Missouri's game notes for the trip to Arkansas State are out, and the only significant depth chart changes have to do with injuries. Wesley Lefwich returns to the lineup after missing the season opener, while Russell Hansbrough and Evan Boehm are both listed as questionable after spraining ankles.
Offense
QB
Maty Mauk (6'0, 195, Jr.) -- 12-for-22, 181 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT, 2 sacks (7.3 yds/attempt); 4 carries, 13 yards
Drew Lock (6'4, 205, Fr.) -- 6-for-10, 138 yards, 1 TD, 1 sack (12.1 yds/attempt)
Eddie Printz (6'3, 205, So.) -OR-
Marvin Zanders (6'1, 185, RSFr.)
No changes here, nor would we expect changes unless injuries are involved.
RB
Russell Hansbrough (5'9, 195, Sr.) -- 2 carries, 23 yards (11.5) -- QUESTIONABLE
Ish Witter (5'10, 190, So.) -- 13 carries, 33 yards (2.5); 1 target, 1 catch, 5 yards
Tyler Hunt (5'11, 210, Sr.) -- 5 carries, 20 yards (4.0); 1 target, 1 catch, 78 yards, 1 TD
Morgan Steward (6'0, 210, Jr.) -- 5 carries, 14 yards (2.8); 1 target, 0 catches
That Hansbrough is listed at all is an encouraging sign, but as I wrote earlier today, I assume his status will be unknown until game time. At the very least, that means plenty of first-team reps for Witter and the other running backs; they need them.
WR-X
J'Mon Moore (6'3, 190, So.) -- 4 targets, 3 catches, 74 yards (18.5 per target), 1 TD
DeSean Blair (6'3, 190, RSFr.) -- 2 targets, 1 catch, 21 yards (10.5)
Emanuel Hall (6'3, 200, Fr.) -- 4 targets, 1 catch, 9 yards (2.3)
WR-H
Nate Brown (6'3, 205, So.) -- 5 targets, 3 catches, 69 yards (13.8), 1 TD
Thomas Richard (6'1, 190, RSFr.) -- 2 targets, 1 catch, 4 yards (2.0)
Ray Wingo (5'11, 180, RSFr.)
WR-Z
Wesley Leftwich (6'1, 205, Sr.)
Keyon Dilosa (6'3, 200, RSFr.) -- 3 targets, 3 catches, 25 yards (8.3)
Eric Laurent (6'2, 215, Jr.)
With Leftwich back, that bumps Dilosa to a backup role and sends Blair back to the X receiver position. Brown, Dilosa and Moore all saw more than 40 snaps, according to David Morrison's Snap Decisions post, while Hall and Blair saw 23 and 17, respectively. Ray Wingo, for what it's worth, saw three.
Last week, the X receivers (Moore and Hall) were targeted eight times, the H receivers seven, and the Z receivers five. It will be interesting to track the distribution from game to game (and, I guess, QB to QB).
TE
Sean Culkin (6'6, 245, Jr.) -- 3 targets, 3 catches, 29 yards (9.7)
Jason Reese (6'5, 250, So.) -- 2 targets, 1 catch, 5 yards (2.5)
Clayton Echard (6'5, 260, Sr.)
Something else interesting to track: Mizzou's per-play yardage was, according to Morrison, best in a 4-WR set; the Tigers averaged 6.8 yards per play to 6.5 in a 3-WR, 1-TE look. That's not a huge difference, but it's not quite what we expected. If that continues, it will be interesting to see if the snap counts shift.
LT
Connor McGovern (6'4, 305, Sr.) -- 29 career starts
Paul Adams (6'6, 290, RSFr.)
LG
Alec Abeln (6'3, 290, So.) -- 1 career start
Taylor Chappell (6'5, 305, Sr.) -- 10 career starts
C
Evan Boehm (6'3, 320, Sr.) -- 41 career starts -- QUESTIONABLE
Brad McNulty (6'4, 305, Sr.) -- 15 career starts
RG
Mitch Hall (6'5, 310, Sr.) -- 5 career starts
Kevin Pendleton (6'4, 315, RSFr.)
RT
Nate Crawford (6'5, 300, So.) -- 1 career start
Malik Cuellar (6'5, 300, Jr.)
No changes listed here, though we have to figure that, if Boehm can't go, Abeln will again move to center while Chappell and McNulty (mostly Chappell) man the LG position.
Defense
DE
Marcell Frazier (6'6, 265, Jr.) -- 1 QBH -- OR --
Walter Brady (6'3, 255, RSFr.) -- 1 QBH
DT
Josh Augusta (6'4, 345, Jr.) -- OR --
Terry Beckner Jr. (6'4, 300, Fr.) -- 2.0 tackles, 1 TFL
Josh Moore (6'5, 260, Fr.)
NG
Ricky Hatley (6'4, 285, Jr.) -- 1.5 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 QBH
A.J. Logan (6'2, 300, So.) -- 0.5 tackles
DE
Charles Harris (6'3, 255, So.) -- 3.0 tackles, 1.5 TFL, 1 FF
Nate Howard (6'4, 230, Fr.) -- 1.5 tackles, 1.5 TFL
Spencer Williams (6'3, 245, RSFr.)
For what it's worth, Frazier-Brady and Augusta-Beckner now each share the "OR" designation; that makes sense considering that, anecdotally, we heard Brady's and Beckner's names called more than the starters'. Regardless, that probably means that last week's snap splits (35 for Frazier and 22 for Brady, 37 for Augusta and 22 for Beckner) might be a little closer to even. And we have to wonder how many snaps Howard gets considering a) the game will probably be closer (with, in theory, fewer snaps for reserves), but b) he did a hell of a lot in his 18 snaps.
WLB
Kentrell Brothers (6'1, 235, Sr.) -- 12.0 tackles, 1.5 TFL, 1 blocked kick
Joey Burkett (6'2, 210, So.) -- 4.5 tackles
MLB
Michael Scherer (6'3, 230, Jr.) -- 2.0 tackles, 0.5 TFL
Brandon Lee (6'2, 220, RSFr.) -- 0.5 tackles, 1 PBU
SLB
Donavin Newsom (6'2, 230, Jr.) -- 4.0 tackles
Clarence Green (6'0, 220, Sr.) -- 4.0 tackles
Terez Hall (6'2, 215, Fr.) -- 1.0 tackles
Mizzou apparently only spent 10 plays in a nickel look as compared to 12 in a 3-4 (often just a 4-3 with a standup lineman) and 42 in a 4-3. Call it the Barry Odom effect; but while the nickel was mostly ineffective (5.9 yards per play), and the 3-4 was decent (4.1), the 4-3 dominated (2.0). Arkansas State is an interesting test because the Red Wolves have a ton of quick (and not particularly huge) receivers. How will Odom account for that?
CB
Kenya Dennis (5'11, 200, Sr.) -- 4.0 tackles, 1 TFL (1 sack), 1 PBU
John Gibson (6'0, 190, Jr.) -- 1.0 tackles
CB
Aarion Penton (5'10, 190, Jr.) -- 5.5 tackles, 1 TFL
Logan Cheadle (5'10, 180, So.)
Finis Stribling IV (5'11, 175, RSFr.)
Damn, these guys are good. And per Morrison, Cheadle (21) had almost as many snaps as Gibson (27).
SS
Anthony Sherrils (6'0, 190, So.) -- 2.5 tackles
Thomas Wilson (5'10, 190, So.) -- 1.0 tackles
Cam Hilton (6'0, 180, Fr.)
FS
Ian Simon (6'0, 195, Sr.) -- 3.5 tackles, 1 FR
Tavon Ross (6'0, 200, RSFr.) -- 1.5 tackles
These guys certainly passed their first tests as well. And Hilton even got three snaps.
Special Teams
K
Andrew Baggett (6'1, 215, Sr.) -- 4-4 PAT, 2-2 FG under 40
Still Baggett.
P
Corey Fatony (5'11, 185, Fr.) -- 6 punts, 45.8 avg, 2 inside 20; 7 kickoffs, 64.3 avg, 3 touchbacks
Dayton Balvanz (6'5, 200, Jr.)
Definitely still Fatony.
KR
Anthony Sherrils (6'0, 190, So.) -- 1 KR, 19 yards
John Gibson (6'0, 190, Jr.)
PR
Aarion Penton (5'10, 190, Jr.) -- 4 PR, 16.5 avg, 1 TD (sort of)
Thomas Wilson (5'10, 190, So.)
Still Sherrils and Penton.
