SEC Power Rankings Week 4

New, 13 comments

With all the bowl games announced and no football to distract you, it's time to embrace some SEC Basketball. The SEC is doing SEC things, winning good tough games and then losing headscratchers to directional colleges that no one has heard of. It truly is the season of SECBASKETBALLFEVER.

The SEC so far into the non conference season is a roller coaster ride, there's no other way to describe it. You've got teams going up and down, winning games one minute then completely falling flat on their face the next.  The SEC has lost some games in spectacularly bad fashion, it's almost become comical at this point.  Don't let anyone tell you that SEC basketball isn't interesting, the way in which some teams are playing is amazing.  Years from now we're going to look back on this year and still be wondering what is going on.

At the top of the conference you've got Kentucky, I know, big surprise! The Cats remain undefeated and there is nothing you can do about it. They are straight mauling teams, highly ranked teams are being forced to look like children out there against Big Blue. Honestly, the only way they lose a game in the SEC will have to require an act of a higher power and some serious shenanigans in the SEC front office.  The Gators get back to second place solely for the fact that they are beating the teams you'd expect them to beat.  That's where we've come to people! Wins over Yale, Texas Southern and Jacksonville University is now good enough for second.

Coming in third, you've got the Hogs and the Hogs are doing just your normal Arkansas things, big win at home over Dayton, after two losses on the road because Arkansas doesn't do that whole road thing.  Clearly, the only answer is that they be hypnotized into thinking they're at home. Making our biggest jump up the rankings are the Tigers of the Bayou vaulting from 8th to 4th after a big win on the road over the West Virginia and Bobby Huggins who I'm sure will only bring out the lucky velour jump suit and mock turtleneck going forward.

In the middle you've got Alabama who just SEC'ed a win into a loss to Wichita State where they were leading by 11 points with less than six minutes to play before falling by one; and let's be clear, this is why the SEC can't have nice things.  You've then got A&M and Georgia just sitting there quietly winning the games they should, not looking terrible in the losses they take and really are just hoping that they don't get exposed to whatever got into the lower portion of the conference's water.  Following them, Tennessee got a big win over Butler, everyone's favorite Hoosiers (not the St. Louis or Bloomington kind) which was followed with a loss to NC State on the road, which to be honest, as SEC fans we should embrace this and hold onto.

From there you have the upper crust of the lower part of the conference you've got South Carolina, Ole Miss and Vandy, who aren't doing anything flashy, and not doing anything particularly embarrassing just kind of motoring along and trying to stay out of the bottom and the bottom my friends is a nightmare.  Whatever Mississippi State, Mizzou and Auburn are doing, well it's just not basketball. Fans of these schools (like us here at Rock M Nation) should just sit back and let their teams take their beatings and hope no one comes out of the season mentally broken.  Just close your eyes, hum a nice tune to yourself and before you know it, it'll be spring and all will be right with your world again, or grab a bottle of the strong stuff and strap in!

11th = 4, 12th = 3, 13th = 2, and 14th = 1

Brutal loss at Wichita State, but being that close on the road shows how good this team can be. (Garnet and Black Attack)

Another gut-wrenching loss in yet another game where the Tide could have put a huge gold star on the resume. That seems to be Grant's forte. (Roll Bama Roll)

This close Bama, you were this close to knocking off Wichita St, but here we are with three losses. With a chance to get a signature non conference win the Tide fell short against ISU, Xavier and Wichita. (For Whom the Cowbell Tolls)

None of their wins stand out but they could be decent. (Dawg Sports)

Nice rebound win over Dayton, but only 1-2 on the road so far, and that was against a severely undermanned SMU team. (Garnet and Black Attack)

Tough sledding on the road, but Hogs have 3 weeks before they have to do THAT again. (Rock M Nation)

Things are bad at Auburn. Real bad. (Rock M Nation)

The only reason they aren't below Missouri is the benefit of the doubt getting Antoine Mason healthy. (Dawg Sports)

A three-game losing streak to Texas Tech, Coastal, and Clemson. That's not exactly a murderer's row, Tigers. (Garnet and Black Attack)

They should be better than this. (Dawg Sports)

The Gators have lost a good amount of games, but they all been against really good competition. Also, name another team in the SEC that you think would even be in position to blow a 15 point lead at Kansas.(Roll Bama Roll)

A dominating win over a Yale team that beat the defending national champions? That’s the biggest win the Gators have, but all of their losses are forgivable.(For Whom the Cowbell Tolls)

This team has rebounded well after starting the season 3-3. The win over Colorado was big for the team and if they build off their momentum they should be able to close out the non conference strong. (A Sea of Blue)

None of their wins stand out but they could be decent. (Dawg Sports)

The Dawgs are just kind of floating right now. No impressive wins and no ugly losses. (Roll Bama Roll)

They ain't moving from here. (Garnet and Black Attack)

¯\_()_/¯. (Roll Bama Roll)

Struggled with Columbia more than one would expect, but that defense is something else. If Kentucky beats Louisville they will finish the regular season undefeated, there is no one in the SEC who can challenge them.. (For Whom the Cowbell Tolls)

The Bayou Bengals' two earlier losses aren't looking too shabby now, and the huge win at West Virginia will be a big selling point on the resume. Their post play is tremendous. (Roll Bama Roll)

We'll see how that guard depth holds up with Gray out for a few weeks. (Rock M Nation)

Didn't expect LSU to go out and win in Morgantown. No real challenges left in the non-conference, so we'll see how real they are in the SEC. (Garnet and Black Attack)

Even Auburn beat Oregon State, guys. (Roll Bama Roll)

After starting the season 5-0 the Bulldogs find themselves in a shooting slump and a four game losing streak. In his third year Coach Rick Ray is going to have to find answers quickly if the Bulldogs are going to compete in the SEC. (For Whom the Cowbell Tolls)

Finally back down where I thought they'd be thanks to a three-game losing streak, though none of those losses in Starkville. They're still a lot better than they were 12 months ago. (Garnet and Black Attack)

It doesn't look good so far. (Dawg Sports)

We're all still waiting to see if they turn a corner. (Rock M Nation)

Not last, boom! (Roll Bama Roll)

Consistency is an important quality many good basketball teams possess, unfortunately this is not a quality the rebels have. When Ole Miss comes out on the court you're not sure what team you are going to see. Will you get the team that beat Creighton and Cincinnati or the one that lost at home to Western Kentucky and Charleston Southern? (For Whom the Cowbell Tolls)

The Rebels are peak #SECBasketballFever right now. Losses to Charleston Southern and Western Kentucky at home, wins against Creighton, Cincinnati and Oregon all on the road. ¯\_()_/¯. (Roll Bama Roll)

Losing to WKU at home is another step in the wrong direction for the Rebels. (Rock M Nation)

Frank Martin was able to get the Gamecocks clicking on offense against Oklahoma State in a 26 point blowout, but next up is rival Clemson who has been a SEC killer this year with a perfect 3-0 record against SEC teams. (For Whom the Cowbell Tolls)

Still living large on that Oklahoma State demolition. A chance to prove it was real when they host Clemson on Friday. (Garnet and Black Attack)

Big win over Okie State, is it a pattern or a one off? (Rock M Nation)

The Butler win ain't bad. But I still think they stink.(Dawg Sports)

Back-to-back wins over Kansas State and Butler? Donnie Tyndall took a team that didn't really do anything in their tournament (losses to Kansas and Marquette) and turned them into a team with two very nice home wins. (Garnet and Black Attack)

You know what's coming right, TYNDALL. FOR. WHAT! (Rock M Nation)

After a tough loss to Baylor, A&M is back to winning, needs a strong game vs. Kansas State. (Rock M Nation)

Not a very solid performance at Baylor, which knocks them below the Gamecocks. They still should be a very tough out in College Station this year, though. (Garnet and Black Attack)

Basically the same resume as Alabama, minus the heartbreakingly close upset victory. (Roll Bama Roll)

Because of their horrible arena. (Honestly, the margin between 5 and 11 on paper right now doesn't seem like a lot). (Dawg Sports)

Didn't expect the Commodores to grab a big home win over Purdue. If Kevin Stallings gets this team to a winning record, it's probably his best coaching job in a series of great ones in Nashville. (For Whom the Cowbell Tolls)

They have lost their two games this season by a combined six points and the win over Big Ten Purdue could prove valuable later on. They face a big road test in Georgia Tech, win that game and the rest of the non conference schedule should be a piece of cake. (For Whom the Cowbell Tolls)

And there you have it! The SEC ranked top to bottom, the good, the bad, the ugly and the down right miserable. Keep coming back week to week to see if this conference starts sorting itself out, or if it doesn't. The SEC has had a bumpy start but that's what makes it so fun! Grab a drink, put on some comforting music and let's all watch the SEC go plaid.  The Fever is real people, dig it!
