Fox Sports MW: Tigers aim for sweep of Baylor - Bernie Says Nice Things
Post-Dispatch: Bernie BytesWe have praised Missouri's basketball team for its record, its hard work, its unselfish and unified play. But I wanted to mention something that deserves more praise: this is a classy group. It really is. Two things made that perfectly clear in recent days. First, after MU raced back to upend Kansas on Saturday night, Kim English and Marcus Denmon took a stand and discouraged fans from rushing the court at Mizzou Arena. Why? A simple reason: the Tigers' players expect to win home games, even against Kansas, so there's no need to act like you've never won a big game before. I like that. Second, when Oklahoma's Steven Pledger missed a 3-point buzzer shot that would have tied Missouri on Monday night, he slumped to the floor -- distraught by the miss. MU's Ricardo Ratliffe and English displayed first-rate sportsmanship and fine decency by walking over to Pledger to help him up and console him. The OU hoops office was so impressed by that, it posted a photo of the scene on Twitter and praised Ratliffe and English.
Other Basketball Links
Mizzou can lose at Lawrence and still take at least a share of the conference title as long as Kansas loses to somebody else. Last night was a good opportunity for such a loss, but the Jayhawks proved once again that if you punch Baylor in the mouth, the Bears might fold. I would call a 32-4 run "folding." So now, of course, I have to say ... Go Kansas State (next Monday)!

It doesn't sound like Norm Stewart is a fan of Mizzou's move to the SEC
“Nobody seems to be interested in history. If they were, we might not be where we are today.”
Or is that a jab at conference realignment as a whole?

We're not going to go back at this point
So, I am not liking the comments and articles with Norm throwing this out there. We get it by now. He doesn’t like the move. I didn’t either for the same reasons he doesn’t but I was not going to change this and neither is he. So either he needs to realize this and stay on the Mizzou bus or hopefully he just starts another campaign to rally for. This bus is SEC bound and I am a Mizzou fan. The loyalties should be with Mizzou, not the conference as much. Maybe he needs a ceremony and a rocking chair on the floor that has his name on it because having his name on it, apparently is not enough.

norm stewart can do whatever he wants, in this old man's opinion.
he is where mizzou basketball, at least successful mizzou basketball, started. and he kept it that way for eons. as far as i’m concerned, outside of some crime, he’s got a lifetime pass.

Was not my intention. Just wish those kind of comments were made public before the choice was made. To make them now is not doing Mizzou any good in the p.r. dept.

Yeah, I respect his opinion.
And all things being equal, I’m sure Mizzou would love to have stayed in the Big 12. But they weren’t and Mizzou made the best decision for the program. Personally, I agree with TK that Norm can say whatever he wants. He made Mizzou basketball a perennially respectable team, and I think his nostalgia is the same we all have for those rivalries and that history. It shouldn’t cloud Mizzou’s judgment, though, and I’m glad it didn’t.

I hold Norm Stewart in the highest regard.
He is still, the living history of, Missouri Basketball. However, because of the way his departure was handled he will probably never walk in step with present day Missouri basketball or the University itself. That’s disappointing, but that’s the way I see this playing out until Norm…is no longer with us on this earth. He is a Missourian after all.

That wasn't just Stu
They alluded to it several times during the game.
Zeller killed UNC late in the game, btw. Last 3 possessions:
Duke, down 3, shoots a long three that would be an air ball. Zeller jumps up near the rim and for no reason I can understand, tries to swat/tip the ball rather than just grab it. It goes off his hand and in for 2 points.
They inbound the ball to Zeller, up 1. He’s immediately fouled and goes 1 of 2 from the free throw line. Making both would have put them up 3 and guaranteed no worse than overtime.
Duke comes up on the court, Zeller is on Austin Rivers at the 3 point line and he stands there with his hands down at his sides. You know what Mark Jackson says… Hand down, man down. He makes an effort but it’s too late. Game over.

So Arkansas looks like they're pretty much out of NCAA tourney but maybe they can make the NIT
Seeing as Mizzou’s move to the SEC means we’re going to be linked with Arkansas for as long as Mike Anderson is there, I think we’re going to be tracking his success.
If Anderson makes the NIT with this team in a basketball weak SEC, is he further along than he was in his first year at Mizzou where he went 18-12?

Yeah, according to the WWL they had the #9 recruiting class this year.
So I’d think not making the tourney would be a pretty big disappointment there.
Missouri was a mess when xCMA took over… he had to fill scholarships in a hurry with Butters and Hannah, and fortunately Tiller came with him. I knew it would take 2-3 years to get that roster turned around, and it did.
Farther along? I’m not sure. He’s got more highly touted recruits, but the results aren’t there yet. I think that would be more disappointing to a fan.
by u2nspenserfan on Feb 9, 2012 8:57 AM CST up reply actions
I'd say no
we were about bankrupt as a program when he arrived. His 18-12 year was a hell of an accomplishment, and it proved that he could lead a program. Handling Athena Gate the following season only increased that.
This Arkansas team has been affected by injuries and one high-profile transfer (Clarke), but he has a boatload of talent, a fairly weak conference, and no pressure to win over the fan base. And he’s still flunking road challenges at every opportunity.
It would be hilarious to see what happens two or three years from now if CMA cannot have a season like he did for us in 2008-2009. The most entitled fans in the world just might turn on their prodigal son.

I'm just going to go ahead and disagree
I completely understand not discussing politics and religion, because those are contentious issues where the arguments are almost entirely non-falsifiable. Evolution has been as thoroughly proven by the scientific method as anything can be without direct observation. If we can’t even discuss things like that, for fear of offending someone, well…

meh.
evolution is a religion, same as christianity (mine) or any other religion. nobody was there to see how it all started, so at first, it’s faith-based. as such, it shouldn’t be discussed as it’s offensive to christians to hear how God didn’t create from scratch. same as it’s offensive to atheists for me to tell them they need Jesus to forgive them of their sins. let’s just not do it, as it’s far too polarizing.

First of all, I'm not worried about offending anyone or being offended by discussion of evolution.
I just don’t feel that it belongs here. Second, evolution cannot be proven because it cannot be observed. The fossil record certainly doesn’t do it. I am talking about macroevolution, not microevolution or adaptations within a species. Finding fault with the sometimes blind acceptance of evolutionary theory does not constitute a mental disorder. You attempt to differentiate between religion/politics and evolution, but it is not that simple. Evolution is a very contentious topic. Because I don’t want to have this discussion invade a SPORTS blog, I will stop now.
by cchstove on Feb 9, 2012 2:16 PM CST up reply actions 2 recs
evolution is science
and is therefore in the realm of observable fact, not subjective feelings a la religion and politics… whether the earth is, in fact, round is also a contentious topic amongst some people. Does that mean we can’t make a passing reference to circumnavigation, for fear of strife invading our SPORTS blog?

The X axis shows simply GHz, with no description of what frequency it's representing.
The Y axis has a good description but lacks units.
There’s only one value indicated on the X-axis and none on the Y (other than 0).
Admittedly, the values on axis part is reaching.
That particular value could be all that’s necessary to interpret the results. However, unless you’re an expert in the field, that’s an uninformative graph.
I really do not want to discuss this here.
I am well aware of what constitutes science and what is and is not an observable fact. There is a reason it is not called the “fact” of evolution, but rather the “theory” of evolution. There are many subjective areas in the science of evolution and significant extrapolation of small pieces of information which cannot be observed or proved. It’s adherents cling to them as vehemently as those of any religion do. Your link, while amusing, does not apply because it is something that can be proved. Evolution on a macro scale (species evolving from other species) is not observable/provable.
Let's have the discussion
between “hypothesis”, “theory”, and “fact” now.

I hope this means that the fight has been taken out of the Bears. I know Saturday will be a do-or-die game for them, but beating 0-3 against the top two can’t be good for the psyche.

Since Scott Drew is coaching them, it’s a better chance that they fold. If our crowd is loud and we get off to a good start on Saturday, it could get hilarious.

They better not come into Columbia Saturday hitting 80% of contested shots, ripping down rebounds, and running up and down the floor looking like they are a top 10 team.
Of course, I put 2-1 odds they will.

Not sure about that
It’s pretty clear that ku is better than Baylor. If our guys duplicate their effort from Saturday night while competing on the boards like they did in Waco, we win by 15+.
does Scott Drew EVER get mad?
Admittedly, I didn’t watch the whole game, but his complete lack of intensity seems to very much be reflected by his team. It’s like he is afraid to coach them tough, at all, maybe because he thinks he has to take a pillow-soft approach in every way to get the high level recruits he has been getting?
I find the constant red-faced screaming approach of BS and Frank Martin very unattractive, but it certainly seems to work much better than the ‘oh gee, guys, can we maybe try a little harder, please? I promise extra cookies and milk post game if you do!’ deal.
I just hope KState doesn’t pull a ‘roll over and scratch my belly, KU’ effort, too. I seriously question whether they have the proper amount of desire to beat what is supposed to be a big rival- or any thought that they are even capable of beating them. If I were Frank, I would blast all the kissy-face crap that KState players have been doing towards the KU players recently. I think they are waaay, waaay too OK with getting beaten by them- because they’re really such sweet guys, and, hey, they are KU, and obviously better. Sad.
I thought it was funny during the Oklahoma game when
Denmon inadvertently passed the ball to Haith and Haith flung it to the ground. Good way to get the point across, especially since he doesn’t lose it very often.

I wish you guys weren’t having quite as much success, but if you’re going to have it, I’m glad it’s coming with the group of guys that are on the team right now. Bernie is right that MU’s group is a classy group, and Kim English stands out especially.
It would be a lot easier to say “good riddance” to a team full of Jason Sutherlands that a team with English, Denmon, Ratliffe and Bowers. Whatever his faults, Mike Anderson did a good job bringing those guys to MU.

How Mizzou matches up with other elite teams they could meet in the tourney
If Mizzou has to face any of the following teams in the tourney, who do you all think are the most favorable and unfavorable matchups, and why?
Kentucky
Syracuse
Ohio State
Duke
UNC
Favorable: I say OSU and UNC. Sullinger is a monster, for sure, and their D is rated well, but their shooting % against isn’t top notch; they win by turning teams over and eliminating second chance points. We don’t turn it over very much, and second chance points aren’t exactly our bread and butter. If we’re making shots, we stand a good chance of beating them.
UNC…something about them strikes me as a bunch of great parts that don’t equal a great team. Good Flip neutralizes Marshall, and UNC would have matchup troubles against English, Dixon, and Denmon when we’re on offense.
Duke I’m on the fence with. Both great offensive teams, both have struggling defensive numbers, and each rely mostly on guards. But they have like 8 Plumlees at 6’10" or whatever, so they can at least throw waves of players at Cardo on D.
Unfavorable: Mostly Kentucky, then Syracuse. Kentucky is incredibly athletic, they shut down opponents’ ability to get easy 2 point buckets, and would create huge matchup problems for us when we’re on D.
Syracuse’s zone is quite tight, and they’re tall and athletic with Melo in. Although the Tigers pass the ball well and can reverse the ball quickly (keys to beating Cuse), they would need a high-low game going, which generally requires two offensively talented post players.
Thoughts/opinions?
With Kentucky, you just have to draw the game out long enough for the NCAA to find a recruiting violation and strip Calipari of yet another Final Four

I'm not sure anyone can match Kentucky.
With a shot blocker like Davis and the rest of their athleticism I think this year’s tournament is Kentucky’s to lose. I would put Duke firmly in the favorable column. They have size yes, but their size likes to get into foul trouble and disappear on offense for extend periods. They also have no perimeter defense, like at all. The only thing that is keeping them in games is the three ball (almost half of their shot attempts last night were from behind the arc) so if they’re cold we could run them out of the gym.

Agreed.
..but your reasoning for a bad matchup with MU v Syracuse is their great zone.
Am I wrong in typing that supposedly this was the reason Baylor was going to destroy MU?
I agree Syracuse is a bad match up but with the way MU has been able to pass the ball and force a ton of other teams out of their zone because MU was breaking it…I wonder.
by MarioVanPeebles Republic of China on Feb 9, 2012 11:29 AM CST up reply actions
Baylor's zone can't hold a candle to 'Cuse's
Cuse is aggressive, ball challenging, yet is very good at spacing.
Gut says
Duke and UNC, good matchup since they’re both down this year.
Ohio State, maybe on the right day.
Kentucky and Syracuse, probably not.
