Mizzou Links, 8-2-13: All practice reports, all the time

1. Oh Captain, my Captain

Post-Dispatch: Franklin among four seniors voted captain
KC Star: QB James Franklin chosen as one of MU's captains
The Trib (Behind the Stripes): Franklin, Gaines, Washington, Wilson named Missouri's 2013 captains

If I'd made an official prediction for this year's captains, I'd have guessed E.J. Gaines, Andrew Wilson, L'Damian Washington, and Justin Britt. I guess a 75% is only a C, but the miss was a good miss. We probably don't want to read too much into anything at this stage, but it can only be considered a good thing that James Franklin's teammates, the ones he GAVE UP ON!!!!!! and DIDN'T CARE ENOUGH ABOUT!!!! last year, liked him enough to elect him captain. As you see in about 16 links below, it doesn't guarantee him the starting job, but ... well, he was already the massive favorite, and he still is.

While it was just the opening day, both Franklin and Washington appeared to have a strong rapport. The two helped move new offensive coordinator Josh Henson's offensive effectively and helped set the pace for an efficient opening practice. Franklin hit Washington on a nice pass down the sideline and came right back to his fellow senior a few plays later with a catch and run down the middle. It's early and the defense didn't have the pads on, but it was great seeing those two hook up early this fall.

Also a great sign for Tiger fans was the play of Henry Josey. One of college football's most exciting players two seasons ago, Josey appeared quick in the open field and gives Missouri a great three-headed option at running back along with Russell Hansbrough and Marcus Murphy.

Captaincy doesn't equal starting job for Mizzou's Franklin
Pinkel bends on practice routine

Junior college transfer Duron Singleton will not be joining the team, Gary Pinkel said. Singleton was listed on the most updated team roster that was distributed to media today, but he did not practice. "For personal reasons he will not come to Mizzou," Pinkel said. He would not disclose those personal reasons. Singleton, a New Orleans native who played at Fresno City, Calif., Community College, was expected to compete for a prime role in the secondary.

Here was Singleton's Facebook status on July 25: "Man words cant even describe how I feel right now.. I put so much into being where I am today and to be here. one word # Blessed # SEC # mizzou"

Obviously, something changed in the last seven days.

Camp Notes: Pinkel says captain post does not equal QB job for Franklin

Sophomore Dorial Green-Beckham is now listed as a starter at the Tigers' "X" wide receiver position. If you'll remember, Green-Beckham was listed as a backup at the "X" behind senior Marcus Lucas on the media days depth chart. But that doesn't mean Lucas has been demoted. No, he's at the newly noted "Y" wide receiver position, to go along with "X," "Z," and "H." That means Missouri's latest depth chart has 12 men on offense. I think most officiating crews would frown upon that. I kid. What that probably means is what we thought it meant when Green-Beckham was listed as Lucas' backup -- both will see the field a bunch, sometimes at the same time, sometimes with the tight end off the field or Lucas moved inside.

Gaines starts Missouri football fall camp with something to prove

Franklin, Washington and Wilson are reserved, but Gaines' leadership shows up in different ways.

Gaines, who once had his hair cut in a blond mohawk, turned heads with the unique design he shaved into the side of his head before camp. As he removed his helmet after Thursday's practice, he revealed the haircut along with an ear-to-ear smile. He laughed with reporters and joked with teammates.

"I think the main thing is just speaking up as a captain," Gaines said. "And show them that you deserve respect."

Even though he appears loose, his smile disappears when talking about 2012.

Three-star safety won't enroll at Missouri
Missouri’s Franklin is a captain but not a starter — yet

Freshman defensive tackle Josh Augusta has qualified and attended Thursday’s practice.

Pinkel actually grinned when asked about Augusta, a three-star recruit from Peoria, Ill., who is one of Missouri’s highest-rated prospects in the Class of 2013.

"Yeah. he's a great kid," Pinkel said. "He worked very hard, too. I'm very proud of him."

There weren't many depth-chart surprises (beyond the 12-man offense), but during stretch lines, John Gibson lined up in Gaines' vacated spot while the senior led stretches. Gibson appears to be the top back-up at both cornerback spots, but the competition between Randy Ponder and he will be a big storyline this August.

At left tackle, freshman Clay Rhodes lined up as the third-string option, although there are only two other scholarship players to choose from who are both ahead of him -- Justin Britt and Anthony Gatti. Rhodes is listed at 6-foot-5, 290-pounds and has gotten noticeably bigger since the end of his senior year in high school.

Pinkel says Franklin's captaincy carries no weight in fight for starting role

"The first thing, first message I said is what Don James said to me," Pinkel answered. "I'm sitting there with Jack Lambert, and I was sitting there with a guy named Eddie Woodard. You know who Jack Lambert is. He was in the Hall of Fame. Eddie Woodard is a minister now. The first thing he [James] said to me -- to all three of us -- was: 'This has nothing to do with you keeping your job.' That's the first thing he said. That's the first thing I said to my captains. In 23 years of having captains, that's the first thing I say to them. This has nothing to do with you keeping your job. OK? There is no bonus because you're captain to keep your job. I said it to them. I said it to every captain, no matter what."

Fall Camp 2013: Day 1 Report

So basically, here are the five takeaways:

1. Duron Singleton's not coming. And hopefully that's the last of the bad news regarding the 2013 recruiting class.

2. James Franklin is not guaranteed to start just because he's a captain (but he was already the leader and will still probably start).

3. See??? Dorial Green-Beckham is a starter!!

4. E.J. Gaines is pretty great.

5. Clay Rhodes is a big boy.
