The Trib (Dave Matter): Emptying the Notebook
Always savor a shutout. Because they’re rare in the Big 12. There was one last season: Oklahoma 27, Oklahoma State 0. One in 2008: Missouri 58, Colorado 0. None in 2007. None in 2006. That means over the course of the last five seasons, there have been 201 Big 12 conference games — 205 if you count championship games — but just three shutouts. And Missouri has two of them.
...The easiest time to appreciate a well-coached team is when it plays one that isn’t. As well as Missouri’s defense played, the Buffs put bullet holes in their cleats all night with careless penalties in clutch situations. After crossing into MU territory on the first possession of the second half, the Buffs drew penalties on three of five plays, including a false start by right tackle David Bakhtiari on a fourth-and-5 conversion attempt.
Pinkel’s team was piling up penalties during September — MU had just two Saturday — but more than one-third were personal fouls, the kind of subjective calls that toe the line between aggressive and illegal. Rarely, though, do the Tigers pick up flags for procedural mistakes, illegal formations, false starts, holding, etc. In fact, the Tigers have run 350 plays from scrimmage this season and been called for offensive holding just once. That’s outstanding.
