He was not a popular hire with anybody, The Minutes included. But Haith has pushed every button astutely in a dream debut season at Missouri, taking the Tigers into the top five even after the season-ending knee injury suffered by big man Laurence Bowers.

Yes, Haith inherited a flush roster from predecessor Mike Anderson. But this group never played like it is now for Anderson. Haith has fostered a greater chemistry and produced great offensive cohesion while simultaneously letting this athletic team retain its fearless personality. Nice work.

I really like forde even more now that he's not with ESPN

He does a good job of letting fans know about more than just the top 10 teams in the polls, or their own conference.

wasn’t he bashing ESPN’s role in re-alignment pretty regularly? Did the Deathstar go all North Korea message control and can him?

Maybe this is just my impression

But it seems like a lot of the big multimedia conglomerates are throwing a lot of money into trying to break ESPN’s hold on the sports market, including hiring away writers, and I think ESPN has realized that the casual fan doesn’t really care who the talking heads are, so they can just plug a new one in.

by Damnatio Memoriae on Feb 7, 2012 12:54 PM CST up reply actions

I think that is what ESPN thinks, and that if guys start to write anything but the company line that they can get rid of them

They have lost some really good college guys lately because of this, and cbs is all the better for it.

I half-jokingly pointed this out yesterday

But I think ESPN has made a series of realizations that are sadly, pretty much correct.

-If you have the content, i.e. you outbid the competition to cover the events, both the serious and casual sports fans will watch.
-Serious analysis doesn’t fly with casual sports fans, and serious fans will seek it out elsewhere anyway (like here).
-That space freed up by not doing serious analysis can be used to craft sports into a dramatic narrative, that will get non-sports fans to watch.

I actually got rid of cable in part because of that

Or, more accurately, when my wife and I moved into our house, we just never got cable. Almost anything on ESPN that I want to watch I can watch on ESPN3. Couple that with the fact that History/Discovery/Food network have all gone to an all reality all the time line-up, and I just couldn’t justify the cost anymore.

And ESPN.com is hot garbage. The content is similar to the network, and the forums are nothing but trolls trolling other trolls.

by Damnatio Memoriae on Feb 7, 2012 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

Just say ESPN is hot garbage.

Between their obvious conflict of interest w/Mike Leach (including suspending Bruce Feldman) and the increasing of sports/entertainment programming (like I turn on a sports channel to see movie previews and interviews with actors or musicians), I hate that channel.

The Mike Leach thing is hot garbage

in about as close to an objective sense as you can have in media, because they shaped the story by the way they reported it without acknowledging their bias. Same goes for their spin on conference realignment.

Their programming choices (outside of the actual events) is hot garbage from my (very subjective) point of view, because it’s simply not the content I want to see/read/etc. I’m sure they have an army of very bright people figuring out what to cover and how to cover it in order to maximize their profits. The real “problem” is that there are more casual sports fans than serious ones, but that’s really just a matter of personal tastes.

by Damnatio Memoriae on Feb 7, 2012 2:52 PM CST up reply actions

Yep, if it's on ESPN3 anyone can watch it

and most content on ESPN/2/U/Ocho is also on ESPN3. Some of it is not, and if it isn’t and you click on the associated ESPN/2/U/Ocho icon, it will ask you for your provider and a password. But as long as it says ESPN3 next to it, anyone should be able to watch.

Yeah. I like that he addressed the argument re Haith coaching LMA's players

I hate the argument that you can’t give Haith credit because he is winning with LMA’s players. LMA had the same squad, plus Bowers and Safford, and they pretty much sucked last year. Haith has less talent and depth, yet they are in the top 4 in the country and may win our first Big 12 conf title. Seems to me that the fact that he is doing way more with the same players (minus 2 key players from last year) says a lot. Haith is hands down a better coach.

by STLVATO on Feb 7, 2012 11:34 AM CST reply actions

Well, they do have a year more of experience

Denmon and Flip in particular took big steps forward. But you’re right that this team is probably no more talented than last year’s, and Haith is doing a tn better with them.

I think what he was trying to say is some people will say he got a flush roster

and it’s hard to argue that – Ratliffe might break the all-time shooting percentage record; Denmon is (in Forde’s mind at least) a legitimate candidate for National POY; Flip is an incredible point guard; Michael Dixon is probably going to win 6th man of the year and Kim English is a stud this year.

But, as Forde points out, Haith is the one who brought all of this talent out in the group. Same group couldn’t do anything like this last year.

I don't... maybe kacc does.

I just remember in general how stupid I was about it.

TK, you didn't post on the initial "Haith is hired" post, at least.

u2n, let’s just say that you’re on the record from that evening.

I believe I wanted to organize a group to meet at Haith's plane and boo him

Chizik style. So when we win the national title your all welcome. It was obviously a cleverly planned reverse jinx.

No shame here

I’m on record as saying “Frank who?”, but that’s about as bad as it got with me. I’m cool like that.

I reviewed the "what to expect from Frank Haith" parts 1 and 2.

Everyone was surprising optimistic after Bill C. busted out the stats.

Except this guy: http://www.sbnation.com/users/falcons05

Who (and I paraphrase) “made [his] point, and made [his] point, and made [his] point, and made [his] point, and made [his] point, and made [his] point, and made [his] point, and made [his] point, and made [his] point, and made [his] point, and made [his] point, and made [his] point, and made [his] point, and made [his] point, and made [his] point…”

Gotta love his picture thingy.

Frank Haith with the banned symbol over his face (the circle crossed out thingy).

Seriously. What Mizzou fan would be on board with that right now. Even if you’re a virulent racist or the fanboy of some other coach. You can’t deny the record.

Im pretty sure my first few posts were sub-par at best

Its kinda like when I used to meet girls for the first time tho, I would constantly joke about how small my manhood was so that if they were lucky enough to see it, they’d be pleasantly surprised that it was not in fact child like.

From little research however, I am guessing that it worked infinitely better than mine.

I bought myself a car.

It was the first manual I drove, I also learned how to drive with it in one night.

Stalls happened often at first.

Same here. Here's how I learned to drive stick:

“Here’s the keys. See you at home.”

There was some bucking in the parking lot for a while, but I figured it out and drove it to school and work the next day. I never thought it was that hard… later I found out some people consider it terribly difficult.

I’m not sure what it was that brought me out, if I figure it out, I’ll let you guys know who to lynch.

NEW BEAKER LOGIC ALERT:

“Mizzou sucks and is irrelevant because OU fans didn’t even bother to show up last night”

Ummm…hi. This says that OU fans don’t care about OU basketball this year. Really grasping at straws with this line of thought.
