Mizzou-Colorado: Statistical Workmanlike Effort

Fouls: Mizzou 26, Colorado 15.  Just thought I'd throw that out there before I got to the rest of the analysis.

  • I think another whistle just blew!
  • Credit to Colorado for handling the ball relatively well, keeping the turnover total under 20 and actually managing more thefts than Mizzou.  Mizzou's passing still won them the BCI battle, but they were far below their average, and CU had a lot to do with that.
  • (Well, that and open shots not falling.)
  • (And ridiculous whistles and subsequent foul trouble.)
  • (But I'm not still bitter.)
  • Yeah, if you're Colorado, and the refs are calling 26 fouls on your opponent (and you're therefore probably shooting a decent number of FTs), and you're handling the ball in a reasonably effective manner, you really should be averaging more than 0.83 points per possession.
  • Absolutely outstanding work on the defensive glass by Mizzou today.  As I mentioned yesterday, CU is solid with defensive boards and poor on the offensive glass.  That was exactly what we saw today, but it was still nice that Mizzou (led mostly by Good Leo), was able to prevent them from ever getting any momentum-building putbacks.
  • And just in case you thought I didn't notice...Mizzou did indeed shoot 92% from the free throw line today.  And missed free throws actually cost their opponent.
  • And another whistle!

* AdjGS = a take-off of the Game Score metric (definition here) accepted by a lot of basketball stat nerds.  It does the same thing my previous measure of choice did (it takes points, assists, rebounds (offensive & defensive), steals, blocks, turnovers and fouls into account to determine an individual's "score" for a given game), only the formula is more used and accepted.  The "adjustment" in Adjusted Game Score is simply matching the total game scores to the total points scored in the game, thereby redistributing the game's points scored to those who had the biggest impact on the game itself, instead of just how many balls a player put through a basket.

  • Good Leo, thanks for making the trip.  With the whistles blowing, we needed you today.
  • I think it's safe to say that Laurence Bowers has overtaken Justin Safford in the rotation.  Call me crazy.  Seriously, the dude does more in less time than almost anybody else on the team.  I don't know if he can be a true "go-to" offensive threat next year, but you can go a loooooong way with a guy like Bowers in the lineup.
  • Nice game from Marcus Denmon, who needed to have a good game with the foul trouble his teammates were experiencing.
  • Zaire Taylor's kryptonite: unexpected pressure.  He's like Jimmy McKinney in the way that he can be surprised into turning the ball over at least once a game.  Of course, when he has 7 assists, he can afford a turnover or two.
  • Hustle & Flow: 9 points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover.  Nice.
  • Poor Miguel Paul can't catch a break right now.  When he does something alright, something bad happens.  When he screws up, something bad happens.  Shots are rimming out, he's getting called for phantom fouls...
  • For the season, Steve Moore has 18 fouls in 77 minutes.  Your reaction is probably the same as mine: that's it?

Rachel Phelps Update: As mentioned elsewhere...it's over!  Rachel Phelps is naked!  But just for grins...let's show the video one more time...
