Freshman Dimetrios Mason's play a bright spot for slumping Missouri

Here are today's Mizzou Links.

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

If you're in full-fledged Year Zero mode, you might as well have a freshman receiver stepping up his game.

Offensive game ball – Dimetrios Mason

You have to look long and hard to find many silver linings to this season, but Mason’s emergence as a piece that could be a nice contributor for years to come is one positive. Against Kentucky, the freshman wide receiver caught four passes for a team-high 101 yards and two touchdowns. It was his second 100-yard game of the season, and he ranks second on the team in receptions (26) and receiving yards (350). ... He sort of reminds me of Florida’s Brandon Powell in that I think Missouri could do a lot of things with Mason – throw passes downfield to him, hit him with screens, use him on jet sweeps and end-arounds and even line him up in the backfield here and there. We have seen Mason take some snaps this season out of the backfield.

Offensively, Missouri freshman wide receiver Dimetrios Mason found the end zone twice — his first scores in a black and gold uniform.

"It felt good, but losing took a part of that away," Mason said. "We needed those touchdowns, but I was really hoping we were going to win."

Mason’s first touchdown came with 2 minutes, 22 seconds remaining in the first half as the Loganville, Ga., native snagged an over-the-shoulder grab from 27 yards out. His second came with 4 minutes, 22 seconds remaining in the game as sophomore quarterback Drew Lock found Mason for a 57-yard bomb.

After being used mostly close to the line of scrimmage early on, Mason is starting to find his groove downfield, too. As intriguing as youngsters like Emanuel Hall and Johnathon Johnson have been at times, Mason has been targeted 12 more times than Hall and 13 more times than Johnson, and despite 31 fewer targets than J'Mon Moore, he's only 182 yards behind him for the team lead.

By the way...

  • Junior and senior WRs: 100 targets, 49 catches, 762 yards (7.6), 8 TD
  • Freshman and sophomore WRs: 116 targets, 70 catches, 1,116 (9.6), 7 TD

Should be a hell of a passing game in 2018, I guess.
