Mizzou Links, 2-25-14: Effort isn't everything on defense, but it doesn't hurt

Frank Haith preaches greater defensive effort, Jabari Brown is an incredible offensive player, and spring football is two weeks away.

1. Effort isn't everything, but it's a start

At this stage in the game, I know why Frank Haith is hammering away at the "effort" message. First of all, it's all he can control at this point. It's almost 90% of the way through the season; there is no more building talent or coming up with a new way to teach/play defense. You've just got to have your guys try as hard as they can and hope that's enough. Second of all, he's at least partially right. Trying harder doesn't automatically make your footwork or your instincts better, and it certainly doesn't prevent you from over-rotating on passes around the 3-point line, but it controls something.

2. Jabari has been awesome

Regardless of defensive effectiveness, we have certainly witnessed one of the most efficient, explosive offensive performances we'll ever see this year.
