The Trib (Dave Matter): Justin Smith makes first Pro Bowl
Smith might never live up to the superstar status assigned to a top-five pick, but he's been a durable, impact player throughout his career. He's started every game since his rookie season in Cincinnati, where he played his first seven years in the NFL. He's racked up 408 tackles in his career, including 56.5 sacks, which ranks 24th among active players.
He's the first player to finish his college career at Missouri to make a Pro Bowl since Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Jeff Cross was a Pro Bowler in 1990. Tight end Byron Chamberlain was a Pro Bowler for Minnesota in 2001, but he finished his college career at Wayne State.
For my money, Smith is still the best defensive player to wear the black and gold since I've been covering the Tigers - not a huge stretch considering he was the best player on the team the day he stepped on the field as a freshman back in 1998. He constantly commanded double and triple teams in his three seasons at MU and had the luxury of playing with only one teammate who became an NFL draft pick, D-tackle Jeff Marriott, a fifth-round pick in 2000.
