Spicing up the spring game, getting ready for Baton Rouge, and keeping an eye on Boston.

I woke up and found a LOT more people on Twitter than I normally find at 4:30 a.m. Here's to hoping for the safest, quickest possible conclusion to the Boston manhunt ... well, unless it just ended ... Twitter's a little confusing right now...

I'm not going to comment on the William Moore arrest linked below ... we need a lot more information, but it stinks regardless.

The Trib (Dave Matter): Spicing up the Missouri spring game

Short of inviting Skrillex to provide the soundtrack to the Black and Gold Game, MU officials could afford to create some more buzz around its annual spring finale. A few suggestions…

Play a real game with normal scoring: For years, MU pitted the offense versus the defense and eschewed the normal game-day scoring system for a convoluted set-up that awarded points for first downs, third-down stops, takeaways, sacks, etc. Last year, MU tweaked the format somewhat and matched the first-team offense and defense against the second-team offense and defense for the first half, spotting the backups a charitable lead. In the second half, the game went back to offense vs. defense.

I say scrap both systems. Former Missouri Coach Larry Smith once let members of the media pick the teams for the spring scrimmage, which sounds like a fine idea.

    PowerMizzou: Black and Gold battles

Starting Cornerback: E.J. Gaines has one spot locked down and is probably Missouri's best returning defensive player. On the other side, Randy Ponder is the current starter. But he's gotten a strong spring push from redshirt sophomore David Johnson. Johnson has speed to burn but needed a couple years in college because he did not start playing football until his junior year in high school. Expect Ponder to emerge from spring on top of the depth chart, but do not expect it to be a foregone conclusion that he starts the season opener. Don't write off John Gibson as a contributor or challenger either.

Starting Offensive Guard: With Evan Boehm moving to center, Missouri has three players competing for two starts. Connor McGovern has drawn rave reviews this spring. He missed Mizzou's last practice, but is expected to scrimmage. Max Copeland started last year and is in position to do the same this year. Ole Miss transfer Mitch Hall has had a strong spring and was atop the depth chart when McGovern sat out on Tuesday. All three will play, but only two can start. Jordan Williams could figure into the rotation as well with a strong spring finale and a good fall camp performance.
