almost afraid to jinx it...

...but this has been one helluva game.  NU got a masterful performance for six innings from Johnny Dorn and took a 1-run lead into the 7th before MU tied the game and drove Dorn from the game.  Now the heart of the order has put up a three-spot in the 8th, and we'll take a lead into the 9th.  How big a lead is yet to be determined, as Ryan Lollis is up with 2 outs and the bases loaded, up 4-1.

Crow has rediscovered his rhythm, I'd say.  8 innings, 7 K's, 4 hits, 3 BB's, 1 run.  I assume he'll come back out in the 9th, unless Lollis hits a grand slam here or something.

by The Boy on May 16, 2008 9:11 PM CDT   0 recs

no grand slam...

...but Crow takes the mound in the 9th with an 8-1 lead.

Senne with a 3-run double

8-1 Tigers.

Crow still out there, hit the first batter of the inning.

by UribeAuction on May 16, 2008 9:19 PM CDT   0 recs

so it was senne...

...my Gametracker's been going crazy.  It said Lollis hit an RBI single...and then suddenly we were up 8-1.

by The Boy on May 16, 2008 9:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I bit the bullet...

and just streamed the game from KTGR online. Right when I turned it on, Senne hit his double.

by UribeAuction on May 16, 2008 9:25 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Gibson coming in...

Crow had an HBP, K, and then BB.

by UribeAuction on May 16, 2008 9:26 PM CDT   0 recs

I'd have given him one more batter...

...try to lock up the complete game...but that's fine I guess.  Can't believe he's bringing in Gibson with a 7-run lead, though.  Then again, our bullpen really could be that bad.

by The Boy on May 16, 2008 9:30 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Seriously...

I wouldn't put it past Tepesch/Clark/Hicks etc. to give up seven runs...

Gibson should go Sunday and be fine, though.

Also: Strikeout, ballgame over!

by UribeAuction on May 16, 2008 9:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Woohoo!

Crow's 12-0, and Mizzou's still in 4th place.

by The Boy on May 16, 2008 9:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well...

...unless Ian Berger collapses, this will be a short one today.  After three, it's 16-2 MU...and we've got all of 4 extra-base hits.  Andrew Thigpen's 2-for-2 with a HR and 4 RBIs, Greg Folgia has 3 RBIs, Jonah Schmidt has 2 RBIs, and, pure Mizzou fashion, we've walked 7 times and been hit twice.

Meanwhile, Berger has given up 6 baserunners and 2 runs in three innings, but today that's perfectly okay...

by The Boy on May 17, 2008 3:47 PM CDT   0 recs

And yes...

...the first three innings lasted an hour, 45 minutes.  The drawbacks of Mizzou's hitting style...

by The Boy on May 17, 2008 3:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That is just crazy...

I mean...I guess we are certainly picking perhaps the right time to get hot again...but this is still pretty surprising to do it like this with these scores.

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 3:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Solo shot by NU to start the 5th

Tough call here on what to do with Berger in this game....part of me says you leave him in there for as long as you can just to minimize bullpen exposure....but...the other part of me says that there may never be a better game to expose someone to when you 10-12 or more runs...maybe get SOMEONE some confidence going towards the Big XII's next week

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 3:59 PM CDT   0 recs

Another 2 run HR and my question may get answered

for me...I guess you get him through this inning (so he can at least get the win) and then maybe think about the pen from here....NU's pen is going to get used and abused today....and I feel good about Gibson tomorrow...perhaps we see Zagone in an attempt to go 4 innings here to split this one.

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 4:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Meanwhile...

...in the #1 v #2 matchup, Miami has cut a 12-4 lead to 12-10 in the bottom of the 7th...

by The Boy on May 17, 2008 4:12 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

And now...

...you can send Berger back out if you really wanna...Greg Folgia, of all people, just hit a 3-run jack...19-5 Mizzou...

by The Boy on May 17, 2008 4:13 PM CDT   0 recs

Well..as long as we give them right back

So much for my theory that someone could get hot...as Hicks comes in and gives up the 3 run shot....19-8.  Someone needs to go for two here.

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 4:25 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

And as long as we get them back...again...sheesh

22-8 now...this one is all over the place.

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 4:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

and now...

...we answer with three more.  22-8.  I wish we'd stop scoring now...too many runs always seems to mean like a 3-2 Sunday defeat, lol.

by The Boy on May 17, 2008 4:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Two solid innings from Ryan Allen

Moving to the bottom of the 8th, 22-8....I guess you put Allen out there to finish it just to save another arm for tomorrow just in case...though I would hate for him to throw two solid inninngs and then struggle.

Anyone want to wager on Big Brown?  1:5....good lord that is insane...

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 5:10 PM CDT   0 recs

Game over at 22-9

Allen gives up one run in the 9th, and Mizzou has taken the series already from NU, keeping their hold on 4th place over Texas.  Not sure what they have done today, but if they have lost, I believe we clinch it.

I have to believe it is Gibson tomorrow to try for the nationally-impacting sweep.

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 5:31 PM CDT   0 recs

Here's an FSN Question...

Do they cut in from the Royals game for Mizzou/Nubs? I'm saying no, but FSN is the same scheduling gurus who have cut to poker (POKER!!) instead of a Royals game.

by Big Head on May 18, 2008 2:17 PM CDT   0 recs

oh wow, really?

They cut to poker over a live event?  That's bad.  Of course, it's a non-issue today, as the Royals game is over, but...yeah.  That's bad.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 3:17 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

the drawbacks of a Sunday telecast...

...I love that FSN is putting more and more Big 12 games on, but...they're mostly on Sunday, meaning at best we see #3 starter vs #3 starter.  Today, it's apparently even worse, as it appears we're saving Gibson and Zagone for the Big 12's and starting Nick Tepesch today.  Granted, this is a good opportunity for Tepesch to get some work, and Mizzou pitchers have done quite well on TV in the past, but nevertheless, this matchup won't be quite as exciting as seeing Crow vs Dorn or something.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 3:19 PM CDT   0 recs

technically, yeah...

...and technically he's available out of the pen today, but we're not starting him.

Scoreless after a half-inning...

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 3:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

ouch...

...NU dude just stole second, and Trevor Coleman pegged him in the neck with the throw.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 4:04 PM CDT   0 recs

1-0 NU...

...single up the middle, nice manufactured run for NU.  Tepesch looking okay, but he's already at 40 pitches in 1 2/3 innings...

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 4:09 PM CDT   0 recs

Ball 4...Ball 8...

...and Mizzou's got two runners on with 1 out in the 2nd.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 4:18 PM CDT   0 recs

nice...RBI single for Steve Gray...

...who's now 8-for-9 for the series.  1-1, still two on one out for Mizzou in the 2nd...

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 4:20 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Thigpen with a nice "swinging bunt"...

...otherwise known as an oops infield single.  Either way, the bases are loaded for Mach...

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 4:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Thigpen looked like he pulled something on the

big swing. Looked like a softball pitch to Babe Ruth. I felt the breeze in Omaha.

by Big Head on May 18, 2008 4:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nubs should start warming someone up. Pribanic

has NOTHING today. Double play could kill this though.

by Big Head on May 18, 2008 4:21 PM CDT   0 recs

this is a very Mizzou inning...

...walks and infield singles...either way, it's 2-1!

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 4:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

the very Mizzou inning continues...

...with the bases loaded walk.  3-1.  Senne now up with the bases loaded.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 4:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Pribanic's out...

...looks like somebody will be coming in with a couple balls already on Senne.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 4:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, lol...

...I knew I hadn't worded that very well.  But I did it anyway.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 4:38 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Anderson doesn't strike me...

...as somebody I'd enjoy being around all that much, lol.

Senne flies out...on to the 3rd.  And I'm going to disappear for a bit...

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 4:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

And we're back...

...Rick Zagone's on the mound now, and, 2:25 into the game, we're in the top of the 6th.  Back in Greg Maddox's prime, 2 hours, 25 minutes meant the game had been over for about 15 minutes, lol.

Mizzou's up 5-2, btw.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 5:55 PM CDT   0 recs

Nice...

...8,091 attended this 3-game series, a new Mizzou record.  Lovely.  With the weather, I guess there was no excuse...though obviously I found an excuse, as I somehow managed not to attend a single one of these games.  I'm such a homebody.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 5:56 PM CDT   0 recs

RBI single for NU...

...5-3 Mizzou now.  PLENTY of baseball still to be played tonight.  Thank god Taylor Stadium has lights.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 5:58 PM CDT   0 recs

Greg Folgia, lol...

...has suddenly turned into a cleanup hitter.  His third homer of the series (and fourth of the season, lol) makes the score 7-3 Mizzou.  One out in the sixth.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 6:08 PM CDT   0 recs

on to the 8th...

...both teams have brought in good pitchers, so hopefully there won't be anymore mid-inning subs...still 7-3 Mizzou...

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 6:25 PM CDT   0 recs

woah...

...Thigpen makes a nice stab of a ball hit up the middle, twirls, and fires one about 30 feet above the first baseman.  Runner on 2nd with no outs for the Huskers...

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 6:31 PM CDT   0 recs

the combination...

...of Gibson having great stuff and batters really not being able to see pitches very well at this time of day have made him look positively dominating over the last three innings.  Mizzou wins 7-3 and sweeps the #5 team in the country.  A nice 6-0 weekend for Mizzou diamond sports...
