Mizzou Basketball Links, 2-6-12
You can probably do the math. Since I didn't include any links in yesterday's Study Hall post, I've got an absolute boatload to share today. And since I don't want some of the others to get missed because of the wealth of Mizzou-Kansas links, we're going to break them out into two different posts. (And while we're at it ... huge content day at Rock M. Two links posts, a podcast (!!!!!!), an OU preview, and, in hopefully the early afternoon, Rock-M-Tology's 2012 debut!

Hmmmm....
Do I put Baby C in her MIZZOU gear or do I breakout the OU gear. Quite the dilemma. (For those that don’t know, I grew up in Oklahoma and attended OU)
If Sleeping Rally Baby wears OU gear, Mizzou will not win another game this year.

Rally Baby (who shares OKC Tiger Daughter’s first name) has to stay true to her Mizzou roots. After tonight’s game and when we’re fully in the SEC, crimson and creme will be OK, but until then, BLACK & GOLD all the way…..please!

I’m predicting after Weis fails and Zenger gets canned, the next Kansas AD will schedule Missouri in basketball. Neutral site in KC.

Rocky Balboa once told me, "Nothing is real if you don't believe in who you are."
Talking to the guys at RCT (went out of curosity, stayed for some surprisingly civil conversation) they make a pretty good case about why they wouldn’t play in basketball (particularly the financial thing plus it’s a no-win game for them. You’re SUPPOSED to win, so nobody cares if you do, and it’s a big upset if you lose)… Their case for not playing again in football is much weaker though (allowing some time to recover a minimal level of competence).
Hy-Vee is never going to sponsor Kansas v Kentucky
The Border War provides monetary possibilities that no other rivalry, not even the Sunflower Showdown, can provide. Given that Bill Self has admitted that Kansas has pretty much peaked as far as what they can make from basketball, you would think the extra income from the Border War would be welcome. But then, Kansas has a long history of cutting off their beaks to spite Missouri. If they don’t want to continue, so be it. But they aren’t good at anything except basketball and this current run they’re on has to end at some point.

bogus
plus it’s a no-win game for them. You’re SUPPOSED to win, so nobody cares if you do, and it’s a big upset if you lose
That’s exactly why Mizzou shouldn’t want to play them in football… yet we’ve clearly expressed interest even though it’s clearly not for selfish/financial reasons, but entirely to build goodwill among the fanbase and the state.

Save the 2007 game, we've been increasingly subsidizing them in football every year
Each year, worse product on the field, fewer butts in the seats, yet they still get their payout. Moreover, the football payout would cover whatever losses they supposedly think they would take from playing basketball. There is no logic to the refusal to play, it’s all emotional. If they would just admit that, I’d be ok with it because at least it would be honest. But the money issue is just a justification after the fact to cover the fact that Mizzou maneuvered them into looking like the bad guys.

"I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are in alphabetical order. Like they should be."
Perhaps I shouldn't say this...
but I believe the reasons we won that game were twofold:
1) Denmoney
2) They stopped giving Robinson the ball.
We simply had no answer for him… but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy watching him walk off stunned after the flexing and barking he did during the game.

3) Good Tyshawn was thrown down the stairs in the last three minutes by Bad Tyshawn
"You have to remember, basketball to the University of Miami is like football to the University of Kansas." - Kim English
by Gaknar on Feb 6, 2012 9:25 AM CST up reply actions 3 recs
Absolutely true too.
They panned to Tyshawn with about 2-3 minutes left and he had this look on his face… I turned to my wife and said ‘I think Bad Tyshawn is about to make an appearance’. Thank goodness he did. I think Bad Tyshawn is 2a, because Good Tyshawn would have given the ball to Robinson more.
On the flipside of the coin (no pun intended), what the crap happened to the Presseys? They were terrible. At one point early in the game, I counted 10 of 14 points given up on bad rotations by Phil… and combined 2 of 10 for 4 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 turnovers in 49 minutes? Ouch. That free throw miss late in the game didn’t come back to bite us, but it certainly could have. If one thing gives me hope for Lawrence, it’s that the guy who normally makes the offense tick, Phil, played poorly and we still won.

The thing that was confirmed for me during this game...
is that Dick Vitale is a horrible basketball analyst. I get that he’s TV-friendly from the aspect of his catchphrases and whatnot, but wow does he bring nothing to the table in real analysis. Of course, him saying Mizzou is ruining college basketball and doesn’t belong in the SEC over and over didn’t make me any fonder of him.
I guess we’re reconciling it by winning, though.
I can sum it up for you.
“Missouri doesn’t belong in the SEC, blah blah blah, Coach [Norm] Stewart and I agree on that, Missouri belongs here [in the Big 12]” and Dan Shulman (sp?) played along agreeing with his every sentence. No mention, of course, of the other myriad influences which actually CAUSED the move.

considering he has to deal with KU fans all the time-
I do sort of understand his dismissive attitude. I am continually amazed how readily they eat their own- saw lots of Taylor bashing on KU boards after last night, when in reality they never get to that nice lead w/o him.
May of them swing wildly from loving their players to trashing the crap out of them. I have no idea what they will/would do if one of BS’s (and let’s just refer to him by those initials, they do very much fit) teams actually are only average.
But BS very much acts like a child at times- I think he fits the usual profile of a win-at-all-cost, highly successful coach- in other words, a high-strung a##hole.

Surely, I do not fit in this category.
The very best comment I heard Saturday night...

Deathstar, What we learned from the keyboard of Eamonn Brennan
“Kansas was not helped by an iffy late charge call on Tyshawn Taylor that just as easily could have been a blocking foul on Michael Dixon…Even worse, that call wasn’t nearly as egregious as the one against Robinson with 1:43 remaining; that easily could have been a block on Mizzou forward Steve Moore, an and-1 bucket for Robinson and a potential six-point swing, given Marcus Denmon’s huge go-ahead 3 a few seconds later. Kansas fans are not at all happy about this turn of events, and they have every right to their anger.”

Lunardi has us as the #1 in the West (Phoenix) while Kansas is #2 in St. Louis. As nice as the higher seeding looks, I’d rather have #2 in STL than #1 in Phoenix. I don’t think the road to the FF is easier by playing UNC away from home than it is by playing OSU in our backyard.

If they judge OSU to be the 3rd best team in the field
and Mizzou the 4th, it would be a humongous shaft job to OSU if the committee kept Mizzou in St. Louis. OSU would have earned the right to a home-court advantage in the Sweet 16/Elite 8, and by their stated rules, we would not have. Seems fair to me.

It would absolutely be fair to put OSU in St. Louis Regional
Doesn’t mean I can’t wish it was different.

If Mizzou wins out or wins the Big 12 regular season outright somehow
the chances of being one of the top 3 are very strong. The Big Ten is a bear right now, and OSU will lose some games before the end of the season. Syracuse and Kentucky seem like very solid bets to be the top two teams in the country and will be difficult to overcome, though.
We’re all even bigger Baylor fans than we normally would be Wednesday night. A Baylor win, followed by Mizzou wins tonight and Saturday, would mean that Mizzou controls its own destiny. And even if we lost at AFH, winning out otherwise would put us in the drivers’ seat for the #1 seed in the conference tourney.

it's probably not out of the realm of possibility
for the b12 to get two #1’s, either.

If Mike Alden had gotten us into the Big Ten, this wouldn't be an issue

It' too bad they didn't pull out some old throwback jerseys, shorts and shoes
the smoke from the fireworks in a lot of those photos takes you back to a different time.
The fireworks were a very cool touch. I happened to have my camera ready.

I was JUST coming here to say the same thing.
I LOVE the photos from Saturday. The smoke hanging in the background looks like the game was played 60 years ago. Especially looking up into Mizzou Arena, which has more of a throwback look than Hearnes ever did.
