Mizzou Links, 9-10-13: Markus Golden is fast, and auto-suspensions stink

Bill Carter

Hello! I'm back in Columbia and back in charge(ish). Though I guess the place was running just fine without me ... maybe I'll just go back to bed.

1. Markus really did look like he was shot out of a cannon on that pick six, didn't he? Golden Named SEC Defensive Line Player of the Week
KC Star: Markus Golden has speed to burn at defensive end for Tigers

2. I think you're going to see more and more coaches saying things like this Mizzou Football Head Coach Gary Pinkel on Paying Student-Athletes
The Missourian: Coach Gary Pinkel: Pay Missouri Tigers football, basketball players
The Trib (Behind the Stripes): Bye Week Bits: Pinkel in favor of paying players; Golden earns SEC honor

3. Season's started ... can we at least wait until a loss to bring this up?

Post-Dispatch (Burwell): Pinkel on the hot seat? He shouldn't be

4. QB No. 1

The Missourian: Missouri football's Franklin doesn't follow Pinkel's advice, leads Tigers against Toledo
The Trib: Franklin can't help but deliver a couple of blows as MU tops Rockets
Fox Sports MW: So far, so good for Mizzou QB James Franklin

5. My primary question about Andrew Wilson's targeting penalty:

What could he have done differently? He led with his hands, and the only reason he hit above the shoulder pads was because the guy was in the air and coming down at him, and he had to guess where to strike. He didn't "target" anything. This is why I absolutely hate the auto-suspension. This was an accident. This was not even in the 50th percentile of Wilson's hardest/meanest hits.

The Missourian: Missouri football's Andrew Wilson suspended for violating new targeting rule
Fox Sports MW: Faurot's first look at tougher targeting penalty ruffles feathers

6. Early bye (and other stuff)

Post-Dispatch: Tigers settle in for rare early bye week
PowerMizzou: The Breakdown: Missouri and Bye Weeks

So I guess it was hot on Saturday?
Post-Dispatch: MU police respond to medical emergencies amid heat

But vanilla's tasty...
The Trib (Behind the Stripes): SNAP DECISIONS: Tigers get a little less vanilla on offense vs. Toledo

KC Star: Tod Palmer is The Star’s new Mizzou beat writer

How'd Mizzou commits do this weekend?
PowerMizzou: Following the Future: 9/9
