MUtigers.com: Tigers Return Home vs. Arkansas State
The Trib (Beyond the Box Score) The Scouting Report: Arkansas State

* A pair of explosive transfers: Arkansas State's offense entered last week's game at Memphis ranked No. 15 in the nation. That didn't last long. But part of the reason the Red Wolves were there is because they've got two once-highly recruited transfers: QB Adam Kennedy (Utah State) and RB David Oku (Tennessee). Kennedy, a three-star  recruit out of junior college, led Utah State to a bowl game in 2011 before losing the starting gig the next year. Oku was ranked as the No. 1 all-purpose back in the nation by Rivals.com in 2009 before flopping in two seasons at UT and leaving. Kennedy has completed 78 of 124 passes for 869 yards. He's thrown two touchdowns and tossed his first interception last week. Oku leads ASU in rushing with 291 yards and is averaging 4.5 yards a game and has scored four times. […]

* Oh line: Arkansas State returned most of a two-deep offensive line from last season, but things have gotten off to a rocky start. The Red Wolves, as mentioned previously in this post, allowed seven sacks to a Memphis team that has been one of the worst in major college football for the last few years. ASU has allowed 11 sacks this season, ranking it 107th of 123 FBS teams. Kennedy took fault for some of the sacks last week. The QB said Memphis was dropping its outside linebackers, taking away its easy, short passes and leading to him holding the ball for too long.

Media Day
The Trib (Behind the Stripes): Gary Pinkel Speaks: Week 4
MUtigers.com: Mizzou Football Media Day Quotes - Sept. 23

On Dorial Green-Beckham's first career 100-yard game...
"After the game, and after we win, it is a big deal. It is great that it happened. He has been working to get better, and you can see that. His position throughout the game caught like 11 passes, and I think he had eight of them. He is talented, but the other guys did some good things as well. I am pleased with the whole group overall. They held on to the football, and it is important that they continue to make big plays." […]

On Kony Ealy's ability to get his hands up during passing...
"I think he is gifted a little bit there with that ability. It is kind of a part of him. He has great range as a player. He is just a big guy, and has great size overall. It is fun to see him batting down a couple balls down, and taking it out. It was a big play for us against Indiana. It was 14-14 and then we just scored, and he flipped the game back right around for us. He got us back up 28-14 after that play, and I liked how our football team handled the situation. It is huge when your defense can make those kinds of plays."

3-3-5? No?
Post-Dispatch: Mizzou's new look baffles Indiana

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel referred to it as a "30 defense," a nod to the presence of three down linemen.

Outside linebacker Kentrell Brothers called it a "40 defense," a nod to the four linebackers who roam behind the defensive line.

In this case, though, safety Ian Simon, normally the team’s extra defensive back in the nickel package, lined up at strongside linebacker in the new set, playing alongside three other linebackers.

But, Steckel insisted, don’t call it a 3-3-5 defense — even though the personnel on the field included three linemen, three linebackers and five defensive backs. In Saturday’s case, Steckel mixed a three-man line and three linebackers within the nickel defense, which he later acknowledged gave the appearance of a 3-3-5 package.

"Coach Stec is going to beat me up for saying this," defensive end Kony Ealy said. "I don’t know what else he wants me to call it, but it was a 3-3-5. That’s what it kind of looked like."

Whatever it’s called, it worked.
