, etc.
by 2.1 seconds left on Feb 21, 2012 8:09 PM CST up reply actions
Nope
If two teams tie, the conference awards two trophies. Only one team can get the #1 seed, but ku will still claim it as a conference title. Just as they have 4 times in their “7 straight” run.
Well only 3 out of the 7, actually
And 2 of those times they beat the other champion (Texas) in the tourney final, so that’s pretty legit.
by 2.1 seconds left on Feb 21, 2012 8:12 PM CST up reply actions
My bad
But you know they’ll still claim it even if Mizzou wins on Saturday. We need aTm or OSU to pull off a miriacle for us if we don’t want to hear “8 straight” out of their pieholes. Especially because nobody will be left to step up to them in the B12.
Ugh

Terrible game. We got outplayed, and we shot pretty lousy. How many 3’s did we miss in those last 3 minutes? We’ve been spoiled this year, cause they usually knock some of those down and win these types of games.
Oh well, I hope we play better on Saturday.

As hard as this was to watch
It seemed like there were SO many times after Dixon hit that three with about 6:30 left to get it back to even and we just went ice cold. That’s what was most frustrating, as bad as it seemed mizzou was playing, they really were right on the verge of tying it up then taking the lead. KSU just shot the lights out. Getting beat by them twice(once being on our home court) is no fluke, but my god they could not miss.
Get it out of your system now

To be honest
I usually feel pretty intimidated going to kansas. Don’t know why but I feel like mizzou really has a good shot at taking them down at their place. Though I think for it to happen, its gonna have to be with the 3 ball(which sounds scary after watching tonight)
Honestly I think that if MU and KSU play 50 times, Mizzou probably wins 45 of them… we just had two low probability games in a row (not SHOCKING low, but still low)
I don't know
They just match up perfectly with us. So it goes.

Ugh just got back from the game. A few thoughts.
1. Kansas State shot their minds out.
2. We needed just one or two more shots to rim home.
3. TOM F&#%ING O"NEAL.
3a. They showed replays to the crowd after Mizzou fouls and we just went apeshit.
4. It happens. Long Season. I don’t get the impression that K-State has our number.

So I would just like to share some thoughts
1.) The league title is still in play.
2.) A number one seed is still in play. Win in Lawrence and win the Big XII tournament and I think we get one. There are still two weeks to go before March Madness.
3.) The ultimate goal should be to advance to the Final Four. Sure, an outright league title on our way out the door would be sweet, but I would happily trade that for a championship.
"This looks like it could be gravy."

to add to this
If A&M wins tomorrow night, then we are pretty much in the same boat we expected to be heading into Saturday’s game. And hopefully this serves as a reminder to the team of how hard we need to play so we can make a glorious run into April.
Question
Say we lose a close game in Lawrence, but win out the rest of the way and take the Big 12 tourney. Is that enough for a one seed?

My apologies for two reasons
My overconfidence in the Trifecta thread tempted angry sports gods, and I actually thought Gottlieb was enjoyable tonight. It’s as if he decided to turn off his contrarian, rebel rousing tendencies and provide commentary for a game for once!
The game sucked, but they were ON and we were OFF. I don’t fault our D as much as others have; they made a metric buttload of tough shots as well as almost every opportunistic shot. If KSU plays like this from here on out, they’re a Sweet 16 team at worst.
We missed layups and open 3s, and took some very dumb shots, so they win, we lose.

I think we need a karma thread between now and Saturday
to ritually cleanse ourselves
Let's not overuse Karma Threads folks
Our team is 25-3. We’ve had plenty of good karma this year, and our guys are tough. They’ll be ready to play on Saturday.
by CBonerfied on Feb 21, 2012 9:28 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
The last karma thread was on a day where
Our best offensive lineman was injured for the entire season and our brand new b-ball coach was accused of a massive NCAA violation by a jailbird. Before that, it was Derrick Washington’s arrest.
That’s the precedent for a karma thread. Not a third loss in a stellar season. If anything, it’s greedy to ask for more karma in the midst of a season where we’ve had so much good karma.

According to WarrenNolen.com
Mizzou’s RPI is 15. The loss dropped the Tigers 5 spots in the RPI. And that will most likely be the final RPI. Also, I wanted to assess the Teams “around” us in terms of losses and here is the breakdown (this could change depending on the MSU-UK game which MSU leads in the second half).
1 loss: Kentucky, Murray State and Syracuse
2 losess: None
3 losses: Harvard, Missouri
4 losses: Duke, Middle Tennessee State, New Mexico, North Carolina, Wagner, Weber State, Wichita State
5 losses: Baylor, Creighton, Drexel, Gonzaga, k*****, Marquette, Michigan State, Nevada, Ohio State, Oral Roberts, St. Louis, St. Mary’s, Southern Miss, Temple
You can bet that the ALL Top 5 “protected” seeds will come from this group.
There is a God and I'm not it, after that EVERYTHING is subjective. Be careful for what you wish for, you just might GET IT!
Our SOS will only improve
Because three of our last four games are vs RPI top 50. Finishing 2-1 or 3-0 would get us higher than 15…I’d almost guarantee it.

SEC-fried Chicken Gizzards
Ingredients
1 pound chicken gizzards, rinsed
2 stalks celery, cut into chunks
1 onion, cut into chunks
2 bay leaves
1 1/2 teaspoons celery salt, divided
1 teaspoon seasoned salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried Italian herb seasoning
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon Louisiana-style hot sauce
3 cups oil for deep frying
1 cup all-purpose flour
Directions
Place the chicken gizzards, celery, onion, bay leaves, and 1 teaspoon of celery salt into a saucepan, and pour in enough water to cover the gizzards by 1 inch. Bring the gizzards to a boil, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until tender, about 2 1/2 hours. Pour in more water during simmering, if needed, to keep gizzards covered. Remove the gizzards to a bowl, discard the celery and onion, and reserve the broth.
Season the gizzards with 1/2 teaspoon of celery salt, the seasoned salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, cumin, and hot sauce, stirring to combine well. Pour 1/3 cup of the reserved broth over the seasoned gizzards, and refrigerate for 30 minutes or more, stirring often. (Save or freeze the remaining broth for another use, if desired.)
Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Place the flour in a plastic bag, and pour in the gizzards with their seasoning. Shake the bag to thoroughly coat the gizzards with flour. Gently lower about 1/4 of the gizzards per batch into the hot oil, and fry until golden brown, about 5 minutes per batch. Drain the gizzards on paper towels, and serve hot.
