  [Wes Kemp] said beating his preseason slump was partly about concentrating on the basics of running routes to get open and catching the football when it was thrown his way. But it was also about forgiving himself.

  "I was putting too much pressure on myself," Kemp said. "I was really hard on myself. And that kept on, day after day. Finally, when I stopped, I just took a deep breath. You clear your head and say: ‘It’s just practice.’ "

  The inevitability of adversity is part of a promise Pinkel makes to every recruit.

  "I’ll be there not when you’re all-conference," Pinkel says. "I’ll be there with you when you might want to quit, or things aren’t going well and you got moved down. All the things that you go through."

  Still, the ultimate solution comes largely from within, according to Kemp.

  "You’ve got to cling to adversity and hardships when they come," Kemp said, "and embrace them.

  "I don’t think anybody’s successful unless you’ve been put in an adverse situation."
