The Trib (Dave Matter): Are Tigers getting a ready-made D-tackle?

Thompson has been around the Maplewood program for years and served as a waterboy while in elementary school when his older brother played for Gregory. By the time Thompson was a sophomore, Gregory knew he had a Division I player on his hands. (Gregory starred at Parkway Central in 1990s, spent two seasons at Hutchnison, Kan., Community College and played cornerback for Rocky Long at New Mexico.) But he wasn’t sure where Thompson hoped to play until MU assistant coach Cornell Ford visited Maplewood.

"He’s a quiet kid, but he’s a little intimidating because he’s the biggest kid around," said Gregory, who compared Thompson’s shy demeanor to that of NFL offensive lineman Michael Oher, of "The Blind Side" fame. "A lot of schools come in here and want to talk to him, but when I introduced him to Coach Ford, he automatically started smiling. I told Coach Ford, ‘I don’t know what you just said to him but he don’t usually smile like that. He’s usually laid back and quiet.’ Come to find out, Mizzou has been his dream school and he’s always wanted to go there. But he’s so quiet and laid back we didn’t know that."

I had far too much fun with this piece, and it took up far too much of my day yesterday.

So I can't imagine Mizzou has much of a shot at the NCAA Tournament -- maybe if they'd taken the series versus Tech and maybe split with Arkansas, things would be different -- but it's nice that they're just close enough to still have something to play for down the stretch. Win your remaining series, show well at the Big 12 Tournament, and let's see what happens.

    • MU is no longer listed on the BoydsWorld.com RPI Needs Report, which indicates he no longer considers Mizzou to have a statistical chance of earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
    • On the other hand, Boyd's RPI Needs Report only takes into account the remaining regular season games. If MU were to finish their final seven games strong and then ride momentum deep into the Big 12 Tournament, that could get them into "bubble" status for the final at-large slots in the bracket.
