Mizzou Links, 6-19-14: Tigers land a punter, basketball gets to "roots"

Punter Corey Fatony becomes Mizzou's ninth 2015 football commitment, basketball gets back to "roots" (I guess the statute of limitation on Roots jokes has expired, huh?), and #Stubble Field is on the curators' docket.

1. The rare punter commitment

Mizzou doesn't offer many kickers or punters, and the ones the Tigers have offered and landed haven't actually been very good. But that tiny sample size doesn't actually hold any meaning, and you still see Gary Pinkel and company throw offers out here and there. And on Wednesday, they got a bite.

Blue Springs' Adam Jones, who's spent the past 16 years at the school and is in his third year as the Wildcats' head coach, said that for the first time in his tenure, the team skipped coming to Columbia last season and instead went to the Kansas camp.

"When Coach Anderson got hired, we immediately got back into it," Jones said. "We wanted to be back in our Missouri roots and with Coach Anderson and all the other teams that come down here annually." [...]

"I know him and his staff are making it a priority to try to close the borders down and keep those kids in-state," [LSW head coach Michael] Schieber said. "You just look around the state of Missouri at kids that have been in St. Louis or Kansas City or other places around that have left and went on to great college careers and even some pro careers, so we need these kids to stay home and play at the University of Missouri."
