Top 10 Moments: No. 1 - The Sack

Before we dive headfirst into basketball season, I've compiled a list of the Top 10 moments from a Mizzou football season chocked full of them. Each day, I'll unveil another moment until we culminate with the single most memorable moment from the 2007 season.

1. The Sack

-- Surprise, surprise, right?  In my eyes, it was the single most memorable moment of Mizzou's single most memorable season. All game, No. 4 ranked Mizzou had dominated No. 2 ranked Kansas with everything on the line - a Border War win, a Big 12 North title, and the right to be ranked No. 1 in the country (however brief it may have been). Down six and trapped near their own endzone, the Jayhawks dropped back to pass only to find a swarm of Mizzou D-lineman closing in. As Todd Reesing came up with a helmet-full of sod and shame, my dad and I watching at home went for the handshake (Mizzou offense style) but ended up in a big bear hug, with him looking me in the eye and telling me "You have the No. 1 football team in the country." There were other memorable moments this year with perhaps greater athletic achievements, but no other moment meant as much to as many other people. Nearly every Mizzou fan will remember where they where, who they were with and what they did in November 2007 when "The Sack" cemented Missouri's magical season.

THE LIST

  1. The Punt Return
  1. The Hurdle
  1. The Kick Return
  1. The Plunge
  1. The Fumble Return
  1. The Record
  1. The Scramble
  1. The Hit
  1. The Interception
  1. The Sack

THE DISCUSSION
-- Just because the list has ended doesn't mean the discussion is over. Have any issues with something I missed or the order I put them in? Respond in your own personal diary on the right side of the page. I limited my list to moments on the field, but were there any off-the-field moments worthy of consideration? Let the debate begin....

Not really in the game, but..

At the beginning of the Cotton Bowl, when Mizzou ran out of the tunnel, my mom texted me: "I got a little misty." To me, it was great for them to be there, but I wanted them to win, and win in a dominating fashion. They did just that. So my favorite moment, the one that did make me cry, was after the game, when the Tigers were presented with the trophy and Gary Pinkel yelled "HOW BOUT THEM TIGERS!" to the large crowd of Missouri fans.

Just found this video

And if you can stand another Any Given Sunday cover, it's a beautiful thing:

great list, but...

how can "the other interception" not make the list. William Moore ripped Kansas' heart out with that goal line pick. It really set the stage for the victory that "the sack" sealed.

The Tank

I think one of the most memorable moments of the season for me was on the last drive of the first OU game.
We were down 41-24 with no hope of winning and the final seconds ticking down, and Martin Rucker caught a screen pass at the 5 yard line right in front of Chris Lofton.  I was at this game, and said out loud as he caught it "he'll never make it, and what a waste....   "

And then he wouldn't be refused, dragging Lofton and three other tacklers to the goal line.

To me this play epitomized this Mizzou team and sent a message that said "We may have lost a battle, but we're fighting a war"  Unlike former Tigers, there was no quit in this team.  After seeing the way that they handled that loss, I knew there were big things in store for this team.

If you have multiple losses you are not the best football team in the country. Period.

My most memorable moment

was the fake FG vs Nebraska. It was like a "yea f-u and not only are we beating you on national tv, we're supposed to because we're better and you can't do anything about it - so just take this pounding"

Sulak's pick vs ATM set the tone...

One of the top 10. Also, Willy Mo's off Freeman at the beginning of the K-Sucks game.

Joe Buck obviously went to the Brent Musberger...

School of announcing. I had never heard the call of this play before, but my god...yeah, you're supposed to be neutral, but you aren't supposed to be boring. How Musberger (and Buck, for that matter) are regarded as good announcers today is beyond me. I'd much rather have heard Mike Patrick really capture the moment (albeit, after a 3-minute rant about what some celebrity is doing wrong with her life) with an enthusiastic call.

And, yes, I realized this happened two months ago and I'm just ranting about it now. It just kills me to see announcing that uninspired.

Two words:

Ron. Franklin.

Musberger is lame. Put Franklin and Herbie together.
