Mizzou 74, Kansas 71: Tigers Move Into First Place With Border War Win

COLUMBIA, MO - FEBRUARY 04: Steve Moore #32 of the Missouri Tigers celebrates a 74-71 win over the Kansas Jayhawks at Mizzou Arena on February 4, 2012 in Columbia, Missouri. (Photo by Ed Zurga/Getty Images)

Mizzou plays seven guys, and all seven had to come up huge for the Tigers to beat their Border War rivals tonight. They did. Marcus Denmon took over at the beginning and end, Mike Dixon made two enormous free throws, and the Tigers finished the game on an 11-0 run to move to 21-2 and, more importantly, 8-2 in conference. They are now tied for first place.

When the camera is on, Mizzou has the best fans in the country. Mizzou Arena was absolutely electric tonight.

Congrats, boys ... now if you want to hold onto first, you've got to win in Norman in about 45 hours.

I am thinking it is to the point where people just need to let it go. No one has looked better than Mizzou this past week…some just need to stop caring so much about what other people say at this point. It is not about to start getting any better…remember there was a time when most did not even talk about us at all

At 71-63 I turned off the TV and stormed out of the room to take a breather—just couldn’t deal with how many terrible possessions we’d had in a row. Checked the computer a minute later and saw Mizzou had cut it to five, and then got back to the TV just as Denmon cut it to 2. Bless me, Marcus, for I am guilty of a lack of faith. What an absolutely crazy, back-from-the-dead win that was.

What excites me is that we won tonight because of three guys: Dixon, English, Denmon. Cold to say this, but the other four in our rotation had no bearing in the outcome—most damning, Ratliffe and Phil Pressey. If we play our A game in Lawrence, and find out a way to limit Robinson, we can do this again. Swear.

I don't understand the Matt Pressey hate honestly.

I know what the guy is … and when it comes to scoring he is streaky at best. But I’ll gladly take all of the other contributions he gives us over not having him on the court during crunch time. I seriously believe some people don’t even watch the game except to see who scores the points and then decides that nobody else contributed.

I’m known as a bit of a dreamer!

by MizzouRah04 on Feb 5, 2012 10:12 AM CST up reply actions

To be clear, I'm tongue in cheek with the Matt Pressey stuff

he’s a good defender, and he’s not an incapable offensive player. But he’s down there with Steve in terms of offensive ability on this team, so him taking a less than perfect shot is rarely going to be a great idea. As such, I like to lampoon his decision making.

The passes off the screen and roll were unfair to him, should he have caught them, maybe, but it probably wasn’t the best play.

Okay

MPressey is terrible on the offensive end most of the time and I end of yelling at him quite a bit, but take a bit to watch what he does on the defensive end and you will understand why he gets on the court. There are two sides to a basketball court.

by tigers-royals on Feb 4, 2012 11:43 PM CST up reply actions

I am a Matt Pressey apologist

and let me tell you, he was awful tonight on offense. I didn’t see any bad things defensively, so he has that going for him.

by CBonerfied on Feb 4, 2012 11:44 PM CST up reply actions

I with you.

I hate him on offense, but the fact that he is a pretty big guard has given a lot of team’s trouble this year. If he was consistent offensively he would be a major factor.

by tigers-royals on Feb 4, 2012 11:46 PM CST up reply actions

he's not consistent because he likes to shoot jumpers.

when he gets to the lane, he’s good for 3-4 big buckets a game

by kevinf on Feb 4, 2012 11:47 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with that

but on the offensive end he doesn’t seem to take his shots within the flow of the offense. My main point is that the guy is a starter because of his contribution on defense which I don’t think should be understated even when he lacks on the offesensive side of the ball.

by tigers-royals on Feb 4, 2012 11:51 PM CST up reply actions

also hyped and buzzed

he’s really an odd contributor. we get all pissed off at him for probably 80% of his offensive possessions, make or miss, and then the other 20% seem to be some of the biggest of the game. and he’s glue on defense but has the second lowest steal rate on the team, only in front of ricardo… quiet in all the ways you want a guy to be loud and loud mostly in the ways that make you want to shoot someone.

by kevinf on Feb 4, 2012 11:56 PM CST up reply actions

With you.

If he didn’t force it (a la Baylor game), he’s a HUGE contributor and another reason why we’re tough to beat. Tonight? The opposite.

by CBonerfied on Feb 5, 2012 12:01 AM CST up reply actions

Pressey also didn't have his 1 boneheaded foul tonight

And got credited with a foul that Ratliffe committed, so even though he took probably 4 bad shots, he played fairly good the rest of the way.

The student section mobbed the doors even though they had been in lines before. Ended up losing all but one of my friends. Got squished so often, and had one of those temporary fence/barrier things dropped on my head.

I would go through all of that 100 times to re-live that game.

I also think Gottlieb has been pretty fair to Mizzou this year (although I dislike his general style). I guess to each its own. I just like Vitale’s energy, and I think he does a fair amount of research on the frosh players.

Apparently Both

On ESPN they interviewed Denmon and asked him why he waved off students but I’ve seen articles elsewhere that mention English as waving off the crowd. Either way, I agree with the players. We were the favorite at home where we haven’t lost all year. Expect to win. Plenty of places to go in Columbia to celebrate the win after the game, no need to storm the court.

to wave off the crowd and English looks like he’s pushing out with both his hands to signal the fans to stay put.

I was glad to see our fans representing well before and during the game, well except for the one jackass who threw something on the court but that’s just one out of close to 15k at the game.
