The Trib: Chelsea Thomas is the gift that keeps giving

It was the week before the 2007 Big 12 Tournament, and, as a rule, the Missouri softball coach does not scout or watch high school games during the season. Earleywine was not about to blow off practice to drive eight hours round-trip to see a lightly recruited pitcher he knew about only from a grainy video her father had sent him.

"Outlandish for me to even think about it," he said.

Yet the prospect’s family insisted, and there was something about that video — the way it sounded like the firing of a double-barreled shotgun each time the ball thumped into the catcher’s mitt — that piqued his curiosity.

He had to see Chelsea Thomas.

After watching her pitch, Earleywine called his coaches. Pete D’Amour was inching through the drive-thru line at Hardee’s when the number of the boss flashed on his phone.

"Our lives are about to change," Earleywine told his pitching coach, who was then a manager.

This might not even be the best passage. I couldn't decide between this one, the one where Earleywine predicts at least one national title before her eligibility ends, or the one where he worked her out in her hometown and thought his radar gun was broken because she was throwing too fast.  Great, great article. Read it all.
