Not much post-scrimmage news, WHICH IS THE BEST POSSIBLE TIMELINE. Lots of news after a scrimmage either means there were injuries or the team looked awful. Luckily, neither of those scenarios occurred in Columbia.
There were however, things to analyze. Take it away, analysts:
Nick Schnelle @ The Tribune: D-Line proves destructive in MU's 1st fall scrimmage
Ends Golden, Charles Harris and Marcus Loud all recorded touch sacks. So did tackle Josh Augusta, who split time with Harold Brantley on the first team as starter Matt Hoch sat with a pectoral muscle injury. Harris and Golden each had two quarterback pressures, and Shane Ray and Augusta added one. Golden batted down two passes, Augusta got his gigantic hand on one and Brantley notched a tackle for a loss.
Even when things looked to have gone wrong for the Tigers’ line, they usually turned out all right. Quarterback Maty Mauk appeared to have hit Marcus Murphy for a 14-yard touchdown pass during the two-minute drill late in the scrimmage, but the play was called back because Loud had touched Mauk down.
Also, tight... Ends? In the passing game? I get that we want to be progressive on offense, but this might be a stretch.
Tight ends Sean Culkin and Jason Reese got involved in the intermediate pass game, as well, combining for 88 yards on seven catches.
"You’ll see some more" tight ends in the pass game, "honest opinion," Culkin said. "Not that last year was a bad year — it’s just our role was different. We had to really help in pass protection and run blocking.
"I want them thinking, ‘He’s a reliable target on third-and-2. Let’s hit that big body, get a first down.’ "
David Morrison @ The Trib: Missouri Fall Camp Notes: The "Can We Start 6?" edition
Taylor Chappell filled in for Connor McGovern at starting right tackle during Missouri's scrimmage Tuesday, while McGovern continued to recover from a strained pectoral muscle.
The junior must have shown offensive line coach A.J. Ricker some good things, because now he's at the front of the pack at right guard.
Ricker said Chappell and junior Mitch Hall -- who had been holding down the right guard spot since spring -- are "even up there. Really it's about getting the five best guys right now."
So, does Missouri have six starters on its offensive line?
"Basically," Ricker said. "If they'll let us play with six."
FUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTURE
- Ricker said he's been very impressed with what he's seen out of the Tigers' young linemen: "The young guys are making huge strides. The future is bright, especially with (Kevin) Pendleton, (Paul) Adams. (Sam) Bailey is really coming along, we've just got to get some weight on him. All those young guys -- (Andy) Bauer -- I'm shocked. They're coming in as freshmen and people are looking at the scrimmage and saying, 'Oh my gosh, these guys are in the backfield. You kind of forget (Mike) Fairchild's a true freshman going against Shane Ray. To me, that's how you get better. He's got to forget that stuff. He'll get better."
The (backup) Arms Race
Quarterbacks coach Andy Hill didn't hint at any sort of separation between Corbin Berkstresser and Eddie Printz as Maty Mauk's backup: "You get equal time against the one defense, the two defense, whoever's going to be there. When you go pretty much evenly like we did" in scrimmage, "then it's pretty easy to evaluate that. ... They've both done some great things. At the same time, they've got to be consistently doing that. You're taking care of the football, you're leading the team, you're doing a lot of positive things, but you've got to keep doing it, moving the football and putting points on the board. That's what we're judged by, winning and losing. And taking care of the football at the quarterback spot."
#CoachSpeak
Pinkel opined a bit on the SEC Network, which launches tomorrow: "I think it's going to be huge. And I know this: it's going to be done remarkably first-class. I guarantee it. It's going to be at the highest, highest level, very competitive and beyond all the other things you see out there. It's a tremendous thing for the SEC. There's a national appeal to the SEC, which we've felt in recruiting. Now, anywhere in the country, you'll get a chance to watch, really learn, know and find out about the SEC. I think it's awesome."
