The Jim Chaney rumbles are increasing, former Tigers light up the NFL again, NFL.com is the worst website in the history of civilization, Mizzou Hoops still beat Tennessee State, and the Mizzou women can shoot the 3.

First things first: We got word on Saturday that Steve Walentik, the Trib's Mizzou hoops beat writer, lost his mother recently. Deep condolences to the Walentik family. Keep Steve in your thoughts.

So the rumbling is growing a little louder regarding Jim Chaney and Mizzou's vacant offensive coordinator spot. There are still a lot of hurdles to clear in this regard, but this would be a pretty impressive hire. Of course, Matt Painter would have been, too, and things worked out okay without him. So we'll see.

Meanwhile, Mizzou indeed scored two football commitments this weekend, and a third player (Illinois lineman Josh Augusta) left Columbia with Mizzou still as his favorite (he's visiting Illinois next weekend, then deciding). More linemen come to town next weekend. Like I said, Mizzou's making its late recruiting priorities pretty clearly known.

The Trib (Dave Matter): Chaney makes sense for MU, but who is he?

Before we get to Chaney, one point about Missouri's staff situation. At this point, Pinkel needs a quarterbacks coach. In this case, I think coaching and developing QBs are more specialized skills than calling plays. The staff needs someone who can develop Maty Mauk and the incoming freshmen and, perhaps in the short term, someone who can work with James Franklin and salvage his senior year. Co-offensive line coach Josh Henson has teamed with former coordinator David Yost in play-calling duties for the last four years. Receivers coach Andy Hill has nearly two decades of coaching experience. I've talked with both in-house candidates enough over the last few years to be convinced they have fresh ideas about the direction of the offense. But as the staff stands now, only one coach has ever been a full-time Division I quarterbacks coach at any time during his career: Pinkel. And he's not going back to that role.

If the Tigers go with Chaney — and it won't be cheap — that means Pinkel probably has to (1) make room on the staff for a quarterbacks coach and (2) find a quarterbacks coach. Otherwise, he could make an in-house promotion for the coordinator job and look around for someone to coach QBs. […]

Before Tennessee and before a three-year run as the St. Louis Rams offensive line coach, Chaney made his mark at Purdue where he was Joe Tiller's offensive coordinator from 1997-2005. He also served as recruiting coordinator and coached the tight ends. The Boilermakers had one of the country's most explosive offenses during Chaney's time there, and the Tiller-Chaney one-back spread attack is considered one of the forbearers for the modern spread. Actually, Tiller adopted the offense after succeeding Dennis Erickson at Wyoming in 1987. Chaney was on the Wyoming staff, too. In 1997, Tiller and Chaney headed to Purdue where they brought the one-back spread to the Big Ten and built one of the most prolific passing offenses in league history with a quarterback named Drew Brees. The Boilermakers finished 9-3 in their debut season under Tiller and Chaney but had to recover from a loss in their Purdue debut — to Pinkel's Toledo Rockets.

When Kiffin hired Chaney away from the Rams in 2008, Chaney ran the pro-style offense that Kiffin employed as an assistant at USC and with the Oakland Raiders. Over the last three years, Chaney made the Tennessee offense his own but kept many of the same elements of the pro-style scheme: Tennessee's quarterbacks took snaps from under center and in the shotgun; multiple backs lined up in the backfield; tight ends were attached to the line and flexed wide.

Ugh. So I went to NFL.com to grab some links to some of Mizzou's many fantastic plays from this past weekend -- Danario's two incredible touchdowns, another Aldon Smith sack, Jeremy Maclin's game-winning touchdown -- and I got stuck in an ad loop. Upon watching my fourth 30-second ad in pursuing Danario's first touchdown, I gave up. You are absolutely, positively ridiculous, NFL.com. I give up. And instead, we'll just say that a lot of former Mizzou football players did their own variation of this gif.

Just watch that like 8-10 times and pretend it's Danario and Maclin. Or watch these gifs from other sources. And then watch this and say "SPOOOOOOOOOOON" for a while.
