There's a Mike Anderson post coming up soon enough, so ... how about we focus on everything in the Mizzou universe that DOESN'T involve Mike Anderson for a little while?

  • The Trib (Dave Matter): Defense claims first spring scrimmage

On the first play of a starters-vs.-starter series, Franklin didn't see Gooden flashing across the field in coverage and threw the ball right at the outside linebacker. Gooden cruised into the end zone on a 40-yard return. "Pre-snap, I was throwing to the left," Franklin said. "He was right of the center, and I know Zaviar's fast, but when I was going for the snap, I put my head down. When I brought it up, I saw the slant there. But what I didn't see was him coming across the field. That one was on me."

On the next series, Madison whipped past left tackle Jack Meiners and seemed to have Franklin knocked unbalanced while he was scanning his reads downfield. Franklin got spun around and wildly threw downfield for L'Damian Washington, nearly getting picked again as Kenji Jackson swarmed Washington and the ball. A play later, Franklin underthrew his target and hit Jackson in the feet. Franklin admitted later he wasn't doing a great job of flushing his mistakes before taking the next snap.

Redshirt freshman cornerback Xavier Smith is turning some heads the last few days. On a bubble screen from Glaser to Sasser, Smith easily shed a block by Jaleel Clark and dropped Sasser near the line of scrimmage. A few plays later, another backup in the secondary, walk-on Randy Ponder, smoked Eric Waters in the open field, leaving the tight end shaky getting up.

L'Damian Washington and Rolandis Woodland really stood out at receiver. Washington finished with four catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns, and Woodland caught four for 60. Woodland showed his potential to be dynamic with the ball in his hands, as he juked defenders on two long catch-and-runs. Bud Sasser led the receivers with six catches, but never got the ball with room to work, finishing with 27 yards.

PLAY OF THE DAY: During the two-minute drill (Really, a one-minute, 30-second drill), Gabbert threw off his back foot about thirty yards downfield to Washington on the sideline. Washington caught the ball, made a cut towards the hash to juke Daniel Easterly, and coasted the rest of the way to a 64-yard touchdown. For most of the day, Tyler Gabbert looked more like Chase Daniel, completing passes underneath and keeping the chains moving with his accuracy. That play, however, was a Blaine-type moment.
