John Brown (not from Kansas, just did some fighting there) was, as you say, like Quantrill, a domestic terrorist who killed a lot of innocent people in cold blood. He did it in the utter conviction that it was the lords work to end the evils of slavery, which is at least a sympathetic notion, making me rather conflicted about him.
Not to go all godwinny here, but you can be german and get a good old sports hate-on for England going without waving little “H” flags. Same thing with mr. Q.
I agree mostly
I think MU fans do it at this point in response to the revisionist ‘slaver’ nonsense.
no, it doesn't
when someone calls me a slaver it has no basis in reality.
Mizzouri WAS a slave state back in the day. It was only a small band of MO which actually did the slave owning (unfortunately one that included columbia), and Kansas wasn’t. It was no foregone conclusion that Kansas would be a free state or not – that was the whole reason for the bleeding Kansas thing, it was both sides carrying essentially ethnic cleansing to make sure the state ended up coming down on their side… and the anti-slavery forces one that battle of out vicious-bastarding the pro-slavery side… but that IS what happened.
Germany is extremely admirable in the way it has faced up to its history of facism and not tried to white wash it. Japan has gone shamefully in the opposite direction, and systematically hidden from its population the horrible things it did… and to an extent so have the allies in WWII. Missouri officially did some really bad things a hundred and odd years ago. Trying to pretend that we didn’t is stupid. How can you judge the rest of the world unless you can be realistic about your own sins of the past?
by Wan Ihite on Feb 4, 2012 1:26 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
yes, but all of our ancestors were slave owners if you go back far enough
and beyond that, what does that have to do with me? my family isn’t even from Missouri.
but Mizzou is the polity that you’ve chosen to pull for in this contest. I mean, I wasn’t in Missouri when Norm Stewart played, so it has nothing to do with me, right? No, when you sports-ally yourself you take the good with the bad.
I’m not saying anyone has to be self-hating about this kind of thing. Not at all. I’m just against the self-serving view where I take all the good stuff and get angry when anyone brings up the bag stuff. I’m more for celebrating the good stuff, and being self-aware about the bad.
I disagree about as strongly as I'm allowed to express on this site
First, I became a Missouri fan when I was a child and completely unaware of all this. Second, Missouri was a border state, a state at war with itself over slavery. Third, the University of Missouri as an institution is not Missouri the state so even if we as Missourians have some latent culpability for slavery passed down from our forefathers, the University is a distinct entity whose mascot is named after a group of abolitionists.
To call me or any Missouri Tiger fan a slaver is the worst kind of crossing the line there is in sports fandom. It’s incredibly offensive, it’s based on lies and half-truths, and it completely ignores the fact that I am no more the descendant of slave owners than the most self-righteous of Jayhawk fans.
It's very conflicting being a Missouri fan.
We adopt the Burning Lawrence thing because it’s fun, but when we do it, we open ourselves up to the Slaver thing … even though the “Missouri Tigers” protected Columbia from the “slaver” forces.

I think that's exactly right
So we really shouldn’t adopt the Burning Lawrence thing as part of the rivalry. At the very least,we shouldn’t lionize Quantrill, who in addition to being a terrorist, doesn’t even have the justification of being a terrorist in service of the subjugation of his fellow man. The Jayhawkers were on the right side of history and the right side of morality. Bringing the whole thing up is like reminiscing about that one time the Jayhawks obliterated us by 40 on our home court. To be a Mizzou sports fan you don’t have to be proud of when the team has lost, and in order to be a proud Missourian, you don’t have to whitewash the mistakes the state has made, and foremost among those was being a slave state for as long as we were, and that a good number of our citizens fought in defense of the institution.
At least we’ve got secession on the rest of our conference-mates in the SEC. Though I did notice a disappointing number of Mizzou fans flying the flag of betrayal at Border War tailgates earlier this year. That Missouri was not willing to commit treason in order to defend that pernicious institution is one of our state’s proudest moments, and we should be able to hang it over the head of every stars-and-bars waving fan in the SEC.

The Jayhawkers were murderers who used a noble cause as an excuse to pillage and plunder. Don’t ever try and make them out to be more than they were.

both the jayhawkers and the Anderson/Quantrill group
would be considered what we call these days as ‘unlawful combatants’.
Anything outside of regular Union Army and regular Confederate Army would be considered these days as was crimes.
They were not legally nor morally superior.

The violent activities of both sides were horrible
Some Germans resisted the Nazi’s at great personal hazard, some profiteered, some were ideologically really bad. Germany’s history doesn’t make the German people evil, they’re mostly all just regular people. But they acknowledge the collective evil that gripped their state for a while, in the past.
In exactly the same way, some Missourians fought slavery, some perpetrated it, some profiteered (taking advantage of the chaos to grab free land) and this has no implications for the current moral status of the residents of Missouri. But that doesn’t change that for a while this was the official policy of the state.
To say that any of us, personally, are slavers is like saying that any random German alive now is a Nazi. It’s pretty offensive. But that doesn’t mean that a German person now should go around waving swastikas, no matter HOW big the sports rival they are up against, and how badly the Nazi’s had beaten up on that country.
Quantrill is that kind of figure. It’s fun to say “ra ra we burned down your town”… but when you forefront the name of the guy who did it, you bring up the fact that he took out every male he could find between 16 and 90 in the town and shot them. And he did it in the cause of winning Kansas for the side of slavery. That’s just not kosher.
In the same way
That calling every Kansan a Westboro Baptist Cretationist loon has a grounding in reality.
Both are ridiculous.
actually I quite like that one :)
Also abusing them for their schoolboards attempts to rule out the teaching of evolution is fair game.
And never forget that it was Brown v. the TOPEKA Board of Education

Funny isn’t it how in these chains of grievances, everyone always thinks that it was the other side who did the bad things first, and that they themselves were just responding to level the score. The Balkans are a terrible role model in all of this.
Except I'm not massacring anyone
It’s just sports hate. I actually get to play kU in rugby, and honestly, they are really nice guys, we ordered pizza and had beer after our last game. I just like defending my family history, which has had its roots in Missouri since before 1820, and part of it is the hate between kansas and Missouri. There haven’t been many (any that I know of, hopefully none) murders over this sports rivalry. Just trying to keep it in perspective
"I always heard there were three kinds of suns in Kansas, sunshine, sunflowers, and sons-of-bitches" -Josey Wales
I’m totally all for great sports rivalries, and some mildly revisionist history to paint the other guys as jerks. All for it. In England the chant at soccer games when playing the Germans is “two world wars and one world cup.” All good stuff. I just think waving Quantrill flags is in pretty poor taste, because there really wasn’t anything redeeming about what he did. He didn’t have any real battlefield successes, he wasn’t any kind of war hero, he didn’t make any memorable speeches… literally his ONLY claim to fame is that he did the kind of thing that should put you in prison for a very very long time.

You dropped Direct TV for Roku? Just checked them out on wiki and the service doesn’t look very similar. What do watch all the games on? looks like the sports options are weak.
Just wrote reply and decided to erase it due to length
We watch the games through streaming on our computer, phones, or local bar. We like watching the shows we like when we want to and discovering ones that were lost due to cable/personal scheduling conflicts. We are not tv addicts, so waiting a short time for a new episode is not a big deal. It “The Office” comes out on Tuesday on cable but we have to wait a day or two in order to watch it on our schedule, so be it. (Damn, this still turned out lengthy)

I love my dvr for the same reasons you mention you like roku but I’m old enough that I’m still attached to certain things on broadcast and other shows that I’m sure roku would not be a good fit for me. Our viewing styles are basically on opposite sides of the moon. My satellite bill is just stupid but I pay it to see what I want.

With all these “smart” tv’s coming out with Hulu Plus, Netflix and other networks pre-installed, one would think the monetary incentives would be there

I watched an episode of "HOUSE" last night on Hulu Plus
It was brought to us by Verizon. It still had commercial interruptions but shorter intermissions with less ads. I noticed House was eating an “edible arrangement”. Hello, product placement. They still have many ways to make money. The greed is astounding. Hence why reality tv is such a push. Cheaper to produce then bigger production shows (like Community). If a network can argue about not making money on a popular show in order to make way for a lower budgeted show and make more profit, ya betcha bottom dollar they will. They are making money on these shows.

After reading his diatribes, it’s starting to strike me as him justifying his opinion while it’s being proven wrong in reality. I love numbers and all, but at some point, it’s ridiculous to project big things for a team that has lost 9 games before the end of January.

I love soccer, but I can empathize with your second point
I don’t really have a rooting allegiance aside from the US National Team, which combined with the lack of coverage that other lesser leagues like the NFL and NBA get, make it difficult to get into on a daily/weekly basis.
I really wish that my local MLS team was closer than an hour drive.

That second part is clumsily worded
To clarify, I only have marginal rooting interests in the NFL and NBA, but because they get such coverage(and those around me are big fans) it’s easier to be immersed in a season.

It’s probably pretty dated, but the underlying info about the fanbases, and whether the teams are haves or have nots, remains true.

I am a Spurs fan myself, but did not go through this methodology of selecting them.
They resemble Mizzou in a lot of ways. Some great success in the past, but usually just on the cusp of being really good with a few standout seasons, and one hell of a hated rival.

Reading
As a Kansas City Royals fan I chose the Reading Royals as my EPL team. They have been generally hopeless, and their home colors are royal blue & white, too. That was also the year they were so bad they were relegated to the Championship, so the symmetry with the KC Royals was just too perfect.
I just can't fabricate an interest in a team
If I lived in England, it would be easy. Being born and raised in St. Louis, you all likely know who my favorite pro teams are. Same goes for Mizzou; from there, went there, etc. I’m having real trouble choosing which DC teams I want to follow, since we’re here for the long haul. There’s no connection to any of them. I mean, I enjoy the Nationals, but most games I go to are when the Cards are in town.
I can’t arbitrarily choose my teams. I need some kind of attachment. And I’m not British, so there it is.

If they draft RGIII somehow, though…and get a couple playmakers…it might become more tolerable.

I have great respect for Arsenal, the way they play and the way Wenger develops talent
If they spent like Manchester United/City or Chelsea they wouldn’t be in such a trophy drought. The young kid Oxlade-Chamberlain has made an amazing start and is going to be a special player. Unfortunately Van Persie gets injured too often and he is such a big part of their team.
He's done better this year at not getting injured.
I’m thrilled Arsenal doesn’t spend like everyone else despite the pressure. Eventually the irresponsible spending is going to come back to bite them and Arsenal is going to be in good shape…at least that’s what I tell myself. And The Ox is great…

Supporting arguments:
1) This from the 96-97 PL season:
A brilliant start to the season, mainly down to new signings Les Ferdinand and David Ginola, saw Newcastle establish themselves as favourites for the title. As late on as January, they were still 12 points ahead at the top.
But their nearest rivals Manchester United were getting increasingly better by the time March was in sight, and the gap was narrowed to a single point in early March when an Eric Cantona goal saw the Mancunians grab all the points at St James’ Park. While Alex Ferguson’s side won virtually every remaining game, Newcastle dropped a few vital points and any chances they might have had of making a last-gasp recovery were killed on the final day of the season when they failed to beat Tottenham. Even a win would not have been enough, as Manchester United also won their final game of the campaign.
2) Despite having won the FA Cup 6 times, none have happened in the last half-century
3) We have a very interesting relationship with our current owner…

I love soccer.
But I can see your points. I like the calendar because I can always count on it to be on basically. And I see your point about frontrunning because I hate it too. I still chose one of the big four (Arsenal) after watching a lot of games and deciding I liked their style the best. And this year rooting for Arsenal is hardly frontrunning so I still win! But I do wish I could watch other leagues more. I have some Spanish channels through the UVerse sports package but I would rather listen to commentary in English although I still enjoy the games.

But I also sort of follow Bolton because of Stuart Holden (he’s a Clemson guy). As long as they’re not playing Arsenal I want them to win.

Excellent post
I think one of the beauties of the sport, at least played overseas, is the promotion/relegation aspect. Fewer things are more exciting than watching two lousy teams fighting for survival and millions of dollars on the last day of the season. I scoff when people say every game matters in college football. If you look at the elite leagues in Europe, every win, every tie, and even every goal will matter on the last day of the league.
Oh yeah.

I like international soccer a lot
for national pride.
When it comes to the EPL, it boils down to the smugness of American EPL fans, like they’ve stumbled onto this gold mine, Utopia, beautiful sporting existence. I have one friend who grew up on American sports and just up and swore them off a few years ago to go full bore into the EPL.
That league is more financially f***ed up than ANY American pro league, and more than any league on the planet. It is so much further from competitive and stable than the MLB. Literally 12 of the 20 teams in the league absolutely know that they have zero chance at winning before the season starts.
/end rant, for now
The EPL is actually the most financially egalitarian of any of the big eurpoean soccer leagues.
This is mostly a statement about how unbelievably bad the others are.

Cheering on MIZZOU from all around the world.
I've gotten way into soccer in the last year or so
I’ve always enjoyed watching the game, but I was always held off by point #2. But I’d moved to KC a couple years ago, and suddenly Sporting KC is a ton of fun to watch (it’s absolutely the most entertaining fan experience in KC—Arrowhead for the Chiefs isn’t close, possibly because I’m not worried about unwittingly getting sucked into a drunk redneck brawl at a soccer game—I love the Chiefs, but the crowd keeps me from ever going to games). Really, the SKC game experience is in some ways much more like a college game than a pro game, which is awesome.
And then this fall I just decided to pick an EPL team, basically by watching a bunch of games and seeing who I liked. Ended up picking Chelsea, because Juan Mata is a ton of fun to watch, and I figured I’d pick a London team so that if I’m ever in England I won’t have to travel out to the provinces if I want to see my team play. And, frankly, after years of rooting for the Royals and Mizzou, I felt like I had earned the right to select a team with absolutely unlimited resources. And it’s been fun watching—it turns out that Chelsea is kind of in half-rebuilding/turnover mode this season, so it’s kind of a cool moment where you can see the team they used to be but also the early stages of them becoming whatever team they’re going to be. Granted, tomorrow that means they’ll probably get annihilated by Man U, but oh well.

As far asaprimer goes, it depends on where you want to start following
(on that note, most soccer fans are fans of one particular league, Americans tending to follow MLS and one of the big European leagues consecutively. Almost no one has the time to follow EVERYTHING goingon in the world of soccer at once)
I’ll give a rundown of the American game, since that’s what I’m most familiar with. There are four trophies that MLS teams play for- US Open Cup, Supporter’s Shield, MLS Cup, and CONCACAF Champions League, in ascending order of importance.
US Open Cup is a nice achievement, but a lot of teams play backup in their matches until they get into the semis and finals. It’s a single-elimination cup tournament that any team in the country can enter- even amateurs! MLS teams obviously get byes into the later rounds of the tournament. It’s got a lot of history, being the oldest continually awarded trophy in American sport, but still the least important of the trophies.
The Supporter’s Shield is given to the best regular season team in MLS. It has considerably more cachet than, say, the President’s Trophy primarily because in Europe, that’s how all champions are decided, and also because the league used to follow abalanced schedule, meaning that the playing field was even. Now that they’ve abandoned the balanced schedule, its taken a hit in prestige, but it’s still a goal to strive for.
The MLS Cup is pretty much what you’d expect from American sports. 10 of the MLS teams qualify into a knockout playoff tournament, with the top 6 getting a bye.
CONCACAF Champion’s League is in my opinion the most important trophy MLS clubs can win, though there’ssome debate on that measure. It’s acompetition that draws from all over North America, with Mexico and the US/Canada obviously being the giants in the region. Each team plays a mini-season of6 games (home and away) against the other 3 teams in their group, and the top2 in each groupadvance to the knockout rounds. An American team hasn’t won the competition in its current incarnation, and if we ever can, it’ll be a great sign of our progress against our more experienced southern rivals.
As for advice on a team to support, if you’re a Missourian, Sporting Kansas City isagreat club to follow. They’ve put an entertaining product on the field, the stadium is great, the fan experience is awesome. They’re good, but not so good that you’ll be bandwaggoning them
Judging by the post, though, I’m guessing that you’re in Dallas? If so, there’s always FC Dallas. The fanbase there isn’t as passionate or interesting as others in the league, and the atmosphere at Pizza Hut Park can leave something to be desired, but there’s nothing like following a local team. The local fan culture is absolutely the best way to get into the sport. Buy a ticket in the Supporter’s Section for opening day, head out to The Inferno’s pre-game tailgates (http://www.the-inferno.net/), meet some people, and chant your lungs out.
Oh yes, as far as media to consume
You’re better off going the new media route. Around the League is the best soccer podcast around, bar none, if you want to get into MLS. Soccerbyives.net is one of the best blogs around. Anddepending on the team, SBNation’s stuff can be great. Sounder at Heart is, for example,a pretty solid rival to Rock M Nation for one of the best blogs on the network.
Toronto FC has a RABID fan base, but have put an ongoing collection of suck onto the field for a long time now. One of my good friends follows them somewhat closely, and he’s amused that one of their announcers is a Brit who’s used to covering the premier league, and is always trying to pick his way around being polite about what’s happening on the field (it’s like going from commenting on the NHL to the British hockey league – I’ve looked it up, there is one, with about 12 teams). :)
I don't think that's a fair comparison
It’s more like going from commentating on the pro game to commentating on the college game.

But Josh Hamilton has made a not-insignificant amount of money off of his sobriety/journey/story, so to me, he has a responsibility to be honest about it. my excitement for this game is overwhelming
Look at the crowd at Mizzou Arena this morning. Look at our conversation this morning and leading up to today. Even look at RCT and other kansas media and discussion boards.
Those of us on both sides of the border are so fuc*** excited about this, and this is something we don’t get playing anyone else. We could have a #1 vs #2 game against UK or FL, and it’s not going to feel like this. This kind of hate (and subsequent excitement) takes a century to foster. And in 100 years, we probably won’t feel this way about UK or anyone else, because it’s not just a century of hate. It’s hate born in the freaking civil war. This rivalry was born from our ancestors literally murdering each other and burning entire towns to the ground.
We can say that we’re moving on to a better place (and I think we are too), and that we’ll develop new rivalries (which we will) but we will never, and I repeat never, have another rivalry like we do with those terrible people to the west.
And it is absolutely selfish and short-sighted that administration folks are taking that away from the fans.
Ok, rant over. Cracking open the first beer and getting back to Hate Day excitement!!!!

So in Austin, if there’s snow or ice the city pretty much completely shuts down, which I can understand to a degree because we don’t have any equipment to clear/de-ice the roads. off topic
but appropriate, and I’m killing some time, but, true story here.
One evening about a month and a half ago, despite my no solicitors, sign there is a knock at my door. It is a young man with AT&T selling U-verse. My normal response when people don’t respect my sign is to be very unpleasant and shut the door, but, I was currently having serious issues with Time Warner and was actually considering a switch to U-Verse anyway, so I went through his spiel and he had a good deal to offer. I start looking into the sports channels that I would get in various packages. I’m wearing my MIZZOU hat mind you, so when i ask about the sports channels the salesman says, “so are you a Mizzou fan then?” And I declare, “yes, I am”. To which he replies, “Phil and Matt Pressey are my cousins.” I look at the guy and indeed he bears a resemblance. Then he tells me they have another cousin that plays for the NM Lobos.
So, I don’t think he was BSing me because even the most dedicated salesman is probably not going to remember names of star players on every sports team to claim that he is somehow related in order to help swing a sale AND I’d already decided to switch, so I was already sold.
So, was it BS or not? To you all I pose the question.
