Mizzou Links, 10-7-13: Frank's still a Tank, and Volleyball's still undefeated

James Franklin can still go into Tank Mode sometimes, Michael Sam is still wrecking shop, and Mizzou Volleyball is still just cruising along, undefeated.

The wrecking ball.
The wrecking ball.

1. Mizzou Still Beat Vanderbilt

The Trib (Behind the Stripes): GAME REWIND: Missouri 51, Vanderbilt 28

Yet More Tanklin: This subhead should just take up residence in this feature every week. In need of an answer, Missouri faced a 3rd-and-12 at the Vanderbilt 19. Franklin rolled left, gave a token look in Jaleel Clark's direction, felt the pressure and took off, finishing off an 11-yard run by barreling over Herring and Jake Sealand -- combined payload: 458 pounds. Franklin helped Herring up. But Herring sat back down. He still needed a couple of moments to shake off the hit. Missouri went for it on 4th-and-1 and got it, setting up a Josey touchdown that pushed its lead back to 37-14. Gary Pinkel and Co. are probably still nervous when Franklin plows into a pile like that. But man, has it been effective this year. […]

Sam = Sack: Vanderbilt had a 4th-and-12 at the Missouri 47. The Tigers only sent three rushers, but Michael Sam made it count, outflanking redshirt freshman tackle Andrew Jelks and dropping Carta-Samuels for a 5-yard loss and a turnover on downs. It was Sam's second sack of the evening. He'd get another later in the game, despite being held, on a 4th-and-8. That was the Tigers' seventh sack of the night and 12th in the past two weeks. Sam has six on the year, all in the past two weeks. I think you'd call that "beastly."

Freshman Casey Stengel (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) earned the win against Crowder in the first game for the Tigers after pitching five innings, giving up one earned run on three hits while striking out six. Senior Alora Marble (Jefferson City, Mo.) pitched the last two innings for Mizzou and did not give up a single run while allowing only two hits to Crowder.

Junior first baseman Kelsea Roth (Yorba Linda, Calif.) started the scoring for the Tigers with a solo home run in the top of the second inning. Mizzou grabbed ahold of the momentum scoring five runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth. Freshman third baseman Natalie Fleming (Silex, Missouri) added a three-run homer in the sixth inning, driving in six overall in the game.

In the second game against Butler, Junior Corrin Genovese (East Amherst, N.Y.) drove in two runs on a double for the Tigers in the sixth. The Tigers tallied 19 hits to Butler CC's four on the day, with each Tiger starter recording at least one hit.

Freshman pitcher Tori Finucane (Germantown, Md.) gave up one run on one hit over five innings, while striking out eight Butler hitters. Senior Alora Marble pitched the last two innings again for Mizzou, giving up only three hits on the day and not allowing any runs to score.

So our friends at Blueshirt Banter, with permission, took ghtd36's old How to Post a Pic tutorial and updated it a bit. I'd been meaning to do this for like a year, so ... hooray!

Music Monday

Mizzou heads to Athens this weekend, which begs an obvious question: What are your favorite REM songs? This list from Paste is pretty decent, I think, though it tries really, really hard not to pick the obvious ones ("Losing My Religion," etc.), which are both obvious and really good. But yeah, stuff like "Nightswimming" and "Driver 8" deserve a hat tip as well.
