    9. Slive absolutely has to suspend backup Alabama defensive lineman LaMichael Fanning: Late in the fourth quarter he pulverized tailback Russell Hansbrough with a belly-to-back suplex, earning a 15-yard personal foul. The officials threw the flag, then let the Tigers' offensive linemen get away with some vengeance on the next couple snaps. Guard Evan Boehm and center Brad McNulty double-teamed and drove Fanning to the turf on the next play, then guard Max Copeland took him down and appeared to whack off his helmet after the whistle. I'd be stunned if Fanning doesn't draw a one-game benching from the commissioner.

    10. Pinkel said this Alabama team might be the best team he's ever seen. That would make sense to say shortly after they clobbered his Tigers, but maybe he's right. There doesn't appear to be any weaknesses on this team. AJ McCarron could throw for 350 yards a week if they asked that of him. Lacy looked every bit as dominant as Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson were at their peaks in college. The offensive line moved bodies at will. The defensive front got pressure without having to blitz. Linebacker C.J. Mosley deserves to be mentioned with Georgia's Jarvis Jones and South Carolina's Jadeveon Clowney for SEC defensive player of the year. And the secondary has a deep cast of playmakers. From my perch in the press box and on the couch, I'd still rank Miami's 2001 team as the best of the BCS era, followed by, in no particular order, 2005 Texas, 2003 Oklahoma (which lost the Big 12 title game to Kansas State) and the Leinart-Bush USC teams of 2004-05.
