Live Thread: Mizzou vs. Iowa in NCAA Softball

Figured I may as well get this started.  As we wait for Mizzou-Iowa to start at 1pm (Mizzou's got two chances to win once), I thought we'd take a look at the scores and brackets from the other regionals.

(Photo from mutigers.com front page.  Be sure to check out the cool photo gallery here)

Star-divide

We'll just go straight down the bracket, pointing out the Big 12 teams along the way.  In most of these regions, you'll see that one team is 2-0 and one is 2-1.  Obviously that means that the 2-1 team has to beat the 2-0 team twice to advance.

GAINESVILLE REGION

#1 Florida (2-0) is taking care of business, having given up only two runs in two games.  UCF (2-1) awaits today.  The Golden Knight...ettes have to win twice to move on.  UF beat UCF 3-0 yesterday.

FRESNO REGION

#16 Fresno State (2-1), the lowest of the seeds, slipped up yesterday to Cal (2-0).  They assured themselves another shot at the Lady Bears by eliminating San Diego State last night.

BATON ROUGE REGION

UL-Lafayette (2-0) sprung an upset yesterday, knocking off #9 LSU (2-1).  LSU eliminated ECU last night, so ULL will have to do take out the Lady Tigers one more time today to advance.

HOUSTON REGION

Texas didn't make much noise here...they lost to Washington, eliminated Delaware State, and lost to Washington again.  UW (2-1) faces #8 Houston (2-0) today.

COLLEGE STATION REGION

#5 Texas A&M (2-0) is TCB'ing in a major way, coasting through two shutouts over SFA and Louisiana Tech (2-1).  The Lady Techsters will need to figure out how to score to have a chance of advancing.

AMHERST REGION

#12 Stanford (2-0) had to go cross-country for their regional, but jet lag is making no impact.  They'll face host UMass (2-1) again today after defeating them 3-0 yesterday.

KNOXVILLE REGION

Virginia Tech (2-0) beat #13 Tennessee (2-1) 4-0 on a grand slam yesterday, and they'll have to knock off the home team one more time today to advance.

ANN ARBOR REGION

#4 Michigan's (2-0) offense has been pumping along, scoring 21 runs in two games.  They'll face Kent State (2-1), who upset (I guess) Notre Dame yesterday.

TUSCALOOSA REGION

#3 Alabama has already advanced.  Their region started on Thursday, and they quickly plowed through Chattanooga and Jacksonville State (twice).

IOWA CITY REGION

We know all about this one.  Mizzou (2-0) has a golden opportunity in front of them.  They beat #14 LBSU yesterday, and then the Lady Dirt Bags got eliminated by host Iowa (2-1) last night.  Granted, Iowa will have a home field advantage, but Mizzou just needs to split to advance today.

EVANSTON REGION

#11 Northwestern (2-0) has outscored Western Illinois and DePaul 12-0 so far, and they need to just beat DePaul (2-1) one more time today.

TEMPE REGION

#6 Arizona State (2-0) has also had little trouble this weekend, outscoring Stony Brook and Hawaii 12-0.  They face Hawaii (2-1) again today.

HEMPSTEAD REGION

So uhh...I'm not sure how or why #7 Arizona isn't hosting this region.  Instead, it's Hofstra...which is awesome.  And apparently Arizona (2-0) has taken this slight personally--they beat Canisius 11-0 and Hofstra 10-0 yesterday.  Friday games were postponed, I assume due to rain, so they're a little behind.  Canisius (1-1) and Hofstra (1-1) are playing right now (Hofstra leads 5-1 in the 7th) for the right to get pounded again by Arizona.

NORMAN REGION

#10 Oklahoma (2-0) sits in good shape after slipping by Arkansas 6-5 yesterday.  Arkansas was eliminated by Oregon (2-1) last night, leaving OU with a chance to avenge that football screwjob of 2006 by pounding the Lady Ducks today.

CHAPEL HILL REGION

This region also started on Thursday.  #15 Georgia was sent to Chapel Hill, but the host Lady Tar Heels crapped themselves, losing to BYU and Campbell and bowing out quickly.  That left Georgia to coast through easy wins over Campbell and BYU (twice).

LOS ANGELES REGION

Wins over CS-Fullerton (score: 8-3) and Nevada (6-4) have left #2 UCLA in good position to advance, needing only a second win over Nevada, who put up a pretty decent fight yesterday.

--

So...if all the 2-0 teams advance (they won't), we'll be looking at the following Super Regional matchups...

#1 Florida vs California
#8 Houston vs UL-Lafayette
#5 Texas A&M vs #12 Stanford
#4 Michigan vs Virginia Tech
#6 Arizona State vs #11 Northwestern
#3 Alabama vs Missouri
#7 Arizona vs #10 Oklahoma
#2 UCLA vs #15 Georgia

Missouri is one of four unseeded teams to sit at 2-0 at the moment, and 3 of the 4 qualifying teams from the Big 12 are in a decent position to advance.  So there you go.  Mizzou-Iowa starts at 1pm.

The Beef is at Cards-Rays today...

...so I realize this thread will be mostly me...

Top 1

Iowa got a runner on via a Lindsey Ubrun fielding error, but that was it...Stacy Delany's looking good after one.

Pitching today for Iowa is Brittany Weil, who is somehow only 28-14 despite a 1.17 ERA.  Not really sure how that works.  Weil went the distance against MU Friday night, giving up 3 runs (including the walk-off HR in the 8th).  She also went 8 innings against Creighton (0 ER's) and 7 against LBSU (2 ER's).  In other words, she's the only Hawkeye who's pitched this weekend.  Surely that means she's close to running out of gas.

Iowa's only score more than 5 runs 16 times this year...which really isn't very much.  Chances are this one will be in the 3-2 range.

And now that I said that, we'll lose 12-10.

Bottom 1...

...Rhea Taylor leads off with a patented infield single.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 1:19 PM CDT   0 recs

...and then steals second.

Also patented.  One out, Taylor on 2nd.

Amanda Renth walks...

...two on, one out for Friday night hero Lindsey Ubrun.

Ubrun walks...

...big early opportunity for Mizzou.  Bases loaded, one out for Andee Allen.

Allen with an RBI infield single...

...1-0, bases loaded with two outs now after a foul-out by Jen Bruck.

E5...

...two unearned runs score on an error by Iowa's 3B.  It's now 3-0 Mizzou!  Catcher Katie Milles and her .096 average are now up.  Nice first inning for Mizzou.

Top 2...

...Iowa strikes back with an RBI double.  3-1 now.  Runner on 2nd with 2 outs as the bottom of Iowa's order produces a run.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 1:35 PM CDT   0 recs

Bottom 2...

...Mizzou goes 1-2-3 in the 2nd, the biggest surprise being that Rhea Taylor hit a ball on the ground and didn't beat out the throw.  3-1 Mizzou heading to the third...

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 1:44 PM CDT   0 recs

Am headed outside for a bit...

...so updates will be sporadic for a little while.

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 1:44 PM CDT   0 recs

well...THIS sucks...

...I get back inside, and Iowa has just scored 3 in the 7th to take a 4-3 lead.  Mizzou's now up to bat in the bottom of the 7th...

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 2:54 PM CDT   0 recs

Good start to the bottom of the 7th...

...Meredith Nash and Rhea Taylor reach base to start the inning, both steal bases, and we just tied the game on a sac fly.  Renth walked, so now Ubrun's up with the winning run on third.  Can she be the hero again?

by The Boy on May 18, 2008 2:58 PM CDT   0 recs

nope...

...Ubrun is also intentionally walked, so now the bases are loaded for Andee Allen.  Smart move, actually.  You want anybody but Renth or Ubrun to be the hero if you're playing Mizzou.

BALLGAME!

Andee Allen gets her second RBI of the day, Taylor scores from 3rd, and Mizzou moves on to the Super Regional, 5-4!!
