Bowl announcements, that's what!
All Citrus everything
This will be Mizzou's second appearance in the Citrus Bowl, as the Tigers claimed a 19-17 win on Dec. 19, 1981 over Southern Mississippi, when the bowl was named the Tangerine Bowl. Additionally, Head Coach Gary Pinkel will be making a return trip himself, as he played in the game for Kent State on Dec. 29, 1972, with Tampa taking a 21-18 win.
Football Season ticket holders and Tiger Scholarship Fund donors have an extended priority deadline of tomorrow (Monday) at Noon to place orders for the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl.
Priority requests can be placed through the Mizzou Ticket Office by logging in at www.mutigers.com/myaccount and selecting 'Buy Packages/Tickets' on the home screen. Individuals can then choose the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl and select the number of seats they wish to request. Requests will then be allocated by TSF donor level and priority points prior to the general public sale, which will begin Monday afternoon at 1 p.m.
"I'm very honored," Missouri Coach Gary Pinkel said. "They have a choice of a lot of different schools they could have taken in the SEC. And they chose the University of Missouri. That made me feel really good, as a matter of fact. I needed something to pick me up a little bit today."
The Big Ten chooses the Citrus, Outback and Holiday bowls at the same time after the CFP makes its choices.
No. 5 Ohio State made a national semifinal against Alabama -- as it was ranked No. 4 in the CFP -- and No. 7 Michigan State made the Cotton Bowl -- one of the CFP access bowls -- against No. 4 Baylor.
The Big Ten sent No. 17 Wisconsin to the Outback and No. 25 Nebraska to the Holiday.
Minnesota beat Nebraska and lost to Wisconsin over the final two weeks of the season. The Gophers are playing in their first New Year's Day bowl since 1962.
Mizzou fans, and maybe Pinkel, too, are conditioned for disappointing news when bowl pairings are set.
Not this time.
Pinkel said his team was "elated," "excited" and "thrilled" to play in the SEC’s top non-playoff bowl, especially after the letdown in Saturday’s 42-13 loss.
"If you play in this league, this is a bowl you want the opportunity to play in," Pinkel said. "I think it was really uplifting for (the team)."
