Missouri 71, Oklahoma 68: Tigers Survive Hot-Shooting Sooners

As seems to be the custom when Missouri plays in the state of Oklahoma, Mizzou encountered a team shooting over its heads, partly because of slow defensive rotations early on, and partly because basketball makes no sense sometimes. Steven Pledger and Carl Blair combined to make seven of 11 3-pointers, Sam Grooms shot 7-for-9 from the field, and Oklahoma was able to keep things close in a slow-paced game. Mizzou played the entire second half with the lead, however, and despite some offensive issues late, they survived when Pledger actually missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

In the end, Mizzou did indeed survive, style points or no. Marcus Denmon scored 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting, Ricardo Ratliffe had 15 points and 10 rebounds, Mike Dixon scored 13, and Kim English made an enormous 3-pointer of his own with about a minute left. Survive, advance, et cetera. The game played out like the trap game we feared it would be, but the Tigers figured out a way to win anyway. Now it's time to get ready for Baylor on Saturday.

WHAT SAY YOU, DR. SOYOYE???

I think I figured out how they make it

and possibly why. Their low- and non- alcoholic beers are made, as all others are, by applying light heat to the beer under semi-vacuum conditions. This causes the alcohol, which has a significantly lower boiling point than water, to be extracted from the beer.

I imagine that the alcohol from a product like O’Douls is now being injected directly into Bud Light Platinum. I’m sure Budweiser was using this alcohol for a purpose already, now it’s likely they are putting most of it into one product. Perhaps they will even siphon some away from other products as well, if there is enough success with this one.

My apologies for nerding out!

It was pretty clear that by the end of his tenure, Haley was in passive-aggressive mode

There was simply no excuse for not starting Orton over Palko, and Haley had a history of dumb play calling and stupid gambles. The Chiefs actually have pretty good talent on the field, Haley just didn’t know what to do with it.

by Gaknar on Feb 6, 2012 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

Well, Pioli hasn't done much to dispel the notion

…that Bill Belichick/Tom Brady are almost entirely responsible for the Patriots’ understanding of football. Deadspin of all sources actually put the “Patriot Way” crap perfectly.

(I swear half their success is based around the fact that they are the only team in the NFL that actually manages the clock right for the most part. I swear NFL teams would be better off hiring some kid who has played Madden too much to make end of half/game clock decisions. That and beat it into these people’s heads to stay in bounds when you are trying to burn clock.)

It's the genius syndrome

Success requires having the right people in the right place at the right time, but when it happens, everyone thinks they are the reason. Pioli suffers from Smartest Man in the Room syndrome and he needs to get over it.

The Chiefs need help on offensive and defensive line

Their linebackers and secondary are great. If Charles comes back they have a strong running game, good receivers. They aren’t going to get a new qb, but even modest improvement on the o-line would be enough to make Cassel a game manager. As weak as the AFC West is, the Chiefs absolutely could make a run next year.

Offensive line and

QB need to be addressed but there’s talent.

Defensively, even with 5 blowouts, we were the 12th overall ranked defense. I don’t think that happens without having “good talent on the field”.

Also, it’s hard to judge an offense when Tyler Palko is installed as the QB.

The 5 year Charlie Weis era

How in the world does that guy think he’s going to be able to recruit anyone (even by kU football standards) in 2 years when he’s announced that he’s going to leave.

Anyone else feel like the slow down offense hurts us?

Our team / offense is based mostly around making the defense guard us for long lengths of time, and good movement of the ball and people until we get the defense out of position and find an open shot. The slow down kind of negates all the natural movement in our offense and makes us much easier to guard.

I'm just thinking of the other times we've slowed it down / ran four corners.

Just seems like our chances of getting a good shot decrease.

by DnrW on Feb 6, 2012 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not a fan of MU slowing it down.

We don’t seem to get good shots, nor, does it seem, rebounds either. Folks just seem to stand around watching the ball-handler. Our slowdown really breaks our flow of the game.

Our “regular” half-court offense moves and shares the ball and finds the open shot and generally uses up 25 seconds or more. I don’t think there’s much value in a slow down to gain a few seconds when we lose our flow, don’t get the best shot and don’t get the board. It’s almost like a prevent defense is football…..

Anyone read what Coach K said about current college basketball?

“The only thing that might change it is what the NBA does,” Coach K said on SiriusXM’s Inside College Basketball on Monday afternoon. “We’re slaves to what the NBA does with the early-entry. If they ever put that in on a two-year basis, you’ll see more dominant teams.”

Didn’t the NBA used to have no rule at all, so that players could go right out of high school? His argument seems to me to run counter to the facts.

by Jerilac on Feb 6, 2012 8:53 PM CST reply actions

Well before that rule

All the players that were NBA ready wen’t straight there, so college teams were all players that weren’t ready for the NBA, who stayed for at least 2 years.

by smbz5b on Feb 6, 2012 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, that's a good point, but his argument seems to be that

teams aren’t as good now because the good players aren’t staying in school, which they weren’t in the past either, in face they were leaving earlier.

by Jerilac on Feb 6, 2012 8:55 PM CST up reply actions

That really only applies to top schools, I think

Mid-majors are doing better because they get to keep their guys for four years, while schools like Kansas have a handful of players with one and done mercs mixed in.

"You have to remember, basketball to the University of Miami is like football to the University of Kansas." - Kim English

by Gaknar on Feb 6, 2012 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

So his argument would be the NBA needs to help schools like Duke and Kentucky

be more dominant by not giving them the option of getting the one-and-dones so they can take the players the mid-majors currently have instead? That seems silly to me, if Duke really thought they’d be more dominant with those players, they’d take them in the first place.

I had not seen it during the game

..but classy stuff from our group trying to pick up Pledger after the final missed 3. He did everything he could to keep OU in it at the end, great effort from him and nice for our boys to recognize that.

My wife got a Facebook message

from some lady she met at a work training like two jobs ago that was filled with Big 12 hate for Mizzou. This chick went to OSU, so decided to fire off a bunch of random hatred at Mizzou just before the Fiesta Bowl.

I asked her why she would remain friends with someone who would act like that & who she really didn’t know. Her answer: “She’s getting married soon, and I want to see the pictures before I unfriend her.”

It seems most schools like to make shirts when they beat kU, even if they are our rival. It must be something about the beakers, not Mizzou.

What's even better than beating Oklahoma is we might as well have just beat Kansas again.

I’m sure all their fans were glued to the TV just hoping for the Tigers to drop that game and were cursing at the ending. Now they get another evening of bad feelings while they hold their breath knowing that their team is on the spot this week against the Bears. The pressure is on the Jayhawks.
