Barry Odom and his Mizzou coaching staff certainly know bursts. The Tigers scored six commitments between July 23-27 and have now scored six more since December 3 (if you include Elijah Gardiner, anyway, who committed a while back but went public on Sunday). These 12 make up a majority of what is currently a 20-man 2017 recruiting class. It's possible a few more recent visitors pull the trigger soon as well.
Efficiency!
This run of commitments has now pushed Mizzou to 27th in Rivals.com's class rankings for 2017. That's a little bit artificially high -- of the 10 teams directly below the Tigers, only one (Oklahoma State) has as many as 20 commits, and teams like Wisconsin and Nebraska have 14-15 -- but ... well ... it's more fun to be talking about "artificially high" than "artificially low," isn't it?
(Meanwhile, in the 247Sports Composite -- typically the most accurate/useful of the team rankings -- Mizzou sidles up to the bar at 36th.)
So now the question becomes ... how many spots are left? Odom has said that he will sign a full class of 25 on Signing Day, and with some early enrollees among the committed, that number could ease as high as 27-28. That appears to be the plan, but this will mean as many as eight to 10 current Tigers won't be back in 2017. As things currently stand, there are 65 scholarship players scheduled to return next year (not to mention three walk-ons who started games in 2016), meaning for every additional commit Mizzou gets from here on out, someone will end up having to leave as well.
We'll see where on the roster this necessary attrition takes place.
