The Trib (Behind the Stripes): Draft Hopeful Q&A: FB Max Copeland
Has it been difficult to keep off all this weight after playing at 310-315 pounds during your senior year?
"I’m not saying it was easy, because making that kind of change in a short amount of time was really hard. I just beat the hell out of myself for a few months, and that’s what it took. Really, I don’t think many people know how hard it was to stay at the weight I was at to play offensive line. I’m not meant to be 300 pounds. As much as I love being big and strong -- well, I’m still big and strong, so I’ll strike that -- and being an offensive lineman, living that lifestyle, it was really hard for me to do. I had to be close to a kitchen every two, two and a half hours and be shoveling chicken breasts into my mouth. It was good, I loved it, it was great. But it was a relief to get to not feel like I had to constantly be eating, eating, eating. I could focus more on just training, which is what I love. I hate eating and I love training. If I can do less eating and more training, I love it."
How did your family react to the change?
"It was totally weird. My family didn’t see me when I was training because I was here. I really kept it pretty low-profile. I was spending all day training and was kind of just a hermit. Once they saw me, 10 inches was cut from my hair, I dyed a green streak in my hair and was 50 pounds lighter. And I was catching footballs at pro day. So they’re like, ‘Who is this guy?’ The truth is, I didn’t tell anybody. And I did that on purpose. I wanted this to be my transformation and, for a while, I wanted to make it pure. And pro day was kind of my unveiling. Like, ‘OK, I’m going to share this now.’ I remember my dad looking at me like, ‘Who are you?’ The last time he saw me, there was a giant gash on my face, I was 310 pounds and had a huge beard I hadn’t shaved for a year. Now, I was just a completely different looking person. But that’s kind of par for the course for me. Every five years, I end up making some sort of drastic change. I don’t sit still very well. I’m always changing."
