Mizzou Links: A new challenge for Stec, a good weekend for wrestling

Dave Steckel takes a pay cut to become a head coach, Michael Sam is still not in the NFL, and Mizzou Wrestling had one hell of a weekend.

How about the greatest high school highlight video you'll ever see?

Giddy up

This, by the way, is my favorite/least favorite Twitter post of the weekend.

Memes never die, even when drowned in contrary evidence.

And on the topic of replacements...
The Trib: Odom on the coaching fast track at Memphis

When it came time to run his own defense, Odom drew on prior experiences and meshed it with the personnel available at Memphis. The Tigers lacked line depth, so he ran a 3-4. Through recruiting, Memphis can be a bit more multiple now, but it’s still a system that allows an outside linebacker such as Tank Jakes to rack up 15½ tackles for loss, six sacks and earn AAC co-Defensive Player of the Year honors.

"They’re very aggressive, unconventional, unpredictable. Kind of a nightmare in terms of all the different looks they give you and what all you have to account for," Ofodile said. "They put the most athletic guys they can out on the field at every position. There’s a lot of speed, movement, unconventional ways of getting into things so you really don’t, presnap, know what you’re getting. That’s incredibly difficult, especially when you put good athletes out there doing it. He’s put together a great defensive scheme. The results speak for themselves."

It's been a hell of a year

Grantland: The Kiss

One of the lessons of 2014 is that any nasty rumor you hear about the NFL is at least partially true. There’s undoubtedly some percentage of teams whose owner or GM or coach muttered something that precluded signing Sam. But it’s hard to nail down the breadth of such a snub. Was it half the teams in the league? One quarter? "Unfortunately, it’s one of those things where unless you’re a superstar, a Jackie Robinson–type talent, there are so many plausible reasons they can use for getting rid of you," said Chris Kluwe.

And it’s worth noting that some Sam fans don’t see a conspiracy. Wade Davis spent chunks of his career shuttling between the far edge of the roster and the practice squad. For him, Sam right now is a marginal NFL player whom a lot of us desperately want to succeed.
