The Trib (Dave Matter): Emptying the Notebook

James Franklin just can't get away from Chase Daniel and Blaine Gabbert. The two former quarterbacks were literally looming over Franklin's shoulder Saturday on Faurot Field as the video board featured taped messages from the two NFL QBs recorded a few weeks ago. On the field, Franklin is beginning to gain the same kind of respect his two predecessors earned while piloting the Tigers' spread offense. And it starts with making gutsy throws like his 39-yard touchdown to Michael Egnew, a downfield dart through heavy traffic.

"That was almost a perfect pass," Egnew said. "Perfect spiral, an easy catch. All I had to do was run. … There were a couple" defenders "who were close, but that's what was good with Gabbert and Daniel. They were confident in their arm. And I can see that in James right there. He was confident in this throw. That's what I like to see."

He still makes curious decisions with the ball, like his back-to-back interceptions into coverage in the second quarter. After that, though, Franklin completed his next 10 passes.

That was Columbia, Missouri 2008 – a significant fork in the road leading to the Cowboys' current stout status at No. 4 in the BCS Standings. OSU hadn't yet won any landmark games, especially on the road, yet shocked the No. 3 Tigers 28-23 that night on national TV to punctuate a 6-0 season start and elevate its football brand.

In retrospect, that breakthrough signaled OSU's rise as much as any as a signature win delivering believability not only across the country, but inside the Cowboys locker room. Fast forwarding back to today, the Pokes' spurs are well-earned and shiny, polished on victories claimed at once-dreaded locales like Austin and College Station and Lubbock; victories built on a tough win at Mizzou, where they pulled off clutch plays on offense and defense.

"Yeah, I think it was the starting point for us," said Weeden, a deep reserve on that team. "It just gradually went from there."
