DeMarkus Acy, a 6'1, 172-pound safety from Dallas' Wilmer-Hutchins high school (a 4A school), just announced his commitment to Mizzou. Barry Odom is the lead recruiter in the Dallas, Texas area.

Acy's a pretty interesting prospect in that his recruiting ratings aren't amazing -- low-three stars via Rivals, mid-three via the 247Sports Composite -- but his offer list is stellar: Per Rivals he listed offers from Arizona State and a majority of the Big 12: Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech. Granted, we don't know how committable those offers were, or if he was a backup plan of sorts at some of those schools, but on its face, that's a pretty impressive list.

I'm assuming part of his middling recruiting rankings come simply from the fact that he's a 170-pound safety. Weight probably won't be much of a problem after he spends a year with Pat Ivey, but if he can get up into the 190- or 195-pound range, he could work out pretty well. Because if there's one thing his highlight film tells us, it's that he likes to hit.
Acy's got a reckless streak in him, which we assume the coaches will try to clean up, but he looks the part of a high-ceiling safety.
Acy's commitment is Missouri's 16th for what is expected to be an approximately 20-man class. Since I wrote this post in mid-September, Mizzou has scored commits from Illinois tight end Albert Okwuegbunam and Alabama defensive lineman Tyreic Martin. One assumes the primary focus for the remaining scholarships will be mostly on scoring another linebacker commitment and perhaps a defensive lineman or two. Regardless ... WELCOME, DEMARKUS.
