Mizzou Moves to the SEC: Florida's All-Sports Are ... Um ... Wow

To this point, we have looked at some very strong programs (Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Arkansas). Each of these have been top-25 caliber departments as it pertains to the Learfield Cup standings. Well, get ready to meet our new Learfield overlords ... the Florida Gators.

As always, we will review the last three years of records for each of the sports which Mizzou will be bringing to the SEC starting in July, along with the Mizzou results over the same time span (in bold and italics). Let's get to it, starting with the fall sports (season listed is year in which the sport completed so fall sports will be a calendar year behind):

Overall Learfield Cup Standings: 2009-10 (49th) - 2nd , 2010-11 (41st) - 4th , 2011-12 (49th) - 2nd (folks...Stanford has won 18 straight Learfield Cups and will win their 19th this year (the field is not exactly equal in some ways). Florida coming in 2nd is damn impressive.

Women's Soccer:

  • 2009 (13-6-3/7-1-2, B12 Regular Season Champs (1st) - 16-6-2 overall, 8-1-2 in SEC (SEC Champions), eliminated in 2nd round of NCAA Tournament
  • 2010 (7-10-2/5-5) - 19-3-2 overall, 9-1-1 in SEC (SEC Champions, 11th in 16 years), SEC Tournament Champions (9th), eliminated in 2nd round of NCAA Tournament
  • 2011 (12-8-1/3-5-0) - 17-8 overall, 7-4 in SEC, eliminated in 2nd round of NCAA Tournament (yes, they seem to have a block in the NCAA Tournament)

Women's Cross Country:

  • 2009 (7th in B12, 7th in NCAA Midwest Regional) - SEC Champions, 7th in NCAA Championships
  • 2010 (11th in B12, 12th in NCAA Midwest Regional) - SEC Champions (5th), 29th in NCAA Championships
  • 2011 (4th in B12, 7th in NCAA Midwest Regional) - 3rd in SEC, 3rd in NCAA South Regional

Men's Cross Country:

  • 2009 (T-8th in B12, 11th in NCAA Midwest Regional) - 4th in SEC, 5th in NCAA South Regional
  • 2010 (11th in B12, 18th in NCAA Midwest Regional) - 3rd in SEC, 3rd in NCAA South Regional
  • 2011 (6th in B12, 7th in NCAA Midwest Regional) - 2nd in SEC, 30th in NCAA Championships

Women's Volleyball:

  • 2009 (18-14 overall, 9-11 in B12) - 25-6 overall, 16-4 in SEC, eliminated in Sweet 16 of NCAA Tournament
  • 2010 (22-11 overall, 12-8 in B12, eliminated in NCAA Sweet 16) - 29-1 overall, 20-0 in SEC (SEC Champions, 19th, including a run from 1991 to 2008), eliminated in Sweet 16 of NCAA Tournament
  • 2011 (21-13 overall, 7-9 in B12, eliminated in NCAA 1st round) - 27-6 overall, 17-3 in SEC, eliminated in Elite 8 of NCAA Tournamen (defeated Mizzou 3-1 in 1st round)

Women's Indoor Track:

  • 2010 (10th in B12) - SEC Champions, 4th in NCAA Championships
  • 2011 (12th in B12) - 5th in SEC
  • 2012 (10th in B12) - SEC Champions (7th), 9th in NCAA Championships

Men's Indoor Track:

  • 2010 (9th in B12, 25th in NCAA Championships) - 2nd in SEC, NCAA Champions
  • 2011 (9th in B12, t-26th in NCAA Championships) - SEC Champions (6th), NCAA Champions
  • 2012 (8th in B12, t-61st in NCAA Championships) - 2nd in SEC, NCAA Champions (3rd overall)

Women's Gymnastics:

  • 2010 (3rd in B12, 12th in NCAA Championships) - SEC Champions, 5th in NCAA Championships
  • 2011 (4th in B12, 6th in NCAA Regional Championships) - 2nd in SEC, 4th in NCAA Semifinal II Round (missing Super 6 by one spot)
  • 2012 (t-2nd in B12, 4th in NCAA Regional Championships) - SEC Champions (8th), 2nd in NCAA Championships

Women's Basketball:

  • 2010 (12-18 overall, 2-14 in B12) - 15-17 overall, 7-9 in SEC, eliminated in 2nd round of WNIT
  • 2011 (13-18 overall, 5-11 in B12) - 20-15 overall, 7-9 in SEC, eliminated in 3rd round of WNIT
  • 2012 (13-18 overall, 2-14 in B12) - 20-13 overall, 8-8 in SEC, eliminated in 2nd round of NCAA Tournament

Women's Swimming and Diving:

Men's Golf:

  • 2011 (53-10 overall, 13-2 in B12, B12 Regular Season Champions (1st), eliminated in WCWS) - 56-13 overall, 21-7 in SEC (SEC East Champions, 5th), NCAA Runner-Up (defeated Mizzou in WCWS)
  • 2012 (47-14 overall, 17-7 in B12, eliminated in NCAA Super Regionals) - 48-13 overall, 21-7 in SEC, eliminated in NCAA Regionals

Baseball:

  • 2010 (29-26 overall, 10-16 in B12) - 47-17 overall, 22-8 in SEC, eliminated in CWS
  • 2011 (27-32 overall, 12-15 in B12) - 53-19 overall, 22-8 in SEC (SEC Champions, 12th), SEC Tournament Champions (6th), NCAA Runner-Up
  • 2012 (32-28 overall, 9-14 in B12, B12 Tournament Champions (first), eliminated in NCAA Regionals) - 47-18 overall, 18-12 in SEC, eliminated in CWS

Summary:

Seriously...each time I moved to another sport, I thought there was no way Florida could be as good as they were in the sport I had just looked up. And in most cases, they were. This is our new Texas, but they are better. If there is anything I can say negatively, it is that they seem to have a mental block on the NCAA's for soccer and volleyball, as they appear to have underperformed based on their regular seasons in a number of years. But beyond that, they are the measuring stick, plain and simple.
