Fox Sports MW: Many somewhat-proven players must step up for Mizzou defense this fall

"I think a lot of people are going to be surprised because, even at the positions we lost (players), those positions even in fall camp were still kind of being battled for," sophomore linebacker Michael Scherer said. "There's a lot of kids who are in those positions who got a lot of playing time last year. ... So all the people that we have to replace are being replaced by people who have a good amount of experience and know what the situation is like."

Scherer, who will enter fall camp as the starter at the strongside linebacker spot, is one of the new starters to keep an eye on this fall.

"I'm just ready to prove myself, to both everybody outside the team and the team," he said. "To show that I can be the guy that they rely on and that they can trust me being in there the whole game."

The Trib (Behind the Stripes): Missouri's Success Recruiting Missouri

The Lee's Summit area has been pretty good to Missouri lately, with seven Rivals top-10 prospects coming from Lee's Summit and Lee's Summit West and four ending up at Missouri.

Plus, Logan Cheadle and Kevin Pendleton from West were in this year's class.

Blue Springs has been especially troublesome for Missouri over the past six classes, as it has produced seven players in Rivals' top 10 for the state but none of them ended up going -- or in the case of the Davis twins this year are committed to going -- to Missouri.

Also: Columbia and Jefferson City.

Three Rock Bridge players and two players from the state capital have been in the Rivals top 10 over the past six years and none have ended up in Columbia.
