Missouri and Nike will unveil the school's new branding images and uniforms on April 14, the day of the Black and Gold spring scrimmage. Missouri is keeping a tight lid on details for the new threads, but Pinkel said MU is fortunate to have two unique features when it comes to the school's brand: the word "Mizzou" and the Tiger head logo. You'll notice he didn't say the block M. There's a reason the Tiger logo replaced the block M on Faurot Field in 2003, and I suspect Missouri's helmets will get a similar facelift. Why the change? I was told a few months ago that when Nike analyzed Missouri's brand profile, the company found that casual fans associate the block M logo with Michigan, even though Michigan's helmets don't feature an M. The Tiger logo is more unique, unmistakably Missouri's. Pinkel said the group of former Tigers now playing in the NFL got to see the new designs last week and gave them rave reviews.

It makes sense in that regard

We basically only use the Tiger Head oval at this point. I can see going to the logo on the helmets at this point.

I hope we don't just go to the oval logo on the helmets.

I really hope they do something much better than that with the logo.

I also hope that the uniforms at least stay somewhat similar to what we have had. I think the current look is pretty sleek, shiny and sexy and one of the best looks in the country. I don’t know how they can improve on it and I hope the helmets keep their shine.

If some of the former players weren’t too thrilled, would they admit it and if they did, I wonder if Coach Pinkel would have said that some of them weren’t too thrilled or just left out that part.

Hopefully the new unis are a home run. They weren’t broke so they didn’t need fixing but so far I think Coach Pinkel and the athletic department have been doing a fantastic job with our brand and image so I have to trust them though I am a bit worried. If I were a youngster, I would want to look sexy, shiny and cool while sporting my school uniform. I never was a big fan of some of the drabby, plain, dull, boring old unis that some schools seem to cling too, though I won’t name them.

I'm a little bummed.

I think the uniform should change as little as possible, and that includes the helmet. But, I can recall instances where this happened to me (wearing a Mizzou hat and someone asked about Michigan), so perhaps it’s for the best.

When I first came to Columbia I was very confused what the big M was on the bridge by the stadium. Why did they have the Michigan sign? And then I realized it must be M for Missouri, and I thought “that’s cheesy, why would they rip off the Michigan M so exactly?”

I have no idea what the actual historical ordering was of who picked up what when, but when you see something that is very similar to a familiar emblem, you ASSUME that the familiar one came first, and you’re annoyed/confused by the new (to you) one.

Switching to the Tigers head is a smart move.

A friend and I were discussing this while talking about stadium expansion

How long will the administration keep the hill and Rock M a part of the stadium? I said it should never be replaced (I mean, what would we call this site after it’s gone?) but my friend had a good point. Those GA seats are so far away from the field we could put in seats just like in the south endzone.

I wonder if the Rock M would eventually go away since the administration feels the M is commonly associated with Michigan.

I’m really excited to see what our new uniforms look like!

by Scott Phillips on Feb 9, 2012 7:40 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

I hope you are right. Can you imagine the uproar if that happened?

Also, I don’t know if this has been discussed, but I really hope we don’t lose the diamond M-I-S-S-O-U-R-I in the endzone with the re-branding/new turf initiative. I really like that design. The only alternative I think would work is if they changed it to a diamond M-I-Z-Z-O-U.

Agree with this hunch

I believe I had read where Nike, while also redoing all unis, will also be redesigning the field and the court and both will likely match in terms of design as well as best they can. Ergo, I believe we are likely to see MIZZOU in at least one endzone probably sans diamonds

But getting rid of the rock M would really grind my gears. Now moving it closer to the field so we can put seats above it? I’m 100% on board with that. Putting seats on the north concourse as it currently stands will have those seats way way too far from the field as it is currently configured.

I love that Mizzou is moving forward with more unique branding. That, along with success on the field, will help us stand out. Stuff like this catches recruits eyes.

Mizzou’s a tradition oriented school. I would never change that about it, and I LOVE our traditions (the Rock M in the endzone included). But sometimes, you have to evolve. That’s why I was for a move to the SEC, and I’m for this redesign….as long as they don’t go all Oregon on us.

The M comes from the rock M in our stadium. It helps tie together some of the traditions. I don’t think the M nesecarily has to stay on the helmet, but it should be somewhere on the uniform, maybe front and center on the collar or on the pants where the current tiger logo is.

The traditionalist in me is throwing a hissy fit

But the realist in me totally gets it.

My freshman year at Mizzou (2000-01) was the first or second year for the current Tiger logo, officially abandoning the “M” Tiger Paw. I remember how disappointed I was at the time. I grew up with the “M” Tiger Paw. I had a decal of it hanging on the back window of my ’88 Chevy Nova. It was Mizzou to me.

Now, a little more than 10 years later, I hardly miss the old logo at all. And I’m sure in 10 more years, I won’t miss the Block “M” on the football helmets either. (Or at least not as much as I think I will.)

Alas, change is never easy. But sometimes it’s for the better.

You'll get over it...just breathe

Does it pain you that the actual “classic” M is the one that Michigan sports and made so? :-)

I just think our uniforms look great.

We have the some of the best uniforms in college football, I don’t understand the need to fix something that isn’t broken. I won’t pass real judgment until I see them but so far I don’t like the idea.

I agree, but what version of them and since what year?

Hell, the unis have changed about 3 times in the last 18 years since I have been paying attention. Anyone here remember “Earning our Stripes”?

My point here is certainly not to bust your balls, but just to point out that our tradition is not in the uni or helmet design. What I think makes our unis so great is what is very likely to continue to make them great, and that is the color scheme of black, white and some shade of gold that I am guessing will be just as “gold” as any other gold is, along with the fact that the unis will represent Mizzou.

You might think the current uniforms are great,

I think they suck compared to the 02 uniforms.

i thought someone posted on here a link

that said michigan was actually the copycats of the block M design. (of course, i’m far too lazy to look it up.)

I dont know that we outright gave it to them

But I know it was ours and I know it is now theirs and I know they did not steal it from us. I believe we just did not protect it and allowed them to take it all those years ago

It's really not all that classic...

The M isn’t a “traditional” part of the helmet, numbers are.

Check out New College Helmets for 2011

I guess D-III Manchester isn’t worried about infringing on Michigan’s brand. Or Mizzou’s.

Maybe we had to get new helmets

because we gave our old ones to Manchester? Manchester’s new look is infinitely better than D-III Kean’s new design.

I think the smaller schools can pay a licensing fee

and get a design for the helmets. In high school, we had the Redskins logo for a few years, and they switched the Florida St. sticker after I left. Another school had Wiskey “W” on theirs.

Upholding fine Mizzou traditions in Maryland.

Downloaded a scores app for my new BB Bold

And our football team is in the SE conf on that too. Kinda weird finding football there & basketball still in the big 12

Interesting reading on the University of Michigan website.

Maybe it’s just the conspiracy theorist in me, but does the information below have anything to do with our upcoming change? Did we lose a peeing match for the Block M?

As of February 1, 2012, the Seal will no longer be available for other uses.

The Block M is one of the most recognizable university symbols in the world. In order to leverage that recognition, and take advantage of our enviable brand positioning, the Block M will now become the principal graphic mark of the University of Michigan.

If Michigan wanted to get litigious...

…I would become real good friends with Princeton and Delaware, whose use of that helmet design came before Michigan used it.

I had a guy say to me(I was wearing my Mizzou hat with Tiger logo on front)…Are you a LSU fan? Then he saw the back of the hat and read Mizzou. However, a bagger at Gelson’s talked to me about the Mizzou basketball team upon seeing my hat. For those who don’t know I live in LA. I wanted to show my Missouri helmet from "77 but I don’t know how to post pics.

Yeah, none of that is happening. Our colors aren’t distinct enough for this to be a factor.

Not a night Owl.....

I used to live in Columbia. Was a season ticket holder for both football and basketball. My wife works for the Dept. Of Defense so we are now based in Germany. Rock M is the best way to keep up with all things Mizzou. Its just so happens that when I get on in the morning here its 7 hours difference. We get to watch every game but sometimes that means getting up at 2 or 3 in the morning like for the KU game last weekend. Looking forward to tomarrows game cause it will only be 7:30 PM here. Go Tigers! MIZ-

Block M with the tiger head in the middle?

I might be OK with that, if it’s done right. Not sure how it would look with a black M unless it was similar to those “combat” unis from the ku game a few years ago. I’m thinking something along those lines with the tiger head standing out on the dark gray helmet.

by tigerdog9396 on Feb 10, 2012 6:54 AM CST via mobile reply actions

Oddest school my Mizzou gear has been confused for...Virginia, I have no clue why

Interesting that uniform changes illicit this kind of discussion. If they change drastically, cool, if they don’t change much, cool. Pinkel still our coach, players still the same, home games still at Faurot? I’m good.

by MUPete on Feb 10, 2012 9:44 AM CST reply actions

I could go with a combo of the tiger head

and block M but not just the Tiger head.

I hate the uniform trend in last 5 years, however, so I stand apart from many here.
