Missouri football, Week 4 depth chart notes: Minimal news is probably good news

Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

The Missouri game notes for Arkansas State were posted yesterday (PDF). As always, they feature an updated depth chart. Here are some notes:

  • Max Copeland is indeed listed as the starting left guard with Mitch L. Hall as the primary backup. With Copeland still gimpy against Indiana, Hall, Anthony Gatti (backup LT) and Brad McNulty (backup C) all saw time at the position. We'll see if or how much Copeland can go.
  • Eric Waters and Sean Culkin are still listed as "OR" starters at tight end, though Waters is now listed first, if that means anything at all.
  • Marcus Murphy is still listed as the No. 3 running back, though it should be clear at this point that the number of carries he, Henry Josey, and Russell Hansbrough will get depend on matchups and needs. They each bring something a little bit different to the table.
  • Bud Sasser is still listed as the starting H receiver, though Jimmie Hunt got a lion's share of the playing time last week, for better (more of a threat in the receiving game) or worse (holding penalty in run blocking).
  • Lucas Vincent and Harold Brantley are still listed as "OR" starters at nose guard.
  • Markus Golden is still listed behind Brayden Burnett at DE behind Kony Ealy, though it does appear that he'll continue to see playing time, especially in passing downs.
  • I believe nothing has actually changed at cornerback, where Aarion Penton and John Gibson are still listed as the second-stringers and Xavier Smith and David Johnson are third-string.

Other notes from the notes:

  • Before Saturday, James Franklin somehow hadn't scored a rushing touchdown since the 2011 Independence Bowl. That's crazy.
  • As you probably heard on Saturday, Mizzou's 623 yards were the most ever gained by an opponent at Indiana.
  • Mizzou has intercepted two more passes in 2013 than it did in 12 games in 2012.
  • Kony Ealy is tied for first among all defensive linemen with five passes defensed.
  • And yes, Gary Pinkel is now tied for the second-most wins as Missouri head coach. He caught Dan Devine on Saturday and could move ahead on Saturday. Granted, Devine had 24 fewer losses.
  • Assuming Max Copeland can indeed go, Mizzou's starting offensive line will bring 72 career starts to the table. If Gatti goes instead, it would be 60. If it's Hall, 59.
