Will home court advantage and the looming specter of New Orleans bring the Tigers through?
The Mizzou to the SEC series continues with our look at LSU and all their other sports not coached by Les Miles.
Nobody could ever doubt that the Tennessee Lady Vols had talent this year, despite some bumps in the road during the season. But it looks like they're starting to come together as a team.
So despite the ranking disparity, it's almost hard to call the Tigers' 72-61 win an upset - the Tigers were exactly who Wildcats fans thought they were. And as Glenn Logan of A Sea Of Blue described, it simply overwhelmed the Wildcats.
Sunday's contest kicked off a stretch of three games in four days for LSU athletic teams against the Crimson Tide. The two teams clash in the BCS National Championship Game on Monday in New Orleans, while the LSU men's basketball team travels to Tuscaloosa for an SEC game on Wednesday. Head coach Nikki Caldwell talked about how she has used the football team's success as an example for her team.
"We talk about the difference between being hungry and starving, and I know Coach Miles' team is starving to get on that field and win a championship," said Caldwell. "They all are in sync and they have that togetherness that you need even when adversity hits. You never see LSU football team waver. We pay close attention to some of the things that they have been able to do this whole season."
Some wins really are better than other wins. Beating Connecticut in the NCAA Women's Basketball championship is a lot better than beating Bluebell Girls Academy in an exhibition game. But the question is then "which wins are better than which other wins?"
After losing three of their last six games this season, the Trojans missed out on a 2011 NCAA Tournament bid, but Cooper had a change of heart about accepting a WNIT bid this season saying that there's value to post-season play.
After the game, UCLA Coach Nikki Caldwell said the Bruins' inability to consistently make layups has been hurting them all season, but added, "We've been able to do enough on the defensive end to masquarade it."
However, UCLA couldn't mask its weaknesses against Louisiana State, and Caldwell says she is prepared to take the necessary steps to move the team in the right direction.
