SEC Basketball Fever - Hold onto your butts!

Beth Hall-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to the new SEC Fever, brought you this week by me, but in the future by Belegcam and myself. With the two of us running this show you'll get two updates per week (Thursdays and Sundays) covering so much SEC basketball it'll make your head spin.

What you'll be getting are: chronological game recaps from the associated SB Nation site of each school (if they touch on it, you know this isn't FOOTBALL), highlight videos when available, bracketology as it is available, interesting SEC related basketball stories, SEC standings, a breakdown of the week in numbers (not Bill C numbers, just record) and finally we'll both pick a game to watch that will directly impact an upcoming Mizzou opponent, so for this coming week I'll be watching Georgia and SCAR engage in Murderball and give some analysis mid week.

Let us know what you think, if you'd like to see more, less or something different we haven't thought of. This first post is going to be quite lengthy, but going forward it obviously will be cut in half. So, without further ado, please enjoy SEC Fever FanPost #1!

Arkansas (87) Kentucky (85) OT - January 14

Arkansas Fight reacts sort of.

QUAAAAALS!

A Sea of Blue reacts

Well, this was a game that Kentucky didn't need to lose, but they did anyway. The dark side of this game for Kentucky is that this places them in a tougher position to win that coveted #1 or #2 seed. Losing to Arkansas, a team that is significantly underrated (in my opinion) takes on the tenor of a fairly bad loss in a conference with few opportunities for good wins. But at this point, with unbeatens starting to fall (Wisconsin took a much worse loss, objectively, in Bloomington last night), it is possible that other teams may help elevate Kentucky back up to where they need to be to get a top 2 seed

Florida (72) Georgia (50) - January 14

Dawg Sports Recounts the Game

If Tuesday's game in Gainesville was a test then the Bulldogs failed miserably. An early 24-4 run by Florida sealed Georgia's fate early and the Bulldogs looked powerless against the Gators' pressure in what turned out to be a 72-50 loss.

Alligator Army Recaps

By the end of Florida's 72-50 win over the Bulldogs, there were only echoes of cheers — and of one loud and repeated appeal to the NCAA — and memories of yet another easy win for the Gators against a supposed rival.

Ole Miss (88) - LSU (74) OT - January 15

Red Cup Rebellion reacts

This was one of, if not the most complete game the Rebels have played all season, and it came in a must-win game. Saturday in Starkville, the Rebels had a season high TO% (21.1%) and a season low FTR (17.4) They forced a season low opponent TO% (11.8%) and gave up a season high opponent FTR (72.4). They had to have this one.

And The Valley Shook reacts

LSU couldn't close out what would have been a huge road win. Instead, the Tigers dropped a heartbreaker in OT, raising some serious questions about the program's future.

Texas A&M (75) - South Carolina (67) - January 15

Good Bull Hunting reacts

Texas A&M grinds out a 75-67 victory over South Carolina behind Jamal Jones and a spectacular effort from the Aggie bench.

Garnet and Black Attack reacts

The Gamecocks went into College Station knowing that, for the third time in their first three SEC games, they'd be facing one of the best defenses the conference offers. For the first time in those three games, Carolina met the challenge, scoring 67 points in just 64 possessions against the Aggies.

Alabama (80) - Mississippi State (61) - January 15

Roll Bama Roll Reacts

The Alabama Crimson Tide finally played a complete game on Wednesday night to defeat Mississippi State 80-61 in front of 10,112 at Coleman Coliseum. The win, as most games will be the rest of the way, was a must for 'Bama. The Tide evened their record at 8-8, 2-1 in the SEC. The Bulldogs dropped to 11-5, 1-2 in conference.

For Whom the Cowbell Tolls did not seem to mention this game happening, so they are silent on the matter.

Tennessee (78) - Auburn (67) - January 15

Neither SB Nation site did more than a lightly participated live thread (by RMN standards) so in their place is the SEC Digital Network's recap. And here are links to the Tennesseee game thread and Auburn game thread.

Vanderbilt (78) - Mizzou (75) - January 16

Rock M Nation Study Hall

The good news, as it were, is that there's not much of a pattern here. Obviously Mizzou's performance against a zone defense has been maddening at times, but that wasn't the No. 1 reason why the Tigers lost last night. Georgia rebounded at a level far above normal against Missouri last week. Auburn got above-their-head contributions from a couple of reserves, which kept AU close to the end. And Vanderbilt obviously shot absurdly well from long range. Mizzou rebounded well against Auburn and Vandy, and neither Georgia nor Auburn shot well from 3-point range.

Anchor Gold did not do a recap because they are very excited about their new football coach. Here is a link to their game thread if that does anything for you.

Kentucky (74) - Tennessee (66) - January 18

A Sea of Blue Reacts

It is never, ever a bad thing to defeat the Tennessee Volunteers in any sport, but particularly in basketball, where they own the distinction of having defeated theKentucky Wildcats more times than any other SEC team. So a win over Tennessee is sweet, whether it be by 1 in triple-overtime or 8 in regulation.

Rocky Top Talk Reacts

The Vols came up short, falling 74-66 to the Kentucky Wildcats at Rupp Arena despite a stellar start that had them firing on all cylinders and generally doing no wrong. Jarnell Stokes was more than the terrific player he's been, he was the beast we'd been imagining since he stepped those big 20s on campus. Unfortunately, Kentucky closed the gap late in the first half, grabbed the lead, and then extended that gap in the second, and Tennessee never recovered.

Texas A&M (72) - Mississippi State (81) - January 18

Good Bull Hunting Reacts

Poor rebounding, questionable officiating, and a few bizarre events led to a nine point overtime loss at Mississippi State.

For whom the cowbell tolls did not have a post on this game, they did do a preview, but no game post.

Official recap from the SEC Website

Arkansas (61) - Georgia (66) OT- January 18

Arkansas Fight recats

Back to square one. Again. The Mike Anderson-led Razorbacks did what they do so well on the road. In their second true road game of the season, the Hogs came closer to notching their first road win against an SEC team with a winning record. The Razorbacks imploded and leave Athens on the short end of a 66-61 overtime game.

Dawg Sports Reacts

Georgia bounces back from Tuesday's loss in Gainesville with a hard fought 66-61 overtime win over Arkansas. The Bulldogs survived what was an overall ugly affair offensively for both teams but once again did the dirty work on the boards and that proved to be the difference.

Mizzou (68) - Alabama (47) - January 18

Rock M Nation Study Hall

Safe to say, whatever message Frank Haith tried to send about perimeter defense after the disaster in the first half of the Vandy game ... it was received. That was an absolutely awesome 40 minutes of defense.

Roll Bama Roll Reacts

Alabama went on the road Saturday in search of their first road victory of the season, and instead got run out of the gym in the second half by the Missouri Tigers. The Tide trailed only 31-30 at the half, but managed a paltry 14 second half points while giving up 37.

Florida (68) - Auburn (61) - January 18

Alligator Army Reacts

Florida survived another SEC road trip by showing up and shutting Auburn down in the waning minutes on Saturday.

College and Magnolia did not put up a post game post, so here is their game thread.

Mississippi (75) - South Carolina (74) - January 18

Red Cup Rebellion Reacts

The Rebel roundballers flirted with disaster, allowing what appeared to be a sure win with 16 seconds left come dangerously close to another classic Andy Kennedy collapse.

Garnet and Black Attack did not post a game thread or recap, mostly focusing on the Ol' Ball Coach.

Video Highlights not available.

Vanderbilt (58) - LSU (81) - January 18

Anchor of Gold is still very focused on their new football coach, but here is a link to their game thread.

And the Valley Shook Reacts

LSU shook off two weeks of demons and absolutely housed Vanderbilt in the PMAC. No messing around, no blown leads or scoring lulls, just a thoroughly dominant performance from a group that badly needed it.

SEC Standings after the week that was

Bracketology!

Joe Lunardi's latest Bracketology (as of January 16, 2014). Mizzou sits at a 9 but trending down and the loss to Vanderbilt certainly won't help.

SB Nation's Chris Dobbertean' latest bracket prediction (as of January 14, 2014). Mizzou sits at a 9 as well and trending down, that probably won't be the case once updated.

Jerry Palm of CBS' latest bracket thing (as of January 17, 2014). Mizzou sitting at an 11 and one of the last 4 in. This worked well for VCU two years ago, so why not Mizzou?

The Week that Was, who did well, who split and who had a POOR week:

Florida and Ole Miss went 2-0, Kentucky, Texas A&M, Georgia, Mizzou, Mississippi State, LSU, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Vanderbilt went 1-1 and Auburn and South Carolina went 0-2.

Looking at the week, we didn't really learn much, we had an amazing dunk finish by Arkansas which was followed up by a typical Mike Anderson road loss, Florida stayed perfect but didn't look amazing doing it, home teams feasted on road teams, Vanderbilt's floor still enrages me and Auburn and South Carolina still are winless in the SEC.

Hope you enjoyed this post, look for the next iteration Thursday morning with more original content and be sure to give us your thoughts in the Comments section. Happy Sunday all!
