Mizzou 74, Kansas 71: Tigers Move Into First Place With Border War Win
Mizzou plays seven guys, and all seven had to come up huge for the Tigers to beat their Border War rivals tonight. They did. Marcus Denmon took over at the beginning and end, Mike Dixon made two enormous free throws, and the Tigers finished the game on an 11-0 run to move to 21-2 and, more importantly, 8-2 in conference. They are now tied for first place.
When the camera is on, Mizzou has the best fans in the country. Mizzou Arena was absolutely electric tonight.
Congrats, boys ... now if you want to hold onto first, you've got to win in Norman in about 45 hours.

what did he do? I thought he was fairly complimentary of Mizzou when I saw him on
the WWL a few nights ago. I think he said something like Mizzou is positioned to go really far in the tournament. I know he had said things last season …
Irish provenance of the schwa pronunciation of vowels in weakly stressed syllables -> Missoura
I dont really know...
I am thinking it is to the point where people just need to let it go. No one has looked better than Mizzou this past week…some just need to stop caring so much about what other people say at this point. It is not about to start getting any better…remember there was a time when most did not even talk about us at all

That part was more for a.Fan

But like others I feel the use of the term butthurt implies disrespect, which is one of the reasons why I’m sick of people using it.
I read it as a synonym for "sadness because of lost game"
and, again, certainly wasn’t implying any disrespect. I’ve used the word to describe myself, in the appropriate context.

Not gonna lie
At 71-63 I turned off the TV and stormed out of the room to take a breather—just couldn’t deal with how many terrible possessions we’d had in a row. Checked the computer a minute later and saw Mizzou had cut it to five, and then got back to the TV just as Denmon cut it to 2. Bless me, Marcus, for I am guilty of a lack of faith. What an absolutely crazy, back-from-the-dead win that was.
by Professor Chaos on Feb 4, 2012 11:32 PM CST reply actions 1 recs
my mom left when it was 71-63.
She didn’t know we’d won until we called her at home when the game was over. She didn’t believe us, then she turned on the TV. She couldn’t believe ku didn’t score a point after she left, and said she wished she’d been there with us to see it. We told her it wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t left.
She’s terrible luck. She’s not allowed to watch another game this year.
I thought it was over when they went up 8.
I couldn’t believe Kansas kept turning the ball over. Sorry, I mean, I can’t believe the refs kept screwing Kansas and giving the ball back to Mizzou.
"You have to remember, basketball to the University of Miami is like football to the University of Kansas." - Kim English
As my mom was leaving I said to my dad:
“We’re just about into ‘we are dicked’ territory. If we don’t score the next 5 points, this one is over.”
So we scored the next 11.
Exactly, watching the replay, they didn't score from 3:15 in, do we know exactly when they scored last
Oh wait, I don’t care.

…as I sat in my blanket fort.
I dunno man...hockey?
Why do I feel like this is being underplayed?
As much as national player of the year Thomas Robinson (and rightfully so) took the game over in the second half, Marcus Denmon just willed this team to a win. That was a 9-0 Denmon run.
Legen…..wait for it…..DARY!!!
When Denmon made that "called" three
you could just tell he wanted and knew he was going to make something
We won that because of Marcus
hands down.
What excites me is that we won tonight because of three guys: Dixon, English, Denmon. Cold to say this, but the other four in our rotation had no bearing in the outcome—most damning, Ratliffe and Phil Pressey. If we play our A game in Lawrence, and find out a way to limit Robinson, we can do this again. Swear.

Also
Matt went to the ground to get the Taylor turnover and got the assist on Marcus’s game-winning three.
I don't understand the Matt Pressey hate honestly.
I know what the guy is … and when it comes to scoring he is streaky at best. But I’ll gladly take all of the other contributions he gives us over not having him on the court during crunch time. I seriously believe some people don’t even watch the game except to see who scores the points and then decides that nobody else contributed.
I’m known as a bit of a dreamer!
To be clear, I'm tongue in cheek with the Matt Pressey stuff
he’s a good defender, and he’s not an incapable offensive player. But he’s down there with Steve in terms of offensive ability on this team, so him taking a less than perfect shot is rarely going to be a great idea. As such, I like to lampoon his decision making.

Understand the point, but the guards put him into a couple of those positions
The passes off the screen and roll were unfair to him, should he have caught them, maybe, but it probably wasn’t the best play.
I just love Steve so much, remembering back to his days as a freshmen riding the pine with no future
i think sometimes they forget that he doesn't have ricardo's hands
and he’s not nearly as light on his feet.
Yes, Steve's defensive presence on Robinson at the end of the game was critical
I dunno man...hockey?

MPressey is terrible on the offensive end most of the time and I end of yelling at him quite a bit, but take a bit to watch what he does on the defensive end and you will understand why he gets on the court. There are two sides to a basketball court.
by tigers-royals on Feb 4, 2012 11:43 PM CST up reply actions
I am a Matt Pressey apologist
and let me tell you, he was awful tonight on offense. I didn’t see any bad things defensively, so he has that going for him.
I with you.
I hate him on offense, but the fact that he is a pretty big guard has given a lot of team’s trouble this year. If he was consistent offensively he would be a major factor.
by tigers-royals on Feb 4, 2012 11:46 PM CST up reply actions
he's not consistent because he likes to shoot jumpers.
when he gets to the lane, he’s good for 3-4 big buckets a game
I agree with that
but on the offensive end he doesn’t seem to take his shots within the flow of the offense. My main point is that the guy is a starter because of his contribution on defense which I don’t think should be understated even when he lacks on the offesensive side of the ball.
by tigers-royals on Feb 4, 2012 11:51 PM CST up reply actions
Sorry for the typos. A little hyped and buzzed at this point.
by tigers-royals on Feb 4, 2012 11:51 PM CST up reply actions
also hyped and buzzed
he’s really an odd contributor. we get all pissed off at him for probably 80% of his offensive possessions, make or miss, and then the other 20% seem to be some of the biggest of the game. and he’s glue on defense but has the second lowest steal rate on the team, only in front of ricardo… quiet in all the ways you want a guy to be loud and loud mostly in the ways that make you want to shoot someone.
With you.
If he didn’t force it (a la Baylor game), he’s a HUGE contributor and another reason why we’re tough to beat. Tonight? The opposite.
Pressey also didn't have his 1 boneheaded foul tonight
And got credited with a foul that Ratliffe committed, so even though he took probably 4 bad shots, he played fairly good the rest of the way.
He mostly guarded Elijah Johnson, right?
Dude had a good, but not great game. I think he might have helped produce some of Plakn’s six turnovers as well.

did you eat a Booches before the Tech game last Saturday? I think my group may have given up our table after our burgers to you and your friend.
I did in fact
that was the only game I am likely to see this year, and was the first time I had been to Booches since I moved out of Como in 2006. We ended up with a full table of 11 I think and a $120 tab…but thanks for letting us get the table :-)

Getting into the game sucked
The student section mobbed the doors even though they had been in lines before. Ended up losing all but one of my friends. Got squished so often, and had one of those temporary fence/barrier things dropped on my head.
I would go through all of that 100 times to re-live that game.

Apparently Both
On ESPN they interviewed Denmon and asked him why he waved off students but I’ve seen articles elsewhere that mention English as waving off the crowd. Either way, I agree with the players. We were the favorite at home where we haven’t lost all year. Expect to win. Plenty of places to go in Columbia to celebrate the win after the game, no need to storm the court.
Watching a replay of the end of the game, you can see Denmon put his hand out
to wave off the crowd and English looks like he’s pushing out with both his hands to signal the fans to stay put.

nice to read this quote from Bill Self after the game.......
“I will say this: So much has been made about the hatred and that stuff,” Self said. “Hey, this is hard for me to say to Missouri people, but I thought tonight that was about as classy an atmosphere as there is. I hope it’ll be the same way when they come over to our place. I’m sure it will be.”
I was glad to see our fans representing well before and during the game, well except for the one jackass who threw something on the court but that’s just one out of close to 15k at the game.
I was just about to post this.
I was in the student section and was very proud of how we represented our school, Especially with DGB and his family right there in the middle of the students. We have been known to get a little out of hand sometimes when it comes to KU, but tonight we were nothing but class and I was very glad of that.
