Mizzou Moves To The SEC: Mississippi State's Other Sports Are Not Great

Another week, another SEC future foe meets our bullets to see what we might be up against. Today, the Mississippi State Bulldogs get run through. As always, we will review the last three years of records for each of the sports which Mizzou will be bringing to the SEC starting in July, as well as bump it up against what Mizzou did in the same sports (in both bold and italics for your viewing pleasure). Let's get to it, starting with the fall sports (season listed is year in which the sport completed so fall sports will be a calendar year behind):

Overall Learfield Cup Standings: 2009-10 (49th) - 114th, 2010-11 (41st) - 79th, 2011-12 (50th) - 84th (through 6/14 release)

Women's Soccer:

  • 2009 (13-6-3/7-1-2, B12 Regular Season Champs (1st) - 9-7-2 overall, 1-7-2 in SEC (yep...loaded up the non-con there)
  • 2010 (7-10-2/5-5) - 8-12 overall, 1-10 in SEC
  • 2011 (12-8-1/3-5-0) - 6-10-3 overall, 3-7-1 in SEC

Women's Cross Country:

  • 2009 (7th in B12, 7th in NCAA Midwest Regional) - 10th in SEC, 13th in NCAA Regional Championships
  • 2010 (11th in B12, 12th in NCAA Midwest Regional) - 5th in SEC, 5th in NCAA Regional Championships
  • 2011 (4th in B12, 7th in NCAA Midwest Regional) - 8th in SEC, 8th in NCAA Regional Championships

Men's Cross Country:

  • 2009 (T-8th in B12, 11th in NCAA Midwest Regional) - 8th in SEC, 9th in NCAA Regional Championships
  • 2010 (11th in B12, 18th in NCAA Midwest Regional) - 7th in SEC, 10th in NCAA Regional Championships
  • 2011 (6th in B12, 7th in NCAA Midwest Regional) - 8th in SEC, 11th in NCAA Regional Championships

Women's Volleyball:

  • 2009 (18-14 overall, 9-11 in B12) - 9-22 overall, 5-15 in SEC
  • 2010 (22-11 overall, 12-8 in B12, eliminated in NCAA Sweet 16) - 11-20 overall, 3-17 in SEC
  • 2011 (21-13 overall, 7-9 in B12, eliminated in NCAA 1st round) - 12-17 overall, 7-13 in SEC

Women's Indoor Track:

  • 2010 (10th in B12) - 11th in SEC
  • 2011 (12th in B12) - 12th in SEC
  • 2012 (10th in B12) - 7th in SEC

Men's Indoor Track:

  • 2010 (9th in B12, 25th in NCAA Championships) - Did not score at SEC Championships,
  • 2011 (9th in B12, t-26th in NCAA Championships) - Did not score at SEC Championships, t-57th at NCAA Championships
  • 2012 (8th in B12, t-61st in NCAA Championships) - Did not score at SEC Championships, 21st at NCAA Championships (It honestly appears as if they do not compete at the SEC Championships, though they are on the books as having done so as recently as 2003...very strange)

Women's Gymnastics: (no team)

Women's Basketball:

  • 2010 (12-18 overall, 2-14 in B12) - 21-13 overall (best season in school history), 9-7 in SEC, lost in Sweet 16 of NCAA Tournament
  • 2011 (13-18 overall, 5-11 in B12) - 13-17 overall, 4-12 in SEC
  • 2012 (13-18 overall, 2-14 in B12) - 14-16 overall, 4-12 in SEC

Women's Swimming and Diving: (no team)

Men's Swimming and Diving: (no team)

Women's Outdoor Track:

  • 2010 (10th in B12) - Did not score in SEC, t-41st in NCAA Championships
  • 2011 (11th in B12) - 10th in SEC
  • 2012 (7th, t-60th in NCAA Championships) - 10th in SEC

Men's Outdoor Track:

  • 2010 (10th in B12, t-21st in NCAA Championships) - 7th in SEC, t-17th in NCAA Championships
  • 2011 (9th in B12, t-41st in NCAA Championships) - 9th in SEC, t-20th in NCAA Championships
  • 2012 (10th, t-56th in NCAA Championships) - 5th in SEC, t-43rd in NCAA Championships

Women's Tennis:

  • 2010 (6-17 overall, 1-10 in B12) - 9-13 overall, 1-11 in SEC
  • 2011 (11-9 overall, 4-6 in B12) - 2-16 overall, 0-11 in SEC
  • 2012 (11-12 overall, 2-7 in B12, ranked #47 at last match) - 7-14 overall, 1-11 in SEC

Women's Golf:

  • 2010 (7th in B12) - 12th in SEC
  • 2011 (3rd in B12) - 12th in SEC
  • 2012 (9th in B12) - 12th in SEC

Men's Golf:

  • 2010 (11th in B12, 10th in NCAA Regionals) - 11th in SEC
  • 2011 (5th in B12, 6th in NCAA Regionals) - 11th in SEC
  • 2012 (8th in B12) - 12th in SEC

Softball:

  • 2010 (51-13 overall, 11-7 in B12, eliminated in WCWS) - 26-29 overall, 7-20 in SEC
  • 2011 (53-10 overall, 13-2 in B12, B12 Regular Season Champions (1st), eliminated in WCWS) - 24-32 overall, 10-18 in SEC (former Mizzou coach Jay Miller does not get his contract renewed after season)
  • 2012 (47-14 overall, 17-7 in B12, eliminated in NCAA Super Regionals) - 33-24 overall, 12-16 in SEC, eliminated in NCAA Regionals

Baseball:

  • 2010 (29-26 overall, 10-16 in B12) - 23-33 overall, 6-24 in SEC
  • 2011 (27-32 overall, 12-15 in B12) - 38-25 overall, 14-16 in SEC, Eliminated in NCAA Super Regionals
  • 2012 (32-28 overall, 9-14 in B12, B12 Tournament Champions (first), eliminated in NCAA Regionals) - 39-22 overall, 16-14 in SEC, SEC Tournament Champions (7th title), lost in NCAA Regionals

Summary:

Well, every conference has to have some outfits like this one. Not everyone can win I guess. MSU appears to have some solid history with their baseball program, and I do know Jay Miller got MSU to some NCAA's before falling off and not being renewed. Beyond that though, not much else to say. I wish I could figure out how the track thing works, and yikes for golf is all I can say there. But I also believe they have some decent expansion going on (at least on the football side, if not all sports), so perhaps they are starting to trend upwards.
