The Trib: TAKE TWO: An alternative look at the day in sports
Yesterday was supposed to be a memorable day for a former Missouri quarterback. It was, just not necessarily for the one we thought.
Having secured the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoff bracket, New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton sat quarterback Drew Brees for yesterday’s regular-season finale at Carolina and handed the offense over to decrepit Mark Brunell. Payton also activated rookie — and former Tiger — Chase Daniel from the practice squad to serve as Brunell’s backup. Brunell, who’s so old that Gary Pinkel coached him at the University of Washington when Daniel was still in diapers, was playing in his 163rd NFL game. Surely in a game Payton had already surrendered by sitting Brees he’d manage to give his undrafted rookie his first NFL regular-season snap. Not so. Brunell stumbled through all four quarters in the 23-10 loss as Daniel waited patiently on the sideline for the call that never came.
Daniel told me late last night via text message he was hoping to enter the game in the second half, but Payton stuck with Brunell after he led a touchdown drive to finish the third quarter. The Saints coaches, though, told Daniel they loved his preparation during the week after Payton promoted him to the active roster.

What Coulda Been
With a slow links day, I thought it would be a pretty interesting time to look into other basketball players Mizzou recruited last year (plus one who transferred from Mizzou) to see if we missed out on anybody in particular. Curious? Masochistic? You make the call.
