2014 Missouri basketball recruiting: Namon Wright commits to Tigers, Chris Sandifer decommits

Missouri arranged a trade of sorts this weekend. Los Angeles guard Chris Sandifer decided to re-open his recruitment after committing to the Tigers in June, and Mizzou basically replaced him with Los Angeles guard Namon Wright, a four-star prospect and the No. 87 player in the Class of 2014 according to Rivals.com.

According to Wright he was blown away on his visit and knew quickly that Missouri was the place for him.

"I don't know where to start. Players that come in and go through their program get better and they track all that improvement. I feel like Missouri will make me a better basketball player. The best player I can be," explained Wright. "They have a great strength program and it's tailored to basketball. Lot of schools just have strength programs that aren't sport specific, so that was a big deal." […]

Wright, who will play his senior season at powerhouse program Findlay Prep, picked the Tigers over offers from Arizona State, Florida State, Gonzaga, Oregon and USC. Wright said that he is done with visits and is 100% committed to Mizzou. He added that he is definitely planning to sign in the early period.

Frank Haith’s staff continues to recruit Mizzou legacy Devin Booker, the son of former All-American guard Melvin Booker and one of the nation’s elite backcourt prospects. Booker has listed Missouri among his five finalists, along with Florida, Kentucky, Michigan and Michigan State. Booker is expected to visit Mizzou twice next month, for his official recruiting trip Oct. 18 and again the following weekend when MU celebrates his father’s 1993 Big Eight championship team during an exhibition game at the Hearnes Center. Also, Ahmed Hill, a shooting guard from Augusta, Ga., plans to visit Mizzou in November.

The Trib: Tigers get pledge from top-100 recruit Wright

According to Eric Bossi in Wright's Rivals.com profile, Wright, 6'5, 175 pounds, is interesting and inconsistent at the moment.

An up and down shooting guard who seems to be a bit feast or famine. When he's on there is a great blend of outside jump shooting, finishing at the rim and mid range pull-up jumpers. When off, his defense suffers and shot selection gets questionable.

His ESPN scouting report basically says the same.

He has that quintessential Division I frame with excellent length (long arms/big hands) and he utilizes it well while slithering to the rim. His jump shot is feathery out to the 3-point line and his mid-range game is evolving. […] Wright needs to continue to improve his all around game and become a consistent performer with each game. His handle is solid, but he needs to get stronger with the ball while defenders get into him, especially while driving left.

Wright's playing at Findlay Prep, a high school powerhouse, this winter, so he should certainly get some solid competition and exposure. We'll learn more about him going forward, but here's his junior highlight reel for now.
